[XFree86] Radeon 9200 slow with Xfree86-4.4.0

2004-03-12 Thread Marcus Harnisch
Hi *,

Couldn't find anything helpful in Google.

I used to run 4.3.0 with a Radeon 9200 card (pretendign I had the
ChipId 0x514d) and decent performance. glxgears said something about
1500 fps.

When I upgraded to 4.4.0 (same hardware, Linux kernel), I noticed that
the desktop feels sluggish and glxgears comes up with a mere 500fps.

DRM is enabled.

  $ glxinfo
  name of display: :0.0
  display: :0 screen: 0
  direct rendering: Yes
  [...]

  $ /sbin/lsmod
  [...]
  radeon106720 1
  agpgart17268 1 (autoclean)
  [...]

Switching back to 4.3.0 gives me the good old performance.

The only things that looked funny to me in the 4.4.0 log file
(compared to the 4.3.0 log file ) were many references to PCI rather
than AGP:

Are the references to PCI correct? Shouldn't that be "agp" in most
places?

Any ideas how to fix that?

Thanks a lot,

You can specify the depth to use from the commandline
with syntax like:

"startx -- -depth 8"

assuming you have in your Section "Screen", a Subsection
"Display" for each depth. The DefaultDepth in the Section
"Screen" is the one used when you don't specify a depth.
It is possible for you to start a second X-server on another
VT and switch back and forth between them, or just start
a depth 8 server when you need it. If all your scripts are
OK, something like "startx -- -depth 8 :1" will start a
second X server on another VT.

Re: [XFree86] nVidia nForce2 & Open Source drivers

2004-03-12 Thread Mark Vojkovich
If you are refering to the "nv" driver that comes with XFree86,
it does not support TV-out, nor does it support dual-head operation.
Only single head operation on CRT or DVI is supported. Dual-head
and TV-out support are only available with NVIDIA's binary drivers.

[XFree86] XF86 4.4 - Matrox Mystique (1064SG) glitchy rendering

2004-03-12 Thread ugenn
Hi,

I'm experiencing some glitchy effects with the Matrox driver. Certain operations, like
moving windows would leave remnants of the previous object on the screen or tearing
effects. For example, when I move an xterm, the title bar graphics on the previous
position would be visible. Some apps like Opera would render menus or text with
missing portions.

I see no errors in the logs. Everything else seem to work.

Thank you.
I may sound a little stupid, but what are my options
if I want to stop and restart my X server with an

How do I properly stop the X server running with a

I just need to run on an 8-bit mode occasionnaly.

Looking through CalcVClock() in the nv driver, it looks like 8 MHz
is the lowest clock it can generate. You can hack the driver to allow
down that low. They probably won't work very well though (noisy).
In my opinion, NVIDIA's clocks are dicey even at the advertised 12 MHz
minimum. Maybe you can lower the lower bound "(Freq >= 128000)" in
the calculations to see if you can get a lower clock than that out
if it. You're definitely driving it out of spec at that point though.
Changing that to 10 would be what's needed to allow a 6.44 MHz
clock.

With that card you can only get PseudoColor visuals
by running in depth 8. This is true of most cards.

2004-03-12 Thread Mark Vojkovich
  The entire /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.
Also the output of /proc/mtrr is useful.
Perhaps also, "uname -a" for the kernel version.

To me, your shmput500 benchmark looks reasonable for 32bpp.
The xvtest numbers seem overlay slow.

[XFree86] How to access a specific video mode ("No mode of this name")?

2004-03-12 Thread Jean-Marie Teuler
Dear XFree86 experts,

I have a DELL PC, with an Intel Extreme Graphics network card (865G
chipset) and a 15" LCD monitor (DELL 1504FP).

I have managed to get a 1024x768 resolution with 8 bits colors, but I
know that I could obtain better (on the Windows side, I get 1024x768
with 32 bits colors).

I am running Fedora Core 1, with a 2.4.22-1.2174.nptl kernel and
XFree86-4.3.0-55.

I attach to this message my XConfig86 file and the X server log file.

>From the log file, I see that this resolution is supported

.
(II) I810(0): Supported VESA Video Modes:
...
(II) I810(0): [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(II) I810(0): [EMAIL PROTECTED]
.

Then the log file gives the detailed list of the video modes, and for
instance I see this mode that would suit me

...
Mode: 45 (1024x768)
ModeAttributes: 0x9a
WinAAttributes: 0x7
WinBAttributes: 0x0
WinGranularity: 64
WinSize: 64
WinASegment: 0xa000
WinBSegment: 0x0
WinFuncPtr: 0xc0005ace
BytesPerScanline: 2048
XResolution: 1024
YResolution: 768
XCharSize: 8
YCharSize: 16
NumberOfPlanes: 1
BitsPerPixel: 16
NumberOfBanks: 1
MemoryModel: 6
BankSize: 0
NumberOfImages: 0
RedMaskSize: 5
RedFieldPosition: 11
GreenMaskSize: 6
GreenFieldPosition: 5
BlueMaskSize: 5
BlueFieldPosition: 0
RsvdMaskSize: 0
RsvdFieldPosition: 0
DirectColorModeInfo: 0
PhysBasePtr: 0xe800
LinBytesPerScanLine: 2048
BnkNumberOfImagePages: 0
LinNumberOfImagePages: 0
LinRedMaskSize: 5
LinRedFieldPosition: 11
LinGreenMaskSize: 6
LinGreenFieldPosition: 5
LinBlueMaskSize: 5
LinBlueFieldPosition: 0
LinRsvdMaskSize: 0
LinRsvdFieldPosition: 0
MaxPixelClock: 23000
...

