The security level on your FreeBSD system is set to high to
allow running of the X-Window systems. It must be lowered so
that XFree86 can access registers.

There are two instances of FOR_NSCREENS in the original code -- which one is
supposed to be changed?

And are you saying that changing FOR_NSCREENS will fix the problem alone, or
that the patch is also needed?

Thanks.

[XFree86] numlockx and switching to console don't work :-/

 Obscurity, linux)

Hello!

I noticed that X no longer sends kp_8 kp_2 ... but kp_up kp_down
... keysyms to Emacs, I thought that it is a numlock issue so I
installed numlockx application to turn on my numlock.

Unfortunately it fails:

,
| ignotus agony:~ [1752:1]% numlockx on
| X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
| Major opcode of failed request: 148 (XTEST)
| Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (X_XTestFakeInput)
| Value in failed request: 0x0
| Serial number of failed request: 19
| Current serial number in output stream: 22
| zsh: exit 1 numlockx on
`

(I use my real numlock key for switching keyboard mouse on/off.)

I thought the reason of numlockx not working was maybe my xserver being
too old (4.2.something), so I upgraded that to 4.3.0 (Debian sid).
Numlockx still did not work, but I got a lot more severe problem:
control-alt-f1 became control-alt-f13, c-a-f2 became c-a-f14 etc, so now
I can't switch to a console or to another x server (only with Linux
magic sysrq key).

How can I solve these problems?

Ps: news.gmane.org lists lot of xfree86 newsgroups, I tried
gmane.comp.xfree86.expert and gmane.comp.xfree86.newbie, both seems to
be dead for me (~1 year old messages are the newest), so I subscribed to
this list.

Thank you! That did the trick! But, what is PreProcessCmd used for?
For instance, in linux.cf it is set to:

#define PreProcessCmd   CcCmd -E

while CppCmd is:

#define CppCmd  cpp

as you suggest.

At any rate, my new XFree86 is running great now!

[XFree86] Monitor/Driver Problem

2004-09-25 Thread alupu
Hi Thomas,

1. Alex claimed:
>> There was no way to fix the refresh rate (to the needed 85Hz)
>> in Windows (2000 or XP)

Thomas wrote (excerpts):
> In 2000, … select a different monitor than "generic" or "pnp",

> In the area below, you can choose a fixed vertical refresh rate.

In 2000, the maximum “Standard” choice is
“SuperVGA 1024x768 @ 75Hz”
In XP, the maximum refresh choice is
“SuperVGA 1024x768” (still @ 75Hz, maximum actual rate)
I don’t know Europe, but here in the States, 75 is assumed to be
the maximum “default” rate for an unknown monitor (or put it
another way, Microsoft wants to avoid law suits from US users
willing to smoke their old monitors at higher rates. Maybe EU
disallows suits up to 85 :-) )
BTW, in my many futile attempts to fix the Windows monitor
problem, I tried to add/change many relevant values in the
registry (there are basically three main keys - and then their
subkeys - governing the video display, to no avail.
But I’m digressing …

Actually, Hitachi monitor’s driver allows higher rates than 75,
and duly records them in the registry, but as I said at the start
of this thread, once the monitor is up and running when Windows
starts up, the refresh rate drops to 75Hz maximum.
Only when the monitor does not identify itself (like when you keep
it powered off for the whole duration of Windows start-up,
you can get the desired 85Hz and then you can set it higher
(to 120, if you want).

2. Thomas answered with a beautiful, detailed explanation a few
questions regarding the Xfree86.log asked by Alex.
Alex: Many thanks.

How can I have my monitor start up in, say,
800 x 600 x 60 Hz mode?

4. Here the plot thickens . . .

The one in ProcPanoramiXShmPutImage().

The strace doesn't show enough of each packet read by the server to know for
certain if the application requested events in its original XShmPutImage(), so
I don't know for certain that this will fix the problem. But the fix is a
definite candidate.
