[XFree86] VESA Problem

2004-02-21 Thread DE DOMMELIN Alexandre (LaoTseu)
Hi !

First, excuse me if my english is not very good ... so i've bought a new
laptop based on a i855 graphical card.
Due to problems with my bios etc ... i have to use the vesa driver to have a
X. The problem is that i can use vesa only in 1024*768*8 ... i explain : if i
choose for example a 16 bits configuration in my XF86Config something strange
happen : X starts, but only the top of the screen is visible. The bottom is
here but it is blured (not visible at all).

Does anyone have an idea please ?
For information, i'm on debian sid, using xfree 4.3.0-1 provided by Debian.

Thanks,

Alex

That chipset works fine here with 1024x768x16 with a 2.6 kernel and a 4.3.99
snapshot (about a month old) on a toshiba laptop.With other laptops you might
have different issues though (BIOS).There are various patches out there that
all work or not to some degree.
Check here http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855patch.html and here

[XFree86] no device found

2004-02-21 Thread DJ Ray
Well, I'm getting these errors when I try to send the command 'startx' on my linux
box.

"WW: TSENG, NO MATCHING FOR INSTANCE (BUS ID PCI [numbers here]) DEVICE"
And says that about 20 times. Then I get this:

"EE: NO DEVICES DETECTED"

then, looking through the log it says:

"WW: OPEN APM FAILED (/dev/apm_bios)(no such device)"

At the end after trying to run it says:

"Fatal Error:
No screens found

XIO: Fatal IO error 104(connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 request
(0 known processed) with 0 events remaining."

These are the errors I got. If you wish to see the hole log, please tell me how to
copy it onto a floppy, then i'll send it. My video card is: Tseng Labs ET 4000/W32
PCI, 2 meg's memory(number 254 on the given list in 'XF86Config' or at least I think
that's the command, i forgot). I also run Linux 2.4.22 with the Slackware distro. The
XFree86 version I have is 4.3.0. If you could help that would be great. This is my
first time installig linux, but I know my way around through windows and a little bit
through linux via SSH on shells. Please help.

Best,
-Ray G.

[XFree86] help: no radeon X11 after Linux 2.4 -> 2.6 upgrade?

2004-02-21 Thread Albrecht Dreß
Hi all,

after upgrading from Linux 2.4.23 to 2.6.2, X11 refuses to start anymore
in accellerated (radeon) mode with the same configuration which works fine
with 2.4. The error message is "no screens found". If I replace only the
radeon driver in XF86Config by fbdev, X11 runs, but **really** slow. Any
ideas how I could track down this problem? I attach my XF86Config as well
as the startup logs for 2.4 (works) and 2.6 (crash).

System details:
* PowerMac G4 Silver running YellowDog Linux, kernel 2.4.23 or 2.6.2;
* ATI RV200 QW (Radeon 7500) w/ Formac Gallery 1740 DFP monitor;
* XFree86 4.3.0 (from YellowDog Linux; I also tried a self-compiled
4.4.0rc2 without success);
* glibc 2.3.1, gcc 3.2.2 (for 4.4.0rc2).

Thanks in advance for any help,

	Albrecht.

   The slowdown sounds like perhaps something bad happened in the kernel.
Were you able to shutdown cleanly or did you have to hit the reset switch.
There may have been disk corruption, in which case, installing a new
X-server might be a good idea (try something newer like 4.3 while you're
at it). Or it's possible that this bad stuff was due to some device acting
weird. Are the /var/log/messages that look suspicious (like panics) back
from when the slowdown happened? Anyhow, it sounds like a system-level
problem, perhaps a hardware problem. Do you have problems with overheating?
You also might want to check that all your cards and ram are plugged in
securely.

  I'm assuming it's not a new machine and you haven't changed anything
recently (like adding new ram)?

Mark.
