Ok, tried that with no luck. Is there anything else you could suggest?

[XFree86] DirectColor visual with XFree86 4.x

2003-03-18 Thread Isaac Wilson

I'm running Red Hat Linux 7.3 (kernel 2.4.18-3)
with XFree86 4.3.  My video adapter is a C&T 69030 and I'm using the
"chips" driver.  For some reason, all of my DirectColor visuals display in
some weird technicolor.  Blue displays as pink, green displays as light
blue, etc.  The only colors that are correct are black and white.
Furthermore, color allocation fails if I try to allocate more than 15 colors in
the colormap, which is completely absurd when running at a 16-bit color depth
and with minimal GUI's running (mwm plus two xterm windows).  I've even
tried going to 24-bits but I get the same problems.  8-bit PseudoColor and
16- and 24-bit TrueColor work fine.  I have to port legacy application
code which uses 8-bit PseudoColor to 16 and 24 bit color depths, and I need
DirectColor because of the graphics involved.

Any help would be
appreciated.

It would be very useful if XFree86 allowed running multiple instances of the
server on one machine, each with a different set of monitor/keyboard/mouse, thus
supporting more than one user at a time, without requiring a second computer or
a network.

There is a hack that does this for some VGA cards at
http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/multiuser/ - it works, but not for all VGA
cards, and it's not very stable (last time I tried, it was hanging the machine
on the server's shutdown, on VT change and on some mode changes).

[XFree86] Intel845 / SyncMaster 191T / RH8.0 / XFree86 / Configuration

2003-03-18 Thread xfree86
I've looked around through the archives but haven't found
an answer to my problem, so I hope someone here has an answer.

I'm installing RedHat 8.0 with Xfree 4.2.0-72 with an
Intel 845G video card and a Samsung SyncMaster 191T screen.

I'm unable to get a high resolution, high depth, high reliability
configuration and I'm rather frustrated.
Best I've gotten so far is an unreliable 640x480 with 16bit color

I know that the monitor can do [EMAIL PROTECTED] and @75Hz
I know the scan rates are 30-81H and 56-85V.

I've tried a variety of options in my XF86Config file.
I've tried (and horribly failed) with redhat-config-xfree86

Has anyone the right configuration information for an XF86Config
(and affiliates) for this configuration.

Thanks,
Gretchen

With all 3 set, I get colour flashes, things keep flickering
into transparency and psychedelic trails, but no lockup, so
I'm guessing it's the chipset TCL support.

With just RADEON_NO_CODEGEN and RADEON_NO_VTXFMT set, I get a
lockup. It seems to be related to rendering wide open views with
a lot of depth.

I'll try this next, I guess. The other thing might be to look at
the changes since 4.1.0, or maybe install 4.2.0 and see if it blows
up.

I do seem to recall problems with some AMD chipsets, but I don't know
anything specific.

I have nothing specific to suggest (does anyone else have good ideas?),
tracking down where exactly the problem lies would be the first step.

Re: [XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0 Multihead Problem

2003-03-18 Thread Mark Vojkovich
OK. I tested with both the generic int10 module from 4.2 and
from 4.3 on a 4.3 system. This was with two NVIDIA cards and the
nv driver on both heads.

  4.2 libint10.a works fine.
  4.3 linux/libint10.a works fine.
4.3 libint10.a does not post the card properly.

It appears as though there is definitely a regression in the
generic libint10.a module between versions 4.2 and 4.3.

Mark.

Bummer. Other things you could try:

  * set the environment variables RADEON_NO_CODEGEN,
RADEON_NO_VTXFMT and RADEON_TCL_FORCE_DISABLE in this order to
disable some driver features and see if that makes a difference
  * a snapshot from http://dri.sf.net

Is this the XFree86 that came with OpenBSD or did you install the
binaires provided by XFree86.org ?

If it's the former, please ask your question on the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
list instead. OpenBSD has done some customizations to the xdm setup,
and thus the discussion doesn't belong here.

If it's with binaires or sources directly from XFree86.org, can you
please explain better what you're seeing ? (A form of screen shot
would help if possible).

You misconfigured your mouse. Read the README file provided with
OpenBSD in /usr/X11R6/README. On an Ultra-10 you need this in the
InputDevice section for the mouse:

Option "Protocol" "SunMouse"
Option "Device" "/dev/tty00"
Option "Baudrate" "1200"

That log snippet is about the external output, are you trying to use
that? It might be a good idea to post the complete log file or at least
more snippets.

Option "CrtScreen" is obsolete, and you shouldn't override the VideoRam,
but those shouldn't cause problems.

Well, my hardware is running a AMD® 761 (569 BGA) northbridge chipset, and a

Reports on the web indicated that proper support for this rounded out in
the kernel at 2.4.18, to the point that things were stable. Tests with
enabling the right kernel pieces in 2.4.16 verified this, and it seemed
that Emporer Linux's 2.4.18 backed this up. It's probably feasible to
patch things up and/or build extra components for XFree86 to properly
support the card, but there wasn't enough support time to follow this
path out, especially since we had determined it wasn't a significant
issue.

If Emporer Linux has a path to get everything working with 2.4.16, by
all means, go for it.

Sometimes, when switching screen resolution, or from X to console, and
also from tty to tty (when using the framebuffer), the screen starts
flickering showing many strange horizontal lines. Switching a couple of
times from X to tty again solves (temporarely) the problem. This is _very_
annoying.
I thing that it's something related to the dotclock frequency, but I'm not
so sure. I tryed a lot of different video configurations
(resolution/frequency), but the problem is always there. Any ideas? Thank
you very much..

I tried adding:

  Option "PanelOff"
  Option "CloneDisplay" "2"
  Option "CloneVRefresh" "50.0 - 160.0"

but, other than acknowledging the options, behavior and logfile output didn't change.

