Yes, add the line

VideoRam 16384

to the "Device" section of this card in your XF86Config file.

[XFree86] trident driver won't work with TGUI 9680

2003-09-21 Thread Sanyi Benczik

I just installed RedHat 7.3 (with XFree
4.2.0-8) on an older machine.  As I expected, XFree86 does not start with
my Trident TGUI 9680 driver: the monitor clicks and the screen goes blank.
I've had this problem before, it seems to be a
bug in earlier versions of the driver and last time I fixed it by
downloading the latest driver from Alan Hourihane's page.

Well, it sure ain't working this time:
* If I install the driver (trident_drv.o)
only, I get an "ABI minor version (7) is newer than the server's version"
error.
* If I install the XFree86 binary too, I get a
"Caught signal 11. Server aborting" error

Is this a bug? Am I just stupid? Any fix
appreciated!
Lemme know if need further info.

[XFree86] How to determine X version

2003-09-21 Thread Pradeep Singh
Hi All,

I have installed RedHat 7.3 on a PC with the following display card:

Intel 82845/G GL

When I start the computer I can use the GUI mode but if I logout, my screen
is dark. Nothing to do.
I press ctl+alt+F2 to get the command line. After that I cannot start GUI by
pressing ctl+alt+F7 OR typing startx. The only option is to reboot the
system.
I tried Xconfigurator and changed the VGA driver with no luck.
Only with VESA card I can use the X
I think my X is giving problem. I am thinking to install latest X. How can
know the version of the currently installed X?
Please help

Sorry if I sounded overly harsh!

Well, GUIs can be good for certain tasks, but the current trend
of using them for everything is a very bad one, in my view! They
are so much slower than just typing for a lot of things ... and
you have to think all the time about what you're doing with the
mouse, rather than the actual task in hand ... Good for
painting pictures or playing games ... bad for reading and
writing email though :)

Obviously, I like features like visible threading and so on -
but the most important thing to me is rapid navigation and
commands - using the keyboard. I have yet to see a browser-based
system that allows that to happen.

Anyway, FWIW, I think the xfree86 list is fine for the purpose
at the moment. (Coupled with the wiki of course).

[XFree86] AGP 1x ?

2003-09-21 Thread Greg Stark

I have a matrox G400 and just moved it to a brand new P4P800 motherboard. I
know the G400 supports at least AGP 4x and the motherboard supports up to 8x.
So I'm wondering why I still see this in my XFree86 logs:

Do I have to do something special to make use of the higher speeds?

[XFree86] XFree86.0.log made at first boot crash

2003-09-21 Thread Henk
Dear people,

Hopefully you can give me a response on this. The crash is at my first
install during first boot. The boot floppy made during install can't find
the linux RedHat 8 installation, so I can't make any changes to drivers or
whatever. I also have the Knoppix 3.2 cd, but it's not possible with
knoppix to make changes to the XF86Config file. Below I copied the
XFree86.0.log, I hope you can give me advice on this.

Sincerely, Henk.

or whatever your partitions is, the knoppix defaults to mounting read
only, see /etc/fstab for the mount options it uses.

>XFree86.0.log, I hope you can give me advice on this.

you don't want x to startup at boot if you are working on x, edit the
/etc/inittab file so the line that looks like this, has a 3 (not 5) in
it. (mine is a different distro so might be slightly different)

id:3:initdefault:

also you should be able to specify runlevel 3 (no x) at the bootup, if I
recall grub: edit the boot options (e), select the line that specifies a
kernel, edit (e), add a "3" at the end, end edit (esc), then boot (b).

[XFree86] Re: How to determine X version

Red Hat 7.3 most probably has version 4.2.0

To be sure check the first lines in /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Also, in Red Hat you can always query the version of installed packages with
rpm -qa | grep XFree86

[XFree86] problems running XFree86

2003-09-21 Thread anon

I installed XFree86 with Debian 3.0 r1, so it's
configured to start up automatically and I have no idea how to disable this in
order to avoid being told, each time I start Linux, that XFree86 has failed to
run. I downloaded and installed the then-latest version of XFree86 a couple of
months ago; it's 4.3.0, released on February 27, 2003, but this did not fix the
problem. The XFree86 log file says something about the primary display device
having a PCI bus ID of 1:0:0, but it also says something about another device at
location 1:0:1 that has no drivers, or something; I don't remember exactly what
it says, but I'll attach a copy of the file anyway. Oddly enough, under Windows
(I'm running a dual-boot system here) the Device Manager in the System control
panel has two display adapters listed, although I only have one graphics card
installed, a Radeon 9000 Pro with 64 MB VRAM from Gigabyte Technology. One is
labeled R9000 and the other, Radeon 9000 / Radeon 9000 PRO. At some point I
disabled the latter with the device manager, causing no problems whatsoever:
everything seemed to work properly, and in spite of this, Linux has a problem
with some device at location 1:0:1, the address of the adapter labeled Radeon
9000 / Radeon 9000 PRO in Windows (the one labeled R9000 has location
1:0:0).

