Is there any work on supporting portrait mode?

2004-05-20 Thread Barry Scott
I'm trying to get X to drive a display in portrait mode.
But the only driver that seems to work is the nVidia code
and the performance is terrible.

Is there any work to make a fast portrait mode work?

I'm especially interested in support on VIA's CLE266
and the Intel i810. And to make life more fun I need
to play movies, I'm using xine at the moment.

[XFree86] kdriver - Xfbdev freezing

2004-05-20 Thread Dean Adamson

Hi
everyone,

I'm trying to create
a Kdriver Xserver using a framebuffer device. It all compiles fine, however when
I go to run startx the system shows a grey background with a mouse cursor and
then freezes. I have no idea what's going on or why it is doing that. Trying
something else, I decided to run Xfbdev on its own.The grey screen comes
up and mouse cursor is drawn and the mouse + keyboard is still alive. When
Igo to run a app inthis server it draws a white box and then
freezes. It seems that as soon as I go to run an application with the
Xserver, everything freezes. Although I have used prebuilt binaries and
they do work, so its obviously something I'm doing wrong or I have a broken
XFree86 version. Does anyone have a clue? Here are the
details:

[XFree86] Xfree86 and EloTouch USB Touchscreen

2004-05-20 Thread Gerhard Hintermayer
If anyone is going to install any (I)PC with a touchscreen manufactured
by EloTOuch Systems *and* the touchscreen is connected via USB I highly
recommend not buying this machine.
Elotouch is suppling a beta driver for USB touch devices, which
obviously never ever worked. I was i contact with Elotouch Germany for
over 2 weeks, and they were not able to get any feedback from the
development guy in the usa. Neither emails nor phonecalls made this guy
react in any way. So after 2 weeks I give up, asked the PC manufacturer
to change the USB inteface to a serial one. I'm planning to use the
EloTouch driver supplied with the XFree86 distribution.
So *DONT* buy EloTouch touchscreens with USB interface, unless you wan't
to get into really deep trouble.

[XFree86] Dualhead: BusID PCI:1:0:1: No matching Device section on Solaris x86

2004-05-20 Thread Alex Deucher
you need to use PCI:1:0:0 for both instances. PCI:1:0:1 is just a a
place holder so that two devices show up in the windows device tree.
the problem is no monitor is detected on your second port:
(II) RADEON(0): Displays Detected: Monitor1--Type 1, Monitor2--Type 0
you need to force it on by adding:
Option monitorlayout CRT, CRT
to your PriAti device section. See the radeon man page for more.
Also the DVI port is always the primary crtc.

Alex

I have trouble getting a dualhead setup to work with a Radeon 9600 Pro
card on Solaris x86 (Solaris 10 Express). The Solaris I tried came with

4.3.0, and after several days hitting my head to the wall I downloaded
4.4.0 from www.tools.de/solaris/xf86.

The Radeon has a CRT plugged into the primary connector. The secondary
connector has another CRT with a DVI-VGA converter. Both of the
screens
display the same picture, and this has been the case from day 1. The
identical displays are also shown during BIOS messages etc. so it
appears the dual display is on by default.

RE: [XFree86] help with debian on compaq

2004-05-20 Thread Cynthia Grossen
Knoppix does a good job with the autodetection routines. It also has
very conservative default settings. For example its default with XFree86
is to use the vesa driver. This driver almost always works unless your
font server crashes and Knoppix doesn't use a font server.

You can use Knoppix to get XFree86 setup if you wish. Just copy the file
/etc/X11/XFree85Config-4 to your hard drive after you've got everything
configured to your satisfaction. You can also install Knoppix to your
hard drive, it's based on Debian. :)

Just in case you haven't already found it, here is the link to the
English language Knoppix resource site.

building from source. I'm kindof green.

Here's a possibly relevant question: Howcome knoppix does X so sweetly

this fact to help me get going?

Hi Alex,
Thank you for extra info about the PCI assignments.
Problem is every time I try to use the PCI:1:0:0 the server crashes
(Signal 11). When I added the
   Option monitorlayout CRT, CRT
to the PriAti, the resolution on the monitor on the analog port of
9600 changed into 640x480 with desktop size 1600x1200 but the behaviour
of server was still the same. The monitor on DVI port was as before.

What is the radeon man page you're referring to. I only found this readme:

On recent versions of XFree86, simply add -nolisten tcp to the
command line options used to start it. I don't remember if that

[XFree86] Problems using G450 dualhead (mga) and onboard S3 (Savage) drivers under SUSE 9.1

2004-05-20 Thread Simon Bazley
Information:
I just spent 6 hours trying to get a G450 Dual head card to work with my
onboard S3 ProSavage, and by the response I got from google, I must be
the first, so I thought I write this for any sorry sole attempting it in
the future. I guess much of this would be the same for any graphics
card working with the G450.

