Re: [XFree86] Unable to start my X server.

2004-02-20 Thread Wassim Bassalee
Hi Mark,

Thank you for your response.
I noticed considerable slowdown when browsing the Internet. When looking
at the connectivity (indicated by the lights on the modem) I found that it was
going on and off. Juggling the cables slightly seemed to give a steady light on
the modem but Internet browsing showed no improvement. As a matter of fact,
mouse movement and the entire system became extremely slow and minutes later
completely unresponsive.
I couldn't open a terminal, so I rebooted the system. The problem appeared
since.

Now that you are asking about PCI, I noticed in the boot log the following
lines:
<6>PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xfa174, last bus=1
<6>PCI: Using configuration type 1
<6>PCI: Probing PCI hardware
<3>Unknown bridge resource 0: assuming transparent

<6>PCI: Found IRQ 3 for device 01:00.0
<6>PCI: Sharing IRQ 3 with 00:03.0
<6>PCI: Disabling Via external APIC routing

and later

<6>PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:04.0
<6>PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:14.5
<6>Redundant entry in serial pci_table. Please send the output of
<4>lspci -vv, this message (134d, 7897, 134d, 0001)
<4>and the manufacturer and name of serial board or modem board
<4>to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
<4>register_serial(): autoconfig failed

Also when booting the machine interactively I was able to find the following
failures:

Starting ia64fmt: Installing IA-64 interpreters: mount: none
already mounted or /proc/sys/fs/bin-fmt-misc busy
mount: according to mtab, none is already mounted on
/proc/sys/fs/bin-fmt-misc[FAILED]
Starting devfsd deamon: Error opening file: ".devfsd"
No such file or directory[FAILED]

Do you think that this is a problem with the X server itslef or with something
else?

Again, I thank you for your time and response.
Wassim

2004-02-20 Thread Mark Vojkovich
Something catastrophic seems to have happened at a low-level.
That "Cannot read colourmap from VGA" message seems to imply
that writing or reading the video hardware has failed. Did you
change something about the machine? For instance, some bios
settings, or add a new PCI card?

[XFree86] support please

2004-02-20 Thread DJ Ray
Well, I'm getting these errors when I try to send the command 'startx' on my linux box.

"WW: TSENG, NO MATCHING FOR INSTANCE (BUS ID PCI [numbers here]) DEVICE"
And says that about 20 times. Then I get this:

"EE: NO DEVICES DETECTED"

then, looking through the log it says:

"WW: OPEN APM FAILED (/dev/apm_bios)(no such device)"

At the end after trying to run it says:

"Fatal Error:
No screens found

XIO: Fatal IO error 104(connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 request
(0 known processed) with 0 events remaining."

These are the errors I got. If you wish to see the hole log, please tell me how to
copy it onto a floppy, then i'll send it. My video card is: Tseng Labs ET 4000/W32
PCI, 2 meg's memory(number 254 on the given list in 'XF86Config' or at least I think
that's the command, i forgot). I also run Linux 2.4.22 with the Slackware distro. The
XFree86 version I have is 4.3.0. If you could help that would be great. This is my
first time installig linux, but I know my way around through windows and a little bit
through linux via SSH on shells. Please help.

Mine is brighter at the bottom than the top depending on the
angle I view it at. I suppose a monitor could also have uneven
backlight illumination.

[XFree86] ProSavageDDR-K screen blanking on v4.3.0

2004-02-20 Thread Ron Johnson
Hi,

I've got a Shuttle mobo with the KM266 chipset and ProSavage DDR-K
"chip".

I've been using X 4.2.1 and the vesa driver, and was excited when
v4.3.0 was released to Debian. So, I installed 4.3.0, and changed
the
Driver "vesa"
to
Driver "savage"
in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and ran "startx".

The screen blanked. Changing the driver back to vesa works.

Anything I'm missing? Attached is /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and the
gzipped XFree86.0.log from when I used the savage driver, and
that from using the vesa driver.

Many TIA,
Ron

[XFree86] Xfree86 lndir installation

2004-02-20 Thread Wendell Best
Title: Message

Hello,
Decided I would
learn more from Linux if I just installed my Red Hat Fedora minimal and
installed the programs I want myself. So, I'm trying to install XFree86 and it
requires me to create shadow directories using the "lndir" command only it isn't
installed on my computer. The XFree86 download has a setup that I can use to
install it that I tried but got errors (quite frankly, I haven't installed
anything yet that didn't have errors and that is getting real annoying). What
they had me do is go to this directory: xc/config/utils then type in make -f
Makefile.ini lndir which apparently is supposed to make the lndir program from
the source code lndir.c that is in the directory. The error code I get
is:

ln -s ../../include
X11
ln:
'X11/include':File exists
make: *** [lndir]
Error 1

Anybody have an idea
about this or run into the same problem?

