[XFree86] Prob. with XServer

2003-06-13 Thread Anirban Sinha

Hi !!

I have a intel 845 glva motherboard running RedHat linux 8. Due to poor
graphical resolution, I recently downloaded te entire 4.3 version of
Xwindows (abt 70 mb) and installed it. Unfortunately, after installation (it
said the installation completed successfully), when i rebooted, i did get
a graphical screen with mouse, as if its just trying to bring the logon
screen, but the logon screen never comes and the system remains like that.
when i kill XWindows and login from console and then use 'startx', it
directly goes to gui under the root's account without teh graphical logon
screen. Then, when i click teh logout menu, the logout confirmatuon dialog
never comes.

Can anyone please tell me, whats the problem with the XWindows? Also,
previously, under RedHat 7, i cld use Xconfigurator and test my settings.
Under the new Xwindows system, i no longer find the "XConfigurator" command,
neither it is listed in "setup". How can i get the text based graphical
configuration tool?

Please help me with this, since i am really stuck ...

[XFree86] XFree 86 No GUI

2003-06-14 Thread Anirban Sinha

hi!!

I recently installed RedHat Linux 8 system in my computer with XFree86
version 4.2.0. However, since I am unable to get a resolution higher than
800 * 600 and i wanted 1024*768 resolution, I downloaded the latest
version (full package along with optional components) of XFree86, 4.3
(Linux-ix86-glibc23) from
ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.3.0/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc23/ and
installed it exactly according to to the instructions given in the XFree86
website. However, when i try to start XWindoows, I am unable to do so and
the process ends with a fatal error. I am attaching the entire log file
(/var/log/) for
your inspection.

The specs for my computer are: Pentium 4, 1.8 Ghz, 128 mb ddr ram,
Original Intel 845 GLVA board with onboard sound and graphics, 40+10
gb hdd running Windows XP Professional version on the primary partition of
my master hard disk (40 gb). I installed Linux on the second hard disk,
slave (10 gb) with 259 mb swap, 30 mb boot and 3.9 gb '/' partition and 1.2
gb '/home' partition.. The remaining space of the 10 gb hard disk (about 4
gb) is formatted with FAT32
filesystem so that I can access it from windows. I used workstation
installation option while installing Linux and formatted the boot, '/home'
and '/'partition with ext3 file system. I use grub as my bootloader and by
default, after 10 secs, I boot into Windows.

Also, I am unable to find the text based graphical configuration tool that
used to come with RedHat 7.1 and lower versions of Linux ('Xconfigurator').
Where is Xconfigurator and if absent, whats the alternative text based
graphical tool provided for XConfiguration provided with RedHat Linux?

Please give me directions and suggestions as to how I can install latest
version of XFree86 in a trouble free way. I wld be really grateful since I
desperately want a 1024x768 resolution in linux. and btw, as is mentioned in
the installation guide, I have backed up the previous /usr/X11R6, /etc/X11 &
/etc/fonts directories before installing the latest XFree86 version.

regards,

Anirban.

[XFree86] Automatic GUI mode changing preferrence

2003-06-17 Thread Anirban Sinha
Hi!!

I have a peculiar problem. I would be really grateful
if anyone herecan give me a solution to this problem.
When I installed RedHat linux 8 in my machine, during
XConfiguration, I had told it to load the GUI
automatically. So, during booting, my machine
automatically loads the graphical log-on screen. But
now I want to change this. I want to use character
user interface as default and start the graphical
interface later, whenever i please, using the 'startx'
command. Where and how can i change this setting and
in which file is this settng stored?

Thanking you in anticipation,

Anirban

Unfortunately, it did not work either. Attaching the log and config file for
ur inspection. This time, it did enter into graphical interface with
1024*768 resolution, but the best I cld have was the TWM desktop manager
with 3 graphical comand windows and nothing more. No GNOME, no KDE.
disgusting! What i wanted, after logging in text mode and then using
'startx' to log into any user account with either KDE or GNOME simply did
not work. I tried 'switchdesk GNOME' but whatever i do, i get nothing more
than the twm graphical envoronment.

I am sort of given up in my efforts in XFree86 installation. Appears that i
need to wait for RedHat 9 and see if that solves my probs ...

But if anyone can plzz guide me through this problem, it wld no doubt be a
great help .

Thanking u,

Anirban

I am not pro but I can see in your log file
II) I810(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 50.00-120.00 kHz
(II) I810(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 30.00-61.00 Hz

Are you sure you have not swapped the info concerning the frequencies of
your
monitor (the vertical and horizontal frequency) ?
In your XF86Config-4 file, invert HorizSync and VertRefresh... after
verifiyng
that is correct of course :)
Moreover, your Section "Screen" could be :
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor"Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
Subsection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection
htp.