I have a Shuttle SK41G, and was using the onboard graphics as my sole
head. Sax2 detected this as a S3 ProSavage DDR-K (savage). Everything
worked fine.
Then I decided to buy a Matrox G450 Millenium 32MB DDR PCI card so I had
could have 3 monitors. I've tried a ATI Radeon 7000 AGP with the
Shuttle SK41G in the past, and found that use of the AGP slot, turns off
the onboard graphics chip, so you must use a PCI unless you want to
replace the onboard chip.

Two notable problems, I had to ensure AGP was set as the primary
display, so as to have the ProSavage as my main screen on bootup. This
is also the first screen as detected by SuSE's sax2. Also I found that
sax2 insists on putting Option NoHal in the mga device sections, which
kills the card in Dual Head mode. I had strange but occasionally
successful results with one montior disconnected in this mode.

Everything began to work, but badly with 'Option UseBIOS off' in the
ProSavage section. The world became reliable and rosey with 'Option
ShadowFB' in the second G450 section.

Supprisingly mga_hal doesn't seem to be needed and the NoHal option just
breaks things.

After much experimentation this XF86Config setup seemed to work (Most
XF86Config sections left out as they have nothing to do with the
problem) Module may also be an unneccesary section, I don't know so I
left it in :-

[XFree86] Video Card problems

2004-05-20 Thread alessandro mantoan
Dear Colleagues,
I am having very much troubles with my Radeon 7500 64 Mb video card, Woody
release of Debian does not recognize the screen. I am not able to find a
driver or the way to let it work.
I report here below all the messages of the XFree log.

What I already tried was re-installing all Debian with different
installation option. I tried to update the kernel to 2.4.18 but I couldn't.
Could you give any help? I am desperately looking for somebody who had the
same trouble in the newsgroup and similar, it's hard... it seems that the
XFree configuration is only mine and nobody else's.
The important point of the messages you may find it at the end of this log.

Thank you very much for your any help.
Alex

Hi all, this is my first time sending to a mail list
like this, so please forgive any bad etiquete that I
may have. I am running gentoo on a duron 1300 with a
nVidia Geforce video card. X starts fine and kde runs
ok too. However, when I switch to su as a user, I
can't run any X-based apps. Like emacs for example or
anything else, below is the error msg I get as well as
 my config file.

Also, I notice that X has a nice value of 0. I would
like to change that -19 but I haven't been able to.
 Any hints?

 Thanks a lot

%emacs (as su, while logged in as bruyere, a normal
 user)
Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
 Xlib: No protocol specified

emacs: Cannot connect to X server :0.0.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set
 to permit
 connections from your machine.

Hello,

Well, I think the error message is rather clear. When you log in a X
session,
by default, only the user which is logged can launch X applications,
because
he is the only user to have the right to connect to the X server.

So when you want to launch an application as root for instance, you have to
do
2 things :

- root : set the DISPLAY variable (as said above) : export DISPLAY=:0
 or setenv
DISPLAY :0

- user who has launched X : tell the X server to accept connections from
others : xhost +

Be careful, 'xhost +' disable protection so any computer can access to your
X
server.

I don't knowan other solution, bu it is strange that you have to do 'xhost
+'.
Maybe you can allow connections for certains users on the local machine,
not
only for certains machines (ie, a user-based authentication and not a
machine-based authentication).

And it's strange that root can't conect to the X server by default (it's
the
same on Debian)..

I believe only root can set priorities below zero. The
startx script probably runs with root permissions so maybe
you can use nice (man 1 nice) to set it in that script.

[XFree86] installing X Windows Server question

2004-05-20 Thread jimmyyl
I have problems on installing X windows Server by XFree86 on Debian Linux.
The following are the major error messages.
(WW)The directory /usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic doesnt exist
Entry deleted from font path.
(WW)Cannot open APM
(--)PCI:#(1:0:0) NVidia unknow chipset (Ox0253)rev162
(--)Assigning device setting without bus ID to primary devices.
(EE) No devices detected.

There is a line started with (II) contains a list of Video Card model. My
Video Card is Geforce4 Ti4200 and it is not included in the list. Is that
means the XFree86 does not support Geforce4?
Should I upgrade the XFree86?
Thanx

Re: [XFree86] installing X Windows Server question

2004-05-20 Thread Mark Vojkovich
The nv driver that comes with XFree86 didn't support the
GeForce4 cards until XFree86 4.3. Alternatively nvidia has
binary drivers available on their web site that should work
with your current XFree86 version. The XFree86 project can
only provide technical support for the driver that comes with
XFree86, however.
