[XFree86] Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM S3 Trio64 card

2004-02-20 Thread HdrCyt1

Hi
Is anyone out there using a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM S3 Trio64
card with XFree86 4.3 or any version for that matter. When I try to
start X I get a server crash message saying no devices found.
Now I checked the HCL for XFree86 and this card is SUPPOSED to
work but I can't figure out what I am doing wrong, that is if it is me
and not XFree86. I will install again from scratch and send log file
Just trying to see if anybody else has had this problem.
 Thanks
 Brian

I have the same card. Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM S3 Trio64 on my
older Pentium Pro 200 Mhz machine. I am new to Linux but I can tell
you that I can not seem to get this card to work with XFree864.3, XFree86 4.1 or XFree86 3.3. Now, I have tried the textmode install
and that doesn't seem to work. The last error line in my XFree86.log file
states something to the effect of no PCI device found so I was thinking that I picked the wrong driver. Nope tried again and the X still doesn't start. Wait I'm not done yet. When I installed via the script utility on the
the install menu I checked out the card database. Man, would you believe this crap. According to this the card we have is unsupported
Advice was to try generic vga but that didn't work either. I am fed up
with XFree86. I tried to get help on forums and I am told the card is
supported but it doesn't work. Various hardware compatibility charts I have found on the web also say this card is supported but it does not work. SO IF YOU GET THIS CARD TO WORK PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW YOU DID IT! Here is one way I tried. Until the the card works you are stuck with textmode anyway so try this and see what happens:
I am new to this myself but here goes
You have to configure XFree86 as root or superuser :
I am assuming that you know have installed a Linux distro and know how
to login and get to root or superuser - if you don't let me know I will help
Now this is what I did
Go to /usr/X11/bin
Type xf86configthen answer the set up questions.
Important to answer yes when the video card question asks you to
look in card database. This is where you will see the unsupport for this
card.
On some Linux distros the files may not be located in exactly the same
place so if you can't find the directory above or file do this
 whereis xf86config
or whereis /usr/X11
You can also go to /etc/X11 - This is where the XFree86 configuration
files are on my system - Again if not on yours do
whereis XF86Config - When you find this file you will also see other
config files. ButI think you can edit the XF86Config file. Just
type vi Xf86config or use whatever editor youwant or is available
I use vi just because it is the first editor I learned in Linux so far.
After you configure logout as root and login as normal user
Then type startx - If x starts you did it - if not I know the feeling
There is a log file in /var/log/XFree86.0.log that you have to view
as root but it logs start attempts by X so you or someone else will need
to look at this file to help you but the last lines in my log file say
 No matching device section
 no devices detected
Good luck - I know that there are other ways but Ihonestly lack the
knowledge at this point to try them ( I am a newbie ). Video hardware
programming is not myfield.PLEASE, PLEASE let me know if you get this card working and how you did it
Thanks

[XFree86] XFree86 4.3 with Diamond Stealth card

2004-02-10 Thread HdrCyt1

Hi
I am frustrated. I have tried everything to get XServer configured but
I cannot seem to find the right configuration.
Description of my system is:
Processor is Pentium Pro S 200 MHz with 32MB memory
OS is FreeBSD 4.9 with XFree86 4.3 (I purchased it in 4 CD set)
Video Card is Diamond Multimedia Stealth 64 DRAM
with 2 MB video Ram and S3 Trio 64 chip
Other numbers on the chip inlcude(I have no idea what they mean)
GACC2
86C764-P
9519 F32753
Here is my problem:
When I try and do a post-install config of Xserver I do not see my
Diamond card listed under the video cards section so I choose S3
or generic VGA. Then under the chipset section I choose my chipset
which is actually S3 Trio 64 so I choose S3 Trio 32/64.
Is my Diamond card supported or not? I get conflicting answers
when I search on the web for answers so I am turning to you for
HELP!! PLEASE!!

[XFree86] Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM video card

2004-02-10 Thread HdrCyt1

Hi
I am confused and frustrated. I can't seem to get this XServer config
right. I have tried a few different things but nothing seems to work.
I am getting confusing info from web searches saying that my video
card is supported with XFree86 4.3.
Here is my system description:
Processor: Pentium Pro S 200 MHz with 32 Mb Ram
OS: FreeBSD 4.9(purchased 4 CD set with XFree86 4.3)
Video Card: Diamond Multimedia Stealth 64 DRAM
Video Chipset: S3 Trio64
Video Ram : 2 MB
Other numbers straight off the chip on the card are:
GACC2
86C764-P
0519 F32753

Here is my problem:
When I do a post-install configuration of Xserver using ncurses-based
config tool my Diamond card is not listed in the cards section but
my chipset is listed in the chipset section. So, I tried choosing S3
as my video card - no luck. Then I tried choosing generic vga -no luck
Please advise as what to do because I can't seem to locate a CLEAR
and CONCISE way of configuring this card. All I find is that my card
is supported. Is my video card supported or not??
 Thanks,
Brian (newbie in case you couldn't tell)