So I put in my XConfig86 file

..
   DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection
..

But, in the log file, I read the following :

..
II) I810(0): Not using mode "1024x768" (no mode of this name)
(II) I810(0): Increasing the scanline pitch to allow tiling mode (640 ->
1024).
(--) I810(0): Virtual size is 640x480 (pitch 1024)
(**) I810(0): Built-in mode "640x480"
..

So, in short, the 1024x768 mode seems unknown, and XFree selects the
default 640x480 mode.

Am I doing something wrong ? Should I use another identifier for this
mode?

For your information, I have tried many things :
1. Modifiy the mode name ([EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED])
2. Increase the HorizSync value (actually this monitor supports 75Hz)
3. Put a mode line in the Monitor Section and reference it (I have used
the "Supported additional Video Mode" listed in the log
4. ... and many other things.

to no avail.

Has anyone a suggestion to solve this problem?

But where does reside this limitation ? How is it possible that a gfx card has
a minimum pixel/seconds limitation ? The arcadeVGA is able to do very low
pclock : http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainf.html
This gfx card has been designed for the purpose I have. But I wonder to know
what is different from other cards? Is the pclock limitation written in the
bios ? Is there a way to force X to use lower pclock than 12.0 even if it
says that the gfx card range is 12.0 - 350 Mhz ?

Ah, many thanks. I just picked up the precompiled binaries for
Linux-ix86-glibc23. Looks like I need to get the sources or build
a kernel with ipv6 support.

Cheers,
Terry.

I suspect you have compiled xdm with IPv6 support enabled (the default) but your
kernel doesn't support IPv6.

Another symptom for this situation would be that chooser started by hand
yields a segmentation fault.

Recompile chooser and xdm without IPv6 support (#define BuildIPv6 NO) and
everything should work as for 4.3.0.

It applyed cleanly, but doesn't work! I made a guess that's the new gcc-3.4,
so I recompiled all (make distcleann && make World) with gcc-3.3 but the
whole systems still locks up.

Please help!

[XFree86] PseudoColor and Linux

2004-03-12 Thread Philippe Bruyant
Hello experts,
I have a Dell PC i686 with an NVidia GEForce FX 5200
PCI graphic card. I am using Linux 2.4.9 and RedHat
7.2 Enigma.

I am trying to use my PC as an Xterminal to connect to
an old Unix system. WHen I try to run a specific
application, I have an error message:
No Pseudovisual visuals
and the program exits.

Does any one if and how I can enable Pseudocolor
visuals on my PC? Can I do that by editing the
XF86Config?
Thanks!
PhilB

[XFree86] problem with 4.4.0 and chooser

2004-03-12 Thread T. Horsnell (tsh)
Hi all,

I have a bunch of linux boxes which display a chooser
and which offer themselves as one of the hosts in the
chooser list.

I achieve this on each box by first starting an Xserver
with the -indirect option pointing to the box itself,
and then starting an xdm session.
'localhost.localdomain' is listed as one of the
hosts in the Xaccess file on each box, and by clicking
on that entry, the user logs into the box directly, rather
than using it as an xterminal to log into a remote host.

The commands I use to start X are:

/usr/bin/X11/X -indirect boxname &
xdm

xdm moans that there is already a server running, but
starts the chooser keeps running itself, servicing requests from the
chooser if the user decides to log into the box itself,
rather than use the box as an xterminal to log into another
host on the chooser list.

This all worked up to and including 4.3.0, but now fails at 4.4.0.

xdm-error at 4.3.0: Redhat 7.1

Fatal server error:

and start again.

Error 97 is:
#define EAFNOSUPPORT97 /* Address family not supported by protocol */

Is this something to do with ipv6?
Is there a better/any way to achieve what I want?
I dont want to use broadcast, as I dont want all the other
linux boxes to appear in each other's chooser list.

Thanks,
Terry.

XFree86's NetBSD mouse code hasn't been updated to handle automatic mouse
device and protocol selection, which is required for automatic configuration
to work. At a minimum, the DefaultProtocol() and FindDevice() functions need
to be implemented for NetBSD in os-support/bsd/bsd_mouse.c. The SetupAuto()
function may be needed too.
I've implemented them for OpenBSD, which shares the same wscons driver
features than NetBSD. I just didn't have time to check that it also
works on NetBSD to enable the code for NetBSD before the 4.4 release.

Adding a few || defined(__NetBSD__) should be enough to get it working.

[XFree86] XFree86-4.40, ssh, and mathematica

2004-03-12 Thread Peter Breitenlohner
1. We have a problem in the interaction between
 XFree86-4.4.0 <=> ssh (openssh-3.7.1p2 or 3.8p1) <=>
 mathematica (5.0 or 4.2)

Assume I am logged into an X-session on "hosta" and then log into "hostb" via
ssh with X-forwarding. If I then start mathematica (the graphical frontend)
I get zillions of messages on stderr:
==

until I exit from mathematica. (If I don't do that fast enough the
mathematica window occasionally freezes.)

This did not happen with XFree86-4.3.0 and does not happen if I bypass the
X-forwarding via "DISPLAY=hosta:0", nor (as far as I know) with any program
other than mathematica.

2. Is this a known problem?

3. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to narrow down and/or
further diagnose this problem.
