I agree 100% with you of course, however DDC probe is not always
available for one reason or another. If DDC probe is not
available, having an end user manually key in their display's
horiz/vert ranges and other settings is not a really good
solution though.

The best solution is to use DDC probed EDID data, and in lieu of
that, fall back to a list of predefined known monitors which come
from a monitor database of as many monitors as possible, in order
to maximize compatibility and user friendliness. That can only
really done either with a monolithic database as is common now in
various OSS OS distributions, or via distributed per-product and
per-vendor metadata files such as Windows .INF files or a similar
solution.

So, it's definitely prefered to use EDID, but unfortunately
KVM's, some video drivers, and other situations require a monitor
database to exist, either monolithically or distributed.

I'm collecting monitor .INF files in order to try to unify this
for all distributions in the future. People can attach .INF
files or links to them to the video-hwdata project feature/bug
tracker on sourceforge and I'll be putting them together over the
next several months hopefully.

Take care,
TTYL

Make sure you are loading 'agpgart' with the command

modprobe agpgart

before starting X.

[XFree86] r128 xfree driver doesn\\\'t work with ati mobility m3 agp 2x

2003-11-10 Thread news
hi xfree ;)

I\\\'m currently here on my \\\"monday job\\\" at siemens to get some money beside my
study. My currently project is to get an ATI Mobility M3 AGP 2x (Rage 128 Chipset, 16
MB RAM, Onboard) running on Simateic Rack PC. The problem is that XFree don\\\'t find
any Modes for the Screen (LCD). I have tried the latest dirvers from
http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/drivers/x86/, but nothing changed. I hope someone can
help.

thx

The r128 driver, when connected to an LCD, ignores all the numbers in
the modeline except for the x and y resolutions - it even ignores the
clock speed: It looks up the rest of the numbers from the vbios, using
the x and y resolutions to find a matching mode. This doesn't prevent
you from using other resolutions, but some of the lower resolutions
have
stupidly high refresh rates (aiui this doesn't matter because the
chipset
compensates for this), so if you adjust the HorizSync and VertRefresh
values to have a _very_ wide range, you may be able to get at those
modes.

I discussed this with the list a while back and a patch was put into
CVS, if said patch has propagated into your installation, then the
Xfree86 log should show why a mode is rejected (eg "not listed in bios"
and so on).

I have an A20p (Rage Mobility M3), if your horizsync and vertrefresh
entries are lenient enough, I would expect something like this modeline
to work for you:

ModeLine "1280x1024" 108.00 1280 1328 1342 1568 1024 1025 1028 1040

[ as I said, most of the numbers will be ignored, but these are the
values I actually pulled out of the VBIOS. ]

It should already work. Various users and developers use this class of
ATI hardware on PPC without troubles. What problems are you having?

[XFree86] Voodoo3 2000/XFree-4.3.0 - DRI problem

2003-11-10 Thread Stefan Birkholz
Greetings,

I recently configured [gkx]dm logins, but noticed that
after I logged out of the first session my other VTs would
become unusable (showing a static [gkx]dm login screen but
no console). Furthermore [gkx]dm seemed to having switched
VTs (from VT7 -> VT8). I could log into a session and later
log out again (again switch VTs VT8 -> VT7, race condition?).

This problem occured only when I started [xkg]dm, but not when
I used startx from the console. In both cases DRI was enabled.

With DRI disabled, [kgx]dm work perfectly for me (no graphics
errors upon logging out). I tested my configuration using an
older Version of XFree86 (4.1.0) where everything worked perfectly
as well, even with DRI enabled. In both cases I had compiled XFree86
by myself, but console switching (after logging out of first session)
also didn't work when I tested with a precompiled XFree-4.3.0 version
(from SuSE-8.2). I didn't much test Xfree-4.2.x, though.

