Re: SOLVED: 1400x1050 on a Dell 510m

2004-06-01 Thread Sergio Luiz Carmelo Barroso

Hi,

First of all, thanks to everybody for trying to make things work.

Now, to the problem. I have this brazilian notebook, Novadata N8800,
actually a Compal CY27 (?), or similar. Using lspci, I get for the
graphics card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device (rev 02)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corp. 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics
Device (rev 02)

Right now, under Linux, X (Free86 or Org) only works in 800x600 or
640x480. It can not make 1024x768.

I tried both versions of the 855resolution utility on my notebook. None
worked. Previously, I have tried XFree4.4, and XFree 4.3.X with and
without the 855patch from Christian Zietz. None worked either.

WinXP runs under 1024x768, and the X server from XiG also runs under
1024x768. WinXP tells that the VBIOS version is "2880".

When I do "855resolution -l" with version 0.1, I get:
Chipset: 855GM
BIOS Configuration area offset: 0x0c20 bytes
BIOS Version: 80Mo

And, when I use version 0.2, the output is:

I would appreciate any help to get the Xserver working with Debian. I
have been told many times that Debian is the best distro so when the
Australian Personal Computer Magazine for June 2004 had a free DVD with
this distro I had to try it. But after the complete installation has
gone apparently perfectly, it makes several attempts to bring up the GUI
and collapses with ¨no screens¨. I have been through this several
times, always with the same result.

Now I have used several other distros and versions and my system has
always automatically set up XFree86 so what is wrong with Debian? I
have reverted to Mandrake 9.2 for the moment.

I attach the Xfree86.0.log file from my Debian attempts. Apologies for
the size of this file.

My screen is a LG L1512S although Morphix and Knoppix say it is a GSM
3b64. It appears to only want to operate at 1024x768 which is OK with
me. The on-board video card is SiS650. I see that Debian 3.0r2 uses
XFree86 4.3.0 which is the same as with Knoppix although the kernel
versions are not the same.

Should I copy the XF86Config and XF86Config-4 files produced by Knoppix
and replace those created by Debian?

Please help! Log file is attached.
This log is not from Debian and I don't see any no screens found
errors there.

RE: [XFree86] Problems using Xfree4.4 with Solaris 8 and a Silicon Motion SM722 graphics device

2004-06-01 Thread Simon Egerton
Hi Marc,

I tried installing the aperture driver, but this had no effect on my system. I'll
look into the Int10 driver when I have some spare time...

Cheers,

Simon.

ix86 base board using a Silicon Motion 722 graphics device. I've installed
the Solaris 8 binaries and configured the XF86config file, but when I launch
XFree I'm left with a blank screen. I've tried the same hardware set-up
under Linux, installing again from the 4.4 binaries, and everything works
fine. I've attached the respective log files, Solaris and Linux. From the
Solaris log file I can see that the video BIOS is not detected, and the
Silicon Motion driver is stuck in a loop issuing video reset commands.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Is there a fix or workaround to
get XFree working under Solaris with this SM graphics device?

Here's something you can try on the Solaris side. Do everything as root.

Install the aperture driver. Intructions for this are in README.Solaris.
Ignore the part of it that says the aperture driver shouldn't be required in
your situation.

After the reconfiguration boot back into Solaris, but before starting the
server, ensure that /dev/fbs/aperture exists and move (or rename) /dev/xsvc.
Now start the server.

I can't promise that this'll work, but if it does, you'll end up with a
functional setup (and I have changes to make for the next release). If this
doesn't work, it's likely Solaris clobbers the BIOS data the server needs, in
which case changes to the int10 module will be needed to always re-initialise
the adapter.

Marc.

Follow the above link, it offers two solutions. I recommend setting your

Good luck and use google if you have additional questions this question

RE: [XFree86] fatal error - no screen found

2004-06-01 Thread Cynthia Grossen
You need to use a more recent version of XFree86. Upgrade to at least
version 4.3 and preferably 4.4.

Everything worked great untill i installed the Embedded Linux Development

If you know how to fix this that would be great!

RE: [XFree86] Can't run X

2004-06-01 Thread Angela Burrell
Never mind... I figured it out.

The Mandrake installer did not install all of the XFree86 packages. I
manually installed them from the command line, and now X works.

Thanks.

[XFree86] can't find keymapping file

2004-06-01 Thread Timothy D. Johnson
I am trying to use XFree86/XDarwin. I don't have any keymapping files
under /System/Library/Keyboards. In fact, there is no directory
Keyboards under /System/Library. I am running OSX 10.3.4.

Is there somewhere else where these files are found, or where can I get
them?

[XFree86] [xterm] Tek 4014 graphics cursor

2004-06-01 Thread Joel Konkle-Parker
I've been digging through manpages and searching on Google, but I can't find anything
that describes how to use the graphics cursor in the xterm Tek 4014 mode. There's
plenty on what it does when you do use it, but I can't figure out how to activate it
in the first place.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [XFree86] fatal error - no screen found

2004-06-01 Thread Mark Vojkovich
no screens found can happen for a number of reasons. The most
common is that your video card is too new to be recognized by your
version of XFree86. The server you are running is years old, so
that is not suprising. XFree86 4.4 is the current version.

[XFree86] Installation Problems on OS X

2004-06-01 Thread Alex Stork
I recently downloaded the latest version of
XFree86, 4.4.0. I am running OS X version 10.2.8 and
I installed the necessary components:
Extract
XInstall.sh
Xbin.tgz
Xdoc.tgz
Xetc.tgz
Xfenc.tgz
Xfnts.tgz
Xlib.tgz
Xman.tgz
Xquartz.tgz
Xxserv.tgz

I placed them all into a folder called XFree 86 on my
desktop.

In the Terminal, I typed
cd Desktop/XFree86
then,
sh /Users/myname/Desktop/XFree86/Xinstall.sh
The installation started, and I pressed y to continue.
As I began installation, every file it began
extracting gave the following error
Could not Create file: Permission Denied. In the end,
an application called XDarwin was created in my
Applications folder, but it would not launch when
opened.

Since I am the administrator on my computer,
(being the sole user) how can I give the XInstaller
permission to write those files?

   Thank You,

  Alex Stork

[XFree86] ATI Radeon 7500LE

2004-06-01 Thread Don Kuzenko
I still can't send log file or my Config file, but I have tried a number
of things and I can't use a depth of greater than 15 bits

Radeon 7500LE
XFree86 4.3.0
If I try to set a depth greater than 15, when I run startx, it crashes
and all soutput to my monitor stops. It appears that the log file does
not get written to in this case. The crash must occur before the first
file I/O to the log file. I have to reset my machine.

Any ideas, anyone else experienced this? Is 4.4.0 supposed to have
better support for the radeon?
