embedded (GPL)Xfree86

2003-09-26 Thread jassi brar
Dear all,
I m working on porting the X11 onto an embedded environment.
The regular XFree86 is obviously MUCH MORE than needed. I need
some trimmed version of XFree86 for embedded linux(mizi), that
too under GPL(i can't buy any comercial s/w).
Cud you plz suggest me some suggestion or link where i can find
the same. I have extensively google'd without much luck :-(
Thanx in advance,
jassi

It wouldn't let me classify into multiple libraries...so I just associated
 it with other.

I don't see how building against an external Xrender/etc works,
since those libraries depend on libX11; to avoid a dependency
loop, we copy the libraries into the X11 tarball and do various
munging.

Fixing that isn't really possible without splitting up of main
tarball.

(Better external fontconfig support would be appreciated, however)

Why do you think so? If you just take the core server, the drivers you
need, and the fonts you need, you get a very compact solution.

If all you need is the SERVER, you can throw out all the utilities and
most of the libraries.

I'm surprised by that statement, because there are a number of excellent
choices for this, and there are several websites that have surveys of the
available choices. Besides the TinyX/kdrive option that was already
mentioned, you should also look at nanoX, which is part of Microwindows.

Just to be clear, XFree86 is NOT under the GPL - it's under a very
different open source license originally derived from the MIT/X
Consortium license, and closer to the BSD license than to GPL.

2003-09-26 Thread Alon Weinstein
Well, MonitorLayout didn't change anything. I think the problem is due
to the agpgart.o module not loading. Apperently there's a problem with
KT400/600 AGP and agpgart.o -- the mainboard uses AGP 3.0, and agpgart.o
doesn't support it in this version.

Does anyone know in which kernel version agpgart.o supports KT400 AGP
correctly?

Sure, it was really pretty easy to get working but feel free to let us
know of any questions you have.

I seem now to have a stable XFree86 config file (no EE in the log) but I
obviously have to get my mind round the scripts you also kindly sent -
which at the moment are not properly understood by me - as I still have
no dual screen. I have a good idea of what is going on in the config
file but the scripts and what/how is still a mystery. I guess that it
will be possible to insert the right syntax in a file somewhere so that
it is all automatic when I boot up (equivalent to an .ini file). More
 reading

Basically the user's .xsession is run when the user starts the X server.
My .xsession starts a couple apps and backgrounds them (so that they are
always started up each time I start XFree86). It also runs the script
that starts a window manager on the second head, and then starts a
window manager on the first head. Note that the window manager is not
backgrounded, since if the .xsession script exits, then the X server
will quit as well.

Also Anyone know where I can learn about the XF86config options etc.
 syntax?

man XF86Config should work on most distros.. however, it may not cover
all of the available options. My best bet has been search mailing lists
for people with similar configurations and go from there :)

Good luck,

[XFree86] Compiling and Installing XFREE cvs version

2003-09-26 Thread Ariel Fritz
Hi all

I've downloaded the last cvs version of XFREE. And I'd like to replace my old
version. But I've never compiled any Xfree before.
I have a trident video card with VT1621 chipset, and my current Xfree version
4.3.0-15 doesn't support TV out for this chip. That's why I want to update
my Xfree.
I've read some documentation about how to do that, but I didnt't understand at
all.

Somebody can explain to me in a few lines how can I do it?
Any suggestion to my video card can work with TVout fine?

Thanks a lot and regards

Your log looks fine. Direct rendering seems to be enabled. Whether or
not DRI gets enabled shouldn't have anything to do with MergedFB.

try removing:
Option AGPMode 4
and:
Viewport 0 0

from your config.

What patch did you use? also, what version of xfree86 did you patch?
were their any rejects?

Also did you ever get non-mergedfb dualhead working with stock 4.3 or
CVS? If that works then mergedfb should work.

The behavior you are seeing when you switch modes (ctrl-alt-+) is

(1024x768-1024x768) and a clone mode (1024x768). in the clone mode
the

 you can try adding:

 Option MonitorLayout CRT, CRT
if you are using two CRT monitors. if you are using a DVI flatpanel
 and a CRT then try:

 Option MonitorLayout TDMS, CRT

you can also try changing CRT2Position from LeftOf to RightOf
it shouldn't make a difference, but it's worth a shot.

[XFree86] Problems with ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500

2003-09-26 Thread Brian J. McGovern
I've been fighting with this for a day or two now, and I've run out of leads
to fix it. Help pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated.

