[XFree86] startx questions

2004-01-27 Thread hksdu
Hi everyone:

I have a problem when I use startx to bring up kdm. I login as root, if
I fire up startx, it loads something, and then shut down x server. If I
just fire up kdm, it works fine. I tried to create two files: .xinitrc
and .Xsession. I exec kdm in .xinitrc in my root home dir. It doesn't
do the job either. I man startx and I found that the way that I am
doing is the correct way but I don't know where the problem is, any clue?

I am having a similar problem and would appreciate
an answer as well.  In my case, I have OpenBSD 3.4 with XFree86 4.3.0 on a
CompaqArmada 4160T laptop.  My screen is not blank, but it seems to hang
completely just before loading a window manager.  The whole system freezes
- I can't switch to a text console. The video is also as 1MB RAM card, in this
case Cirrus Logic GD7458.

Thanks,
Collin

Re: [XFree86] PROBLEM SOLVED -- 2.6 Kernel + Radeon DRM modules + ATI Radeon Mobility U1 card + XFree86 = crash!

2004-01-27 Thread Logan Rathbone
I'm sure it's probably rude for one to reply to one's own message.. but
I got DRI working.
It was not a fault of XFree86. I downloaded a DRI snapshot from
dri.sf.net, and ran the install script. It didn't exactly generate the
module correctly, but that was easily fixed by compiling my own from
CVS. The difference was, the snapshot install script also updated files
in /usr/X11R6 to prepare it for the new DRM kernel module. So, now
there are no kernel/DRM/DRI mismatches and everything works great!
Just thought I'd let everyone know that there is no bug in XFree86, and
the problem has been fixed.
Thanks.

If your server is growing, it's because one of your running
apps has a server-side resource list that's growing. People
mention growing servers from time to time, but nobody has
discovered any significant XFree86 memory leak to my knowledge.

you have a BIOS graphics memory restriction. Information and a patch can
be found here:

Fixes are included in the 4.4 release candidates, so you could try

Looks like a problem in your config file. Send your

you need to be using the i810 graphics driver, including the i810 kernel
module. Beware of BIOS memory problems, which are common with this
chipset. The archives will tell you more than you ever needed to know

Hello Hanspeter,
yes when i remove that part from config file where i setup my language
(in this case bulgarian) it's work with out any problems.
Yes, actually is no different between Linux and OpenBSD config file for
XFree86.
I don't know that this problem exist in old version of OpenBSD etc.
*BSD* systems because CTRL+ALT+Fx key is for switch consoles in BSD/UNIX
systems (I'm not sure for FreeBSD, can't remmember).
Do any body with OpenBSD 3.4 and X 4.3.0 can make test with this part of
xkb options, no need to write in bulgarina just to start X and tryed to
switch consoles?

Condor

[XFree86] usb mouse trouble on gentoo

2004-01-27 Thread jleddy1
Hello all,

I just started using gentoo linux. I am having trouble configuring the
X sever to use my Kensington mouse in a box usb wireless mouse.

This is the current setup I have in my XF86Config file:

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol""Auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/usbmouse"

It used to be dev/mouse but I since finding that there was a /dev/usbmouse
I have been using that.

The OS clearly recognizes my mouse based on the line:

Jan 27 10:41:50 bing148 input: USB HID v1.00 Mouse /
[Kensington Kensington USB Mouse] on usb1:2.0

on bootup.

If I change the line Driver "mouse" to "hid", the xserver spits out that
it cannot find this module. I in fact compiled it into the kernel, so
I can understand why it can't find it as a module.

If I change
Option "Protocol""Auto"
to
Option "Protocol""usb"
I get this message:
(EE) Mouse1: Unknown protocol "usb"

Will someone please help me out?

My thanks in advance
James M Leddy

Hello Condor,

I have Openbsd 3.3 with XFree86 4.2.1 and none of the XkbXX options
and console switching works for me.
Have you tried disabling all or some of the XkbXX options?

Does the XF86Config file in Linux have the same XkbXX options as in

Does it allocate a new display?

 Thanks to help me :)

ps:i didn't load any modules for my integrated graphic card, but i know it's an 8MB
Graphic Card, so i wrote "8192" to the corresponding grapic memory size in my
XF86Config, and the system looks like having recognized it as a Generic VGA Card.

[XFree86] question on xinit

2004-01-27 Thread Marek Jerczynski
Dear Colleagues,

I would like to ask you for help. Here is my problem:
My crontab launches twice a day a script which starts several times second X
server and vis5d ( which uses this second X server ) to produce a set of maps.
It is very annoying when I work on 1st graphic screen during work of the script
because on monitor I can see by turns 1st screen and 2nd screen. I prefer
to see only 1st screen because I am working on it interactively. Is it possible
to achieve it in any way?

thanks in advance, greetings - Marek Jerczynski

Re: [XFree86] XFree86.0.log

2004-01-27 Thread papenfuss
Your fonts are broken:

Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

Around Redhat 8, they stopped hard-coding font paths into the
XF86Config file and use "xfs" (X font server). Make sure it runs at bootup
(did you turn it off accidentally?). You should see a symlink here:
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root   13 Apr 26  2003 /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S90xfs ->
../init.d/xfs

If you are in runlevel 5, ssh in and try this:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs status

to see if it's running... if not, change 'status' to 'start' and see if
it goes. If it was off but started, make it go on bootup by make the link (or run
redhat-config-services) to make it for you.

That should be enough to get you going.

[XFree86] XFree86.0.log

2004-01-27 Thread Josh Beaman

Hi
there

Just unable to log
in to my Red Hat box. It gets to the area where it wants to start the GUI but
just starts looping. I was able to get this log file by ssh into the busted
machine and running init 3