Original message repeated below; any other suggestions?

=

The Red Hat beta folks suggested I ask about this here. "phoebe3" is the current
version of the beta.

Description of problem:
A fresh phoebe3 install works very well on my new used Dell Inspiron 8200 with
Radeon Mobility 9000, thanks to the new XFree86.

However, with the laptop closed and docked in the port replicator, I can't get
an external CRT to sync at anything other than 60Hz. This interacts badly with
the fluorescent lights around here.

I tried to change the Monitor section of the XF86Config file to reflect the
stats of the CRT, to no avail.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
4.2.99.901-20030213.0

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Fresh phoebe3 install, select Everything. LCD is 1600x1200.
2. Note external CRT displays at eyestrain-inducing 60Hz
3. Change Monitor section of XF86Config to reflect stats of external (Dell P991)
CRT rather than internal (Dell UltraSharp 15") LCD.
4. Rerun X or reboot

Actual results:
No change, still 60Hz

Expected results:
Should drive the external display at 75Hz or better.

Additional info:
Complete files appended below, but here's the relevant part of XF86Config:

  Section "Monitor"
  # Option "dpms"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName"Dell P991"
HorizSync30.0 - 95.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 160.0
  EndSection

And of the log:

  (II) RADEON(0): Clone modes validation
(II) RADEON(0): DDC detection (type 3) for clone modes
(WW) RADEON(0): Monitor0: Using default hsync range of 28.00-33.00kHz
(WW) RADEON(0): Monitor0: using default vrefresh range of 43.00-72.00Hz
(II) RADEON(0): Clock range: 20.00 to 350.00 MHz
  ...

(EE) RADEON(0): No valid mode found for CRTC2 clone
(II) RADEON(0): Total of -1 clone modes found

I also tried setting the "CloneVRefresh" and "DDCMode" driver options, but that
didn't change the results.

[XFree86] OpenBSD, Ultra10 XServer Error

2003-03-18 Thread Rooke, David Willaim (David)
Hi All,

OS: OpenBSD 3.2
Architecture: Sparc64 - Ultra 10
X Server: XFree86 4.2.1

My problem:
The X Server on my box is failing to recognize the mouse attached to my Sun keyboard.
I assume this is due to the "Sunism" of piggybacking the mouse off the back of the
keyboard. I've tried generating a new config file with XFree86 - configure but, not
surprisingly, that didn't work.
Any help you can provide will be much appreciated. Here's the log output from xdm when
it starts:

As it also happens on VT switching, the fundamental problem is probably
with stopping or starting the CP (Command Processor). I have no idea
what could be wrong with that code though, it seems to work fine almost
everywhere. Could be AGP chipset specific maybe.

I just had the same problem.

The problem is caused by your video setup. Try running on 16-bit color, then
a lower resolution, like 800x600.

[XFree86] VMware in XFree86 v4 - black screen

2003-03-18 Thread Mario Ohnewald
Hello!
I am accessing my KDE-Box via VNC, and i run VMware with a win2k server on
it.

As soon as i install VMware-tools to get a better resolution, the screen
gets black.

I can only booit win2k in the vga modues, andything else will end up in that
black screen, altought
the win2k server is not dead.

Do i know this problem, or do u know how to solve it?

Cheers, Mario

[XFree86] How to build kdrive fbserver with endianess conversion?

2003-03-18 Thread Jarno Manninen
Hi!

I'm trying to build Kdrive fbserver that should do byteswapping. Target
platform is modified Linux cyber2000fb framebuffer supporting IGA-1682 on
Sun Javastation. Problem is that there's no conversion from BE->LE on the
chip so this must be done in the software. How can I enable this at
compile time?

Btw. Nobody wouldn't know how-to enable memorymapped COP access on IGA-1682?

http://www.dpmms.cam.ac.uk/~werdna/xfree86-devel/xf86config.iiyama19TFT
is my config for exactly that hardware under Red hat 8.0.
1600x1200 works fine on the DVI port.

Re: [XFree86] RedHat 8 - SiS315 -XFree86 4.3.0 Problem

2003-03-18 Thread Thomas Winischhofer
I can't reproduce this on my card (same as yours but a little newer).

The main difference between the generic "vesa" driver and the dedicated
"sis" driver is that the vesa driver always uses 60Hz.

Try reducing the VRefresh range to 60Hz, perhaps yourr switch does not
like such high frequencies.

Description:

After upgrading to XFree86 4.3.0, my system gets all the way to a gray
scale gui with what looks like a terminal window in the lower right corner.
In the terminal window the following message loops:
Console log for localhost.localdomain
Console log for localhost.localdomain
Console log for localhost.localdomain etc, etc, etc.
Prior to the upgrade the system used the vesa generic drivers for the video
adapter to bring up the desktop.
I've tried it on two separate systems with the same results:
- both systems have the same type of video card (SIS315)
- one system AMD TBird 1800+ cpu the other AMD 1GHz cpu
- one system MSI KT333 Chipset other MSI KT266 Chipset
I've reinstalled Linux twice on the first system and once on the second.
Both systems worked with the generic drivers but once I upgraded the XFree86
from 4.2.0 to 4.3.0 I got the message above.
I'd like to get my SIS315 video cards to work with the right drivers
connected to my NEC MultiSync 5FGe through a KVM switch.
Any Ideas?

The fact that it does stop here seems to indicate that the module
loader is failing. Does Gentoo Linux has some kind of non executable
heap protection ?

In this case, there are a few

 #if defined(linux) && defined(__ia64__) || defined(__OpenBSD__)

in xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/loader/elfloader.c that need to be
changed into '#if defined(linux) || defined(__OpenBSD__)' or just
removed (the conditional, not the code that calls mprotect()).