I have an IBM T40 running FreeBSD 5.1 (stock) with a ports collection from
9/24, as there were apparently some changes to the XFree86 port between 5.1 and
that date (and I wanted to make sure I had the latest patches).

Using X -configure and xf86config generate similar, yet distinctly different
config files. Both have the same problem, however, in that when I start X,
I get either signal 6s, or signal 11s, and it crashes, whether I use XFree86
directly, or run xdm.

I've gone through the log, and made changes to load the modules to get rid
of the missing symbols from the generated config file. At this point, the
only thing that looks odd is the reported screen resolution of 65536x65535,
but can't find a way to over ride it.

I've included my dmesg output from the laptop, so that the hardware I'm
running can be seen. I've also included my XF86Config file, and the log from
a typical run.

Again, a working config or pointers on what to try next would be greatly
appreciated.

No patch, took the binaries.

Also did you ever get non-mergedfb dualhead working with stock 4.3 or

I'm using 4.3 from RH9.
Do you think compiling from CVS should work better? If yes -- should I

Moving on... I install kernel 2.6-test5, which is supposed to have
better via-agp support.
Now when I start X the second monitor simply stays black. However --
it's power-led is lit, which means some information is moving from the
computer to the monitor (in console mode the second monitor's power-led

is off, as in stand-by mode).

Attached is my current XFree86 log. I manually made sure that the

I think this happens if you use kdm/xdm with a xfree server compiled
from cvs dri (as it lacks xauth). You should be able to disable xauth
with xdm (iirc with kdm too), but I really can't remember how - I'll
just use console login instead...

On BSD, I have run mkfondir. In XFree86.0.log, there are no (WW) and (EE).
Before installing and run Redhat (7.3), Mandrake 8.2 was OK.
Is ther annincompatibility with Redhat and others Unix/Linux distributions?
I like all distributions, but I like more Mandrake for good

[XFree86] Red Hat 9 - Flatron, Mouse Troubleshooting

2003-09-26 Thread val_santiago

  Hello,

I have had problems using Red Hat 9 with a LG Flatron monitor. After
installing RH9, the following message is shown:

  Impossible to execute X server.

I can use the graphical interface but with low resolution (800 x 600).
Besides that, my Genius Netscroll+ mouse also presents a problem because I
can not see the arrow. Here is the configuration:

Distribution: Red Hat 9 - Workstation installation
  Monitor: LG Flatron 795FT Plus
  Motherboard: ASUS A7N266-VM
Processor: Athlon 1700+ (1.4 GHz configured)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce2 Integrated GPU, 8 MB (recognized as
GeForce2 MX generic by RH9)
  Mouse: Genius Netscroll+, 2 buttons, 1 roller.

I send the XFree86.0.log attached. The sound board works fine.

   Thank you,

   Val.

(II) NV(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz

According to information I see on the web your Monitor section
in the XF86Config should have

HorizSync 30 - 96
VertRefresh 50 - 160

I don't know about the missing cursor. I've heard one other

[XFree86] Strange problems with some truetype fonts

2003-09-26 Thread Bjrn Persson
Hi everybody!

I use Xfree 4.3.0 and XFS on a Redhat box. The font path in
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 is simply unix/:7100.

I'm having problems with a set of truetype font files. I've got other
truetype fonts that work just fine, but these files cause all sorts of
trouble. They apparently work in Windows though. They also seem to almost
work in Openoffice but not in Mozilla or Konqueror. Could this be because of
a difference between the old and new font systems?

I used TTMKFdir. to get a fonts.dir file. MKfontscale doesn't work. It says
mkfontscale: relocation error: mkfontscale: undefined symbol:
FT_Get_PS_Font_Info. Is it likely that MKfontscale would produce a better
fonts.dir file if I could get it to work? Also, how can I check whether the
font files are broken? I've heard that Apple and Microsoft have truetype font
validators, but I don't have a mac, and the one from Microsoft only works on
Windows 2000 and XP while all I have is 95 B.

Here are the details:

These fonts are used by the online version of a Swedish encyclopedia, NE.
Instead of using Unicode they use special fonts to create their own ad-hoc
character sets for foreign characters. They also have math fonts where every
glyph is an entire equation. The fonts are distributed as an installation
program for Windows at http://ne.se/jsp/download/fonts/NEFonter.exe. (They
have installers for macs too.) If anyone wants the extracted TTF files, ask
me and I'll send them.