[XFree86] mouse problems

2004-02-20 Thread Rolando Abarca
I've checked the online documentation, but I just can't figure out what's
the problem.
Before I recompiled X 4.3.0 to get xv support for my card (Mach64), my usb
mouse (Genius PowerScroll Eye: Two Buttons + Wheel/Button) the wheel was
working perfectly, but now it isn't, it only scrolls down.
This is my XF86Config (mouse section):

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
EndSection

btw, I recompiled X from a cvs source:

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/dri \
 co -r mach64-0-0-6-branch xc

anyone knows what could be the problem?
thanks a lot!

[XFree86] Mouse setup in XF86Config

2004-02-20 Thread pschultz
Hi, I'm writing in response to this passage:

from
http://www.xfree86.org/current/mouse4.html

==
If the "Auto" protocol is specified and the mouse seems working, but you find
that not all features of the mouse is available, that is because the X server
does not have native support for that model of mouse and is using a
``compatible'' protocol according to PnP information.

If you suspect this is the case with your mouse, please send a report to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] .
==

I'm trying to use a USB mouse, and have my XF86Config set up like so:

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol""Auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping""4 5"

But my scroll wheel does not work (ZAxisMapping didn't add this
functionality).
I'm running Gentoo Linux, and it seems like there's a question mark to answer
the question of "are USB mice supported under my OS"
http://www.xfree86.org/current/mouse3.html
for all but some *BSDs.

Any tips or documentation available on how to get USB mice working fully? It
seems like something a lot of people would use.

Thanks,

-Paul Schultz

Re: [XFree86] XFree86-4.3 Problem

2004-02-20 Thread Mark Vojkovich
That looks like an SiS driver bug. I don't know much about
the SiS driver myself. Perhaps you could try one of the pre-4.4
XFree86 snapshots?

Also, I think you may be able to use the sis driver from 4.2 with
your 4.3 server. That is often possible. The server will load
drivers older than it (but not newer).

Hi
Is anyone out there using a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM S3 Trio64

Now I checked the HCL for XFree86 and this card is SUPPOSED to
work but I can't figure out what I am doing wrong, that is if it is me
and not XFree86. I will install again from scratch and send log file
Just trying to see if anybody else has had this problem.

It's supposed to play well with X, although I have only used it to

Hi everybody,

Does an X-extension, application or proxy exists to achieve a
functionality similar to what screen does for terminals?

What I am looking for is display persistency, so you can detach from
your current desktop and reconnect later and get the same desktop you
had.

I've been looking for a while and I've been unable to find any useful
information.

Thanks in advance.

Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't
already running

What I would like to do is have one Xsessions that runs a windows manager
with mouse, keyboard, and touchscreen for inputs and the other xsession
with no windows manager and only a touchscreen for input. I don't want
mouse and keyboard ability on the second Xsession so there is no stealing
of inputs and the touchscreens ability are independent from one another.

So, is this even possible and any help or directions would be appreciated.

Thank you

XFree86 Version 4.2.1 (for OpenBSD) / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 3 September 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: OpenBSD 3.3 i386

Upgrade to OpenBSD 3.4 (which I believe includes XFree86 4.3.0) may be useful to
you.

(--) PCI:*(0:2:0) Intel unknown chipset (0x2562) rev 1, Mem @ 0xe800/27,
0xfeb8/19

The (4.2.1) system does not recongise your Intel video chipset. Some newer 845G*
chipsets may not be supported in 4.3.0, but should be supported (and numerous
bug fixed) in the upcoming 4.4.0 release, of which RC3 is available.

Could you send us your config file, XF86Config(-4), and the error log,
XFree86.0.log (often in /var/log)?

ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.a
ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/Server/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a

If these files are not present reinstall XFree86 rpm's (use --force as needed).

[XFree86] XFree86-4.3 Problem

2004-02-20 Thread Yoshikazu Nakamura
Dear Sir,

I could not start XFree86-4.3 with FreeBSD 5.2-RELEASE although
I did't have any problem when I used XFree86-4.2 with 5.1-RELEAEE.

I attached logfile output, and I am happy if you could send me
any suggestion.

Thank you.
