[XFree86] XFree version problem

2003-08-11 Thread Greg Knight
Hi Folks,

My apologies for the general nature of this query.

I have a program using X-Toolkit GUI running fine under the XFree that comes
with RedHat Linux 5. I have upgraded to RedHat Linux 8 (newer version of
XFree86), and the window painting no longer works correctly. Windows that
should be refreshed are not being, and other windows are left black, etc.

I am guessing this is a result of changes to the XFree86 code. I am sure
that I am not the first person to come across this, so I am hoping for some
info to help me resolve this.

Many thanks,

Greg

[XFree86] New GPL font available: Isabella 0.91

2003-08-11 Thread John Stracke
I've just put up a font I created based on a calligraphic hand from
1497: . I'm releasing it under
the GPL.

It's not so great at sizes below about 12 point (no hints yet), but it's
very pretty above that size. It has most of the characters up through
Unicode 512 or so, so it should work for a lot of Western and Eastern
European languages.

Re: [XFree86] little problem

2003-08-11 Thread rda
I had similar problem until I switched to the "nvidia" driver downloaded
from the Nvidia web site. (Drivers > Linux > IA32 [for Intel/AMD 32 bit]

Read the key parts of the 54 page README file -- but it is basically plug
and play since the ".run" file they provide handles most of the heavy
lifting.

remove the ALL the lines that say "VideoRam" and add
Screen 0
to the first device entry in your config file. You may also want to
remove the matrox hal module.

ok,  here's what I did.  it wouldn't let me "save link target as" to the actual place where they go, so i did it to another directory that I created.  Then i went to root and to the directory where the files were, and did: mv mga_drv.o /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers  and then mv XFree86 /usr/X11R6/bin    When it asked if I wanted to overwrite the others, i said yes.

then I rebooted and got nothing but error messages regarding X.  It tried to reconfigure, but couldn't.  After several tries, i was able to mv the old ones back in place and typed in startx.  But then it was like it didn't recognize my icons.  So, I restarted agian, and now everything works fine - with ONE monitor.

thanks for your help.  what should i do now???

Nope. I'm building straight from cvs with no mods, and there is no
ModulePath setting in my XF86Config file.

The builtin module path is /usr/X11R6/lib/modules, and no pcidata module
is installed there (libpcidata.a, judging by an older, working install).

There seems to be a problem with the build support for OpenBSD, and the
bug report was closed prematurely. The problem is still there in the cvs
head I pulled down about two hours ago.

[XFree86] Xvfb help

2003-08-11 Thread Leo Przybylski
Hello all,

I have created an XVirtualFrameBufferServer build as a regular user (not
root) and have it started up. Please keep in mind I do not have 'root'
access.

I am curious though how Xvfb works. I read that I need /dev/fb* devices
to talk to. Is this true? Is the Xvfb related to the Framebuffer of the
linux kernel?

I am having authorization rejections when connecting to my server. What
I did was I looked into the /dev/fb* device permissions. I found that I
do not have access to these devices, so I tried to create my own with
mknod. I get 'Operation not permitted' errors. I'm guessing I need to be
root to do this.

Is there anyone that can help me get the Xvfb working? I would like to
use it to run automated tests on some java programs I am running on
linux and require an X server.

Thanks for the info. The biggest difference between your XF86Config and
mine is that you are using the ati driver. I'd like to know what version
of X are your running. The Clone options I am using because, according
to the man page for the radeon driver, if I do not specify what modes,
hsync, and vrefresh for the secondary display in the Clone options, the
modes from the primary display will be used. And without them I checked
the log file and it did report that the modes from the primary were
being used for the secondary. Anyway, I am still completely clueless as
to why it is not working. Either hp has done something funky to the
card, the radeon driver is funky, or I am funky. I just wish I knew
what.

it does it but if i start X in 1024x768 it goes to sleep (only with the

It's a wierd problem, but i think it's more to do with the monitor than
the card, (mines an LG Studioworks 700s)

As for the log, as root try
chmod u+r e XFree86.0.log

Good luck