These are the file names:

Mathf1.ttf Mathf2.ttf Mathf3.ttf Mathf4.ttf Mathf5.ttf Mathf6.ttf Mathf7.ttf
Mathf___.ttf neastro.ttf nebraill.ttf nedkoMK.ttf nedkoRHF.ttf Nedko.ttf

neHand.ttf NEmath1.ttf NEmath.ttf neMorse.ttf nemusik.ttf nespec.ttf
Nesymbol.ttf NEtxtHFK.ttf NEtxtMK.ttf NEtxtRHF.ttf NEtxtRM.ttf NEyz1.ttf

The files nefonet.ttf and Nesymbol.ttf aren't mentioned at all, and I suspect
having no other encodings than ASCII for all but one of them is wrong. All
that I have looked in have characters even in the 128 to 255 range. I got
some of them to work a little better in Mozilla (but not Konqueror) by
changing ascii-0 to iso8859-1. In Openoffice, on the other hand, I can
choose from all the fonts even NEfonet and NEsymbol. The only problem in
Openoffice seems to be that the bold and italic versions appear as separate
fonts, so that I can make the text bold or italic by selecting another font
but not in the normal way.

The NEtext font is the only one that is supposed to have the normal
characters in their correct positions, but when I look at it with XFD it
seems to have the characters in the 128 to 255 range in a totally random
order. It makes non-English characters all wrong in

[XFree86] Fatal Server Error

2003-09-26 Thread L Lin-Cosmotech Distribution

I am getting a fatal server error while booting
into Linux redhat 7.3.

It gives me a Fatal server error:
xf86MapPciMem: could not mmap PCI memory
[base=0xe000,hostbase=0xe000,size=0] (invalid argument)

I think there is also a problem reading my video
display drivers, my laptop is a ibm x22.

Please helpm me resolve this.

[XFree86] Belkin KVM switch and Gnome, console mouse service

2003-09-26 Thread jmw
right now, i'm using:

kernel 2.4.20-20.9
gpm-1.19.3-27
redhat-config-mouse-1.0.5-1
gnome-desktop-2.2.0.1-4
gnome-terminal-2.2.1-3
Belkin KVM F1DS104T
Microsoft PS2 mouse

there are two problems:

1. if i do nothing special on log-in, mouse cursor response is slower than i expect.
this is true even though i have acceleration and sensitivity sliders (Preferences --
Mouse)
all the way over to the right. i must restart GPM if i want faster cursor response.

2. if i use the KVM to switch from Linux to either of two other machines, then switch
back to Linux, every movement of the mouse causes the cursor to jump randomly
around the screen, mostly from a lower left to upper right direction. i can only
regain
control over the cursor if i restart GPM service.

i contacted Belkin about the KVM. their reply was try restarting GPM. that wasn't
terribly helpful.

someone here had earlier suggested this is related to a mouse problem on earlier
kernel versions, but the description of that does not appear to be the same.

is there some other work-around for this? can anyone say whether this is a Gnome
problem, GPM problem, or some other?

Switching VTs and back should help. XFree86's mouse protocol parsing
just doesn't seem to be smart enough to deal with this sort of thing.

i suppose time and development will tell.
could you be a bit more explicit about 'switching VTs'?

[XFree86] Mandrake 9.1 X-server Won't Display

2003-09-26 Thread Ray D Pratt
Dear XFree86 Friends:

I'm new to Linux, and I just installed Mandrake Linux 9.1 on my old
Gateway G-366 Celeron with 96 megs of RAM and a 20-gigabyte hardrive and
a SIS 6326 video card. The install screen was clear and beautiful, but
after the re-boot I got a message saying that X-Server won't run. After
several hours of reading an old Linux book and going through manuals in
text mode, I was finally figured out how to copy the XFree86.0.log file
to a DOS floppy so that I could send it to you as instructed in the
manual pages.

The log file is included below, and I hope very much that you can help me
get X-Server running.

Very Respectfully,
Ray Donald Pratt

Re: [XFree86] Mandrake 9.1 X-server Won't Display

2003-09-26 Thread Mark Vojkovich
There's a bug in the 4.3.0 NV driver in the Riva128 support.
Putting:

Option NoDDC

in the Section Device for the Riva128 should clear that up.