Then I downloaded the linux-drm-4.3.0-kernelsource package from
the XFree86-Homepage and compiled it on my system (Kernel 2.4.21,
GCC-2.95.2); but whereas the tdfx.o kernel module seems to work
ok, the tdfx_drv.so prevents X from starting altogether:
(from my XFree86.0.log)

(EE) LoadModule: Module tdfx does not have a tdfxModuleData data object.
(EE) Failed to load module "tdfx" (invalid module, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

This only happens with the tdfx_drv.so from the linux-drm package, though.
So while I now have a configuration that allows me to use [gkx]dm (by
disabling DRI), I would like to know if this error can be fixed in the
upcoming XFree86-4.4.0 release (considering that [gkx]dm+DRI seemed to
work in at least XFree-4.1.0).

Greetings
 Stefan Birkholz

[XFree86] X server startup removes shared memory partitions

2003-11-10 Thread Richard L. Kitchen
I am running version 4.3.0 of XFree86 and I have a problem with
the Xserver removing shared memory partitions that belong to other
processes when it starts.

Apparently when I originally wrote my code which uses shared
memory I unwisely choose to use shared memory keys in the
range 1 - 200.

I notice that the Xserver seems to create shm partitions with
key values of 0 and 2 and most likely other values that I haven't
yet gleaned.

If I change the key value to some rather large number my problem
goes away, i.e. my partition is not marked for deletion by the
server.

My question is: what ranges of shared memory key values are
being used by the Xserver and friends ? I would like to change
my code to avoid the problem now and in the future.

[XFree86] ati radeon mobility 9600 / powerbook 15" problem

2003-11-10 Thread joshua stein
i'm having problems running X on a 15" powerbook that has an ati
radeon mobility 9600 (m10) agp chip.

the x server starts up without any fatal errors and draws stuff on
the screen, but it's all skewed and unreadable. the mouse cursor
moves around and seems to be drawn just fine, just nothing else.

i took some pictures to better explain what i'm seeing:

http://jcs.org/media/miscellaneous/computers/powerbook/

i've played around with different driver options to no avail;
nothing seems to make it draw the screen properly or even any
differently. it seems to be the same pattern of mess every time i
start x.

xfree86 log and configuration follow below. any input would be
appreciated.

Re: [XFree86] X server startup removes shared memory partitions

2003-11-10 Thread Mark Vojkovich
The Xserver doesn't pick the keys. The OS does, ie. it allocates
them with IPC_PRIVATE. You are trying to allocate segments that
have already been allocated by other processes such as the Xserver.
Are you calling shmget with IPC_CREAT and checking your return values?
If you're not having the OS allocate them for you by passing
IPC_PRIVATE as the key, you'll need to be checking return values.

Mark.

This is problem that should be solved in the latest CVS source. You can
download and compile that. A quick workaround is to simply disable
direct-render by e.g. just not loading the i830 kernel module. There was
an extensive thread on this a month or two ago - check the archives for
details.

[XFree86] Radeon 9200/DVI with latest XFree86

2003-11-10 Thread Roger Sunshine
I recently bought a Radeon 9800 SE based card made by PowerColor (model
r92le-c3s, box makred with a "SE" sticker) and a Viewsonic VX2000 LCD
monitor and I can't get the DVI port to work well. I'm running RedHat 9
and with the X driver included with it and the chip id overridden to
just about any known radeon card, I get no picture at all on the DVI
port (though the X logs indicate that it found the monitor). Searching
the mailing list archives on various places indicated that the 9200 card
is not quite compatible with other radeons, so I pulled down the current
XFree86 tree (as of midday 11/9) and built X from scratch. Running the
resulting X server produces a image on the DVI port if I have only the
DVI port connected, but either the image quality is horrible (closest
approximation would be a tv screen with lots of "snow") or the picture
does not appear at all. Oddly enough, if I plug the analog port in, the
analog picture is fine (sans some visible ringing in the signal). The
monitor and card work fine in Windows XP, so I know that both parts are
properly connected and configured.

Attached are the XFree86.0.log file and my XF86Config file.

Thanks for any information.
