[XFree86] XFree86 locks up with Radeon 7500

2004-10-08 Thread Matthew Kase
I'm posting this in a desperate attempt to get XFree86 working with an ATI
Radeon 7500 video card. Here are the details of my configuration:

PC: Dell Optiplex GX1, PIII 550, 512MB RAM
OS: FreeBSD 5.2.1
Video: ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP on-board (at PCI 1:0:0)
Radeon RV200 QW [Radeon 7500] PCI card with DVI and analog ports
(at PCI 2:11:0)

I am using the stock XFree86 Version 4.3.0. There is no setting in the main
system BIOS to disable the on-board video chip, however, it appears to be
automatically disabled when another video card is installed.

XFree86 works perfectly using only the on-board Rage Pro video. When
XFree86 is properly configured to use the Radeon 7500 the system simply
locks up - I can't access other terminals or do anything. In addition, when
the system locks up no new XFree86 log file is created.

NOTE: The XFree86 log file I'm attaching has a deliberate misconfiguration
in it. Its the only way I can get a log file to appear (no log file is
created when system locks up).

How can I intercept or detect when a buttonpress event has happened on a
window menubar, or outside the windows I created in Xwindows?

The window decorations are created by the window manager. The usual
way is to create a window slightly larger than the window being
decorated, and reparent the client window into that one. What you
could do, is to listen to the events you want from the parent of your
window. I'd strongly advise against it, though. Users expect
consistent behavior when clicking window titles and similar, and
circumventing that isn't nice, even if you manage to get along with
the window manager about it.

What is it you are trying to accomplish? Maybe there is a better
solution.

You have in your monitor section that your monitor can only
do one frequency:

HorizSync 54
VertRefresh 90

You have no modelines that match that frequency.
Do you really have a fixed frequency monitor? If you
do, you'll need a custom modeline. Most likely, you have
a multisync monitor like everyone else and you need to
enter the correct horizontal and vertical sync ranges
found in your monitor manual.

Mark.

Can I use a XSelectInput on the Root Window? I don't need to intercept
the buttonpress events on other windows or the titlebar, I only need to
know when they happen. I made a file menu for a window and need to
close the file menu when a button is released on the titlebar or a
different window (although then, I can use the focusout event). I wish
button click on the titlebar could be recognized. The menu windows are
"override_redirect" windows.

thanks

You can use XSelectInput in any window. What most programs do, and
which I hate, with menus is to grab the mouse while the menu is open.
This gets particularly irritating with programs that have the bad
habit of freezing with a menu opened.
