[XFree86] Configure Question

2004-03-10 Thread Dave Sorg
I recently bought a used laptop. I installed OpenBSD 3.4 and XFree86 (all
the X files). I am not sure exactly what video card is in the computer, but
I would like to configure the video driver so I can watch movies in Mplayer.
Is there some kind of automated script that will detect my hardware and
configure XFree86 for it? Also, once everything is configured, what do I
have to type to start the video driver and watch my movie (I can hear the
sound on the video when I play it, just can't see the video)?

Cool, I'll try it out.

What directories should I back up so that I can revert to a previous version
if the CVS is unworkable?

I'm running debian.

[XFree86] Help :: Xserver not working

2004-03-10 Thread Aditya Shrivastava
Dear Sir,
I need some help regrading the working of Xserver. The problem that
i m facing is that, my linux machnie currently operating on 9.1 red
hat, boots properly, but just before the GUI login, it displays a
message -

" Unable to start XServer "
There is a problem in loading the bitmap module.

Then it itself tries to configure the XServer, but fails to do so.

Plz suggest me a correct method to solve this problem done.I have got
huge amount of data in that machine, and i m not able to work without
the GUI.

Thanx.

[XFree86] Dual head on ATI Radeon Mobility 9600, Mandrake 9.2 AMD64

2004-03-10 Thread Guy Rouillier
I have the subject graphics chip on the new eMachines M6805 AMD64 laptop, running
Mandrake 9.2 AMD64. I downloaded and installed the Linux-amd64-glibc22 binary
release. "sh Xinstall.sh -check" warned me that I had glibc23, and told me to try the
supplied binary. I've done that, and I'm happy to report that with some manual
tinkering, I have the native 1280x800 resolution on the laptop LCD, as well as the
independent resolution on an external CRT. Much thanks to the XFree86 developers.

The issue I'm having is with dual head and more specifically the gnome-panel. I
configured all this by hand as xf86config/cfg were not much help. Without Xinerama, I
am able to get panels on both displays, and I'm able to relocate them to the top and
bottom as I wish. However, any icons I put on the desktop on the CRT (secondary
display) behave very strangely. If I try to move them, they slide right back where
they were, or sometimes they'll just disappear completely. I can open up terminals
there, however, and the display is not corrupted.

But I really want to work with Xinerama, and that is where I've spent most of my time.
In brief, with Xinerama on, I only get a panel on the LCD, which is fine. I can only
put it on top or on the left. If I drag it to the bottom, it just disappears
completely. Furthermore, if I have it on top, exit, edit XF86Config-4 and turn
Xinerama off, startx, move panels to the bottom (which remember I can do with Xinerama
off), then exit, if I now edit
~/.gconf/apps/panel/profiles/default/toplevels/bottom_panel/%gconf.xml, the "monitor"
setting become "-1". If I turn Xinerama back on at this point, I'll have no
displayed panels on either the LCD nor the CRT. I have to manually edit %gconf.xml
and change monitor to "0" and reset the orientation to "top". I simply cannot get a
bottom panel.

I found the following bug, which seems related:
http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1149

I need some guidance on where the issue might be and what would be most fruitful to
attempt. Should I recompile all the 4.4.0 source with glibc23?

There is no XV for km400 due to Via's excellent policy towards

It's RH9 with XFree86 4.3.0-2.90.55.
Kernels 2.4.20-2.9 an 2.4.24-1.ll.rh90.ccrma from Planet CCRMA. Both
giving equal results.

i830 comes from respective kernel packages; no Intel packages used here.
How about you?

I found out that 24bpp depth the Morph3D OpenGL screensaver from KDE
gives me objects "turned inside-out" like the wrong side of the surface
would be displayed. Doesn't happen with 16bpp. Most other (2D)
screensavers aren't working at all.

Take care,

Miha...

are you using, and do you have the i830.o module from your kernel, or
the module provided by Intel on their page for this chipset?