I have no idea if it's useful information, but I'll
list the so-called resource settings of each "adapter" as given by the Device
Manager:

R9000:
Memory Ranges F800 - FBFF, E780 -
E780,
000A - 000B
I/O Ranges D800 - D8FF, 03B0 - 03BB, 03C0 -
03DF
IRQ 16

Radeon 9000 / Radeon 9000 PRO:
Memory Ranges F400 - F7FF, E7FF -
E7FF
no I/O Ranges or IRQ listed

If you could offer any insight as to what the
problem is I would be most appreciative.
-Thomas

It's listed at the top of the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.
I believe the Intel 845G requires XFree86 4.3.

This card (GeForce4 MX) works with the "nv" driver that comes
with XFree86 4.3. I can't say for sure if it's possible to get it
to work any other way. It *might* work with the "nv" driver that
comes with XFree86 4.2 (your version) if you have one of the older
GeForce4 MX cards. But, at a minimum you're going to need to
modify the XF86Config file. Note, that root can start the server
with an alternate XF86Config file from the command line. eg.:
  startx -- -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new

[XFree86] Bad Mistake

2003-09-21 Thread jared simmons
Aloha again,
With some welcome help from several folks in this group I was successful
in getting my new Linux box (with Asus P4P800 board and Nvidia
GEFORCE-FX video card) up and working perfectly. The startx command
brought up the GNOME desktop and all was well - Then I made a very bad
decision - I downloaded 'Yahoo Messenger' for RH8 from the Yahoo site,
while in my root account in RH9! Yes I know this was really dumb. The
next day and evry day since, every time I type in 'startx' while in
'root' I get no gui but rather a notice -- "waiting for X server to shut
down". Also get instructions to look at /var/log/X11/XF86Config and
/etc/X11/XF86Config. I can find no errors listed and everything looks
normal. The GOOD news is that when I set up a new user account for
myself everything works great. (I have Not downloaded 'ymessenger'
again.) I did remove all references to 'ymessenger' in root - ls and
others in /usr. But still I can not get the gui to come up with startx
from root and continue to get the "waiting for... etc. page. Anyone know
how I can get my root account back to normal? I am willing to suffer a
few 'slings and arrows' for my poor decision making in the process of
getting some help. Thanks - jared

Ang: [XFree86] Mouse Problems, II

2003-09-21 Thread Svein Erik Kro
Hi!

Take away Option "CorePointer" from the mouse0input
sectction.
And change this lineScreen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 to Screen "Screen0"
0 0

Is it a scrollmouse?
If yes:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

If no:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Buttons" "3" # number of buttons
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "false" # If only 2 buttons true,
if 3 buttons false
EndSection

You could also try the savage module for XFree instead of the vesa
module.

Change Driver "savage" in the device section for Card0.

also run 'lspci' and see what the pciid is for you card.

I hope this can help!

Svein Erik

>>> Richard F Freund <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 18/09 7:42  >>>
XFree Folks,

I am currenlyt having some X-based mouse problems. Svein Erik Kro
had a couple preliminary suggestions, but reminded me that I should
send the relevant files (which are now attached).

To recap:

a. I have been using 4.3 with Debian Woody for months now without
any problems.

b. A few days ago, I started to have two problems:
 - my color depth was only 8 bits, so I added an Option to the
config file to specify 16 as default and this solved that problem
 - mouse problems. Depending on various settings in the InputDevice
section, my mouse either does not respond or is super-accelerated. In
either case, it is unusable.

The settings I have in the attached config file cause the
superaccelerated
mouse (also constantly opening/closing menus/panels).

Besides the two attached files, you need to know that I have a soft
link
/dev/mouse -> dev/psaux

One other thing, xset q reports 'unable to open display'.

Your comments greatly appreciated.

Thx,

Richard
