[XFree86] tdfx dga problems

2003-09-05 Thread Dom
Hi all.

I've been trying for a while to get dga working with
my voodoo3 PCI card. I've got dri/mesa working
nicely, but i need dga for wine/starcraft. im running
this as root, so i have access to /dev/mem (i checked
too).

When attempting to run anything with dga (mplayer,
wine, or 'dga') the system appears to change
resolutions, but only displays a blank screen. i dont
get error messages from anything that uses dga except
for wine:

X Error of failed request: XF86DGADirectNotActivated
Major opcode of failed request: 137 (XFree86-DGA)
Minor opcode of failed request: 26
(XDGACreateColormap)
Serial number of failed request: 2708
Current serial number in output stream: 2710

my XF86Config snippet:

Section "Module"
Load "dri"
Load "drm"
Load "extmod"
Load "dbe"
Load "v4l"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "3dfx"
BoardName "Voodoo3 PCI"
Driver "tdfx"
EndSection

in Xfree86.0.log --

(II) Loading extension XFree86-DGA

is the only reference to dga

im running x86 debian woody w/X v4.1.0.1 kernel 2.2.20
[is this too old?]

I know there are some known issues with dga and tdfx
(im wondering if anyone could please tell me what they
are and any possible workarounds?)

Thanks
-Dom

You've removed all the other "Load" lines from your Module section and just
left the vnc.so there.

The 'Load "vnc"' line should be added to your EXISTING!! Module Section not
completely replaced.

That's your problem.

And as for the crashing, you've not read the release notes properly. The
.101 release requires you to put back the original video driver from
XFree86 4.3.0.

[XFree86] How to release XNextEvent ...

2003-09-05 Thread Damien Touraine
Hello,
I have a multithreaded application. I initialized X-Window with
XInitThreads. One thread is running the main program and another one is
waiting for X-events. However, some events, external to X-window ones,
may, for instance, close the application. Then, I wan't to clear all
threads, close X-window connection, etc ... Thus, I tried to use
XSendEvent from the main thread to release the XNextEvent that is
waiting the X events in the other thread. However, it seems that the
event does not release XNextEvent although it appears in the queue as
soon as a real event (i.e. comming from the mouse or the keyboard) occurs.

How can I release XNextEvent without asking the user to move the mouse
or press a key ?

Hi, ( sorry my english )

a little mistake

is in "device" section
option usebios "no"

The reason is that the driver is broken because S3/Via change the bios in
a incompatible way to the driver, the option usebios "no" fix it

[XFree86] Radeon 9200

2003-09-05 Thread The Smiths
Hi All who reside here,

I have just purchased a Radeon 9200 grahpics card and find that the
XFree86 4.3 I have installed does not in fact have that card listed in
the card database. I understand from some research I have done on the
XFree web sites though that it is in fact supported now! Yippee!

It is the RV280 engine, but will not configure via sax2 in my SuSE 8.2
setup. Just kicks out when it can't find the card. I haven't seen any
updates recently for SuSE binaries and could probably update things from
XFree86 latest stable release, if I knew how! :o)

In looking over all that, it didn't quite make sense to me in the way I
am familar with installing, building source files. So here come the
questions.

Anyone running this card in SuSE or others with 4.3 presently? Is 3D
supported from XFree or do you need to use the ATI drivers for that?

Are there new binaries for SuSE somewhere? If not, how do you compile
and install the newer stuff to use that card?

Thanks for your help
Patrick

Thanks Alberto,
I did download the driver, but I think these are for 3D capabilities,
aren't they? I first have to get my card recognized and setup for the
machine to run on, then I can install the drivers for 3D. Or am I
mistaking the whole reason for these drivers from ATI?

[XFree86] How to test the ATI Radeon 9200 driver

2003-09-05 Thread Olav Reinert
Hi there,

I'd like to test the ATI Radeon 9200 driver for XFree86. This chipset is not
supported by release 4.3.0, but support for it exists in the CVS source.

So I have tried to download some of the development snapshots of the CVS
source which contain 9200 support (i.e., the XFree86-4.3.99.8.tar.bz2 and
XFree86-4.3.99.9.tar.bz2 files) but none of them compile.

So what is the best (=easiest) way for me to get or build a version of XFree86
4.3.0 that supports my Radeon 9200 chip?

Thanks,

After install Mdk 9.1 or Suse 8.2 , XFree freeze. I change the drivers in

good. But not in radeon , vesa and ati.

Actually X servere works. If you attach extarnal monitor, and press +
you can switch to it. And by repeting the + -- go back to the LCD
screen.
It's some strange problem with video outout initialization.

I presume it's still crashing though ?

If so, try removing your 'option "swcursor"' and let me know if that fixes
it.

I managed to get the 9200 working with the ATI binaries, but as Olav
pointed out, it would be nice to have the XFree86 drivers working.
Where did you get the files to compile? I did not see the XFre86-4.3.99
files you mentioned above and is that all you need to update things?

Alberto,

Downloaded the ATI binary file 3.4.5 version and it works pretty well.
Haven't gotten the 3D working yet, but working on that presently.
Should have all running shortly I am hoping and everything happy with
the new 9200 card. Can't comment on the older drivers as i did not use
those prior to this.

Am looking forward to having XFree86 running with it too, which I am
hoping to see either by me building it or in the next version of SuSE.

Hi Patrick,
Unfortunately, Radeon 9200 support is not included in the base XFree86 4.3.0
distribution. Adding it on is a job for various distributors - Debian and Red
Hat add it on, but apparently SuSE haven't.

I think your best bet would be to contact your distributor directly and ask them
to include Hui Yu's Radeon patchset; if they don't know where to get it, point
them at me.

Cheers!

Dave,

I just purchased this card today and am finding it a challenge
as well, but thru perseverance, it came alive tonite. Man, is it sweet
too, I'm liking it a lot, but I still have some bugs to work out.

I went with the new ATI drivers, because even if you get it working with
just XFree86, you still have to create the kernel module for 3D work.
That was the part that threw me in the beginning and as it turned out, I
had a buggy gcc installed. Replaced that with a known working build and
off everything went.

If you just want 2D for the moment, then build the latest XFree86 as I
am pretty sure it works well for that. XFree developers, correct me if
I am mistaken. If you want the 3D though as well, then that is only
available from ATI for now, I believe.

There is no 'fixed' font in the XF86Config file. Either
his font server (xfs) isn't running or the font directories included
in the font server configuration (typically at /etc/X11/fs/config)
don't have any directories with a font alias for 'fixed' in them.
A font alias for 'fixed' is required for the server to start.

Naresh, you will get over 100,000 hits if you put that error
message into google.

You are using the wrong driver. Change Driver "vga" to Driver "i810"

[XFree86] Need help with ATI Radeon 9200

2003-09-05 Thread David Loszewski
I just bought a ATI Radeon 9200, XFree86.org says that XFree86 4.3.0
will handle any radeon card however I can't get mine to work correctly
under FreeBSD 4.8 or 5.1. The only driver I could get it to work with
is the "vesa" driver, and as you can image it looks like crap. Could
someone provide me with some inside on this problem? I'd really rather
prefer not returning this card. ATI has a driver for this card on their
list for Linux but nothing for FreeBSD. Someone out there must have
gotten this working by now. Any help you can provide would be much
appreciated.

thx,
Dave