Last snapshot I tested (some weeks ago) was not working on 855GM for the
1400x1050 resolution. I think this is not planned to be done until

A) Intel gives information needed by David Dawes for the driver.

or

B) Fujitsu Siemens Computers release a bios upgrade including the last intel
bios update which I heard it should include 1400x1050 mode -> (i'm not 100%
sure of this information.)

These guys seems to have the same problem but for another resolution, and they
are all upset about Intel and Fusjitsu :

About the VT issue, is there anything special about your kernel you

Perhaps so, but I read the following in your logfile:
(--) PCI: (0:1:0) Intel Corp. 82810E DC-133 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller]
rev 3, Mem @ 0xe000/26, 0xe640/19

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:01:0
(WW) I810: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:1:0) found

In other words: it detects two graphics controllers, and it makes the SiS one
the primary (compare the ID). It then decides it doesn't have a driver loaded
for it, and shuts down.

[XFree86] Does i855GM work now?

Is the i810 driver fully taking care of all i855 issues now, like the
memory allocation and displaying 1400x1050? I guess it would take a
while to get around testing it myself since probably knoppix won't touch
the 4.4 release due to the licensing. Yeah, I could test the binaries

Check the line below Fatal Server Error (at the end of your log), and then
search this mailinglist for that error message. You'll find it has been

ok, first to give you background info -i have a
dell latitude C600, 256MB ram, 20Gig HDD, P3 1GHz-primary partition with
winxp pro installed,-primary partition created for linux (ext2)-primary
partition created for linux swap file-logical partition created for linux '

windows)i am currently having problems with winxp (blue screen of death
problem) that i cant fix -see tweakxp.com forum (search for UniShieldXP.sys -
there will only be one thread containg that) if you would like to
seehere goes...first of all, i can only
have a certain  number of primary partitions, one must be winxp, then
theres linux, linux swap and linux \boot to choose from, which should be
primary, should i reformat and try installing linux first to make sure the \boot
is the first thing on the disk and to maybe cure any problems with linux i am
having?should i use ext3 for the actual linux partition?i have just
spent a heck of a long downloading the three disk iso's for redhat linux 9 and
have burnt them to diski started the install process, it detects my graphics
card as 'ATI rage 128 mobility' and my monitor as 'unknown'i dont have to go
into text mode, however the setup window is not full screenthe install goes
fine at firstchecking partitionsi create the partitons before
hand-the first time i did the partition bit i selected the check for errors
box for just the one partiton it was to install on, it found errors on it,
(note: i did not make \boot until the third try!)-the second time i didnt
check for errors-before doing the third time i deleted the linux partitons
in windows (using partiton magic 8) and remade them and also made one for \boot
(logical), i then checked all three partitions and found only the \boot had
errors-forth time i checked only the first two (linux & swap) and found
no errors on themi will try doing previous stuff again to try and rid \boot
of errors (the partitions i had made before which i then remade are now
apparently fine, the one i have just made is not fine, do you think i should
delete all partitons and install linux first, formatting the entire drive with a
linux format (ext2/ext3) and then install windows after and see if all my
problems are solved by doing that?)selecting monitorwhen i
got to the stage where you select the monitor-the first time i had a quick
look on the net and i think its a 1024x768 dell laptop model, which i selected
from the list-the second time i left it as unknown-the third time i
skipped the x setup bitwhat happens is this - it reboots and should get
to a setup where you create user accounts and such but it doesntintsead it
scrolls through lots of text, the last i think says 'starting first run' or
something (the first time i load linux and i think its trying to get to that
setup bit)it then just gives me some logon text, i logon as the root account
and type startx (have tried making a user account from here and trying startx
but same prob) but it doesnt work, i get an erroralso, while im logging in,
it flashes black then back to the text a few times before giving a blue box with
just two options -yes and no/cancel, with no description or anything, clicking
no brings up another, then again - just yes, then back to logon. click yes on
the first one and it scrolls through two paragraphs of text and then a sentence
with my graphics card mentioned but ends up not being able to do whatever it was
tryingthe error message after logon & typing

I have attached the XFree86.0.log .It says no devices found.
