[XFree86] Video Card Question

2003-03-17 Thread Ken Stanley

I'm building a new computer and thought maybe the X experts could give me their advice on which is the best video card with the best support under X. Basically I'm looking for highest resolution:color depth and easy setup under X. Thank you.

That's news to me.

No, but there tend to be problems on server reset because those code
paths are only rarely tested in the drivers - see the recent threads
about lockups on server reset with the radeon driver.

Restarting the server instead of only resetting it usually works around
these problems; for gdm, set

AlwaysRestartServer=true

in gdm.conf to achieve that.

Actually in the latest version of GDM it's default to restart the server:

# If you are having trouble with using a single server for a long time and

# want gdm to kill/restart the server, turn this on

# Note: I've made this default to true now because there seem to be some

# issues ranging from some things not being reset in the X server to

# pam issues with the slave.  It is likely that this feature may be removed

# in the future and we're always going to do server restarts.

Are you using the framebuffer? That can sometimes freeze when leaving x.

Tom

I don't believe so. The only frame buffer I know about is when I use the vga option from LILO -- and up until an hour ago I couldn't use LILO because my mainboard didn't recognize my hard drive. I flashed my BIOS to fix that, also in hopes to fix X somehow. Didn't fix X. But I did find out that it has no problem using a different video card/mainboard/cpu. Could it somehow be a conflict between the savage driver and GDM? I feel like I've made progress, but I'm not sure how much or in which direction.

Try disabling your sound card, so that sound drivers do not load
at all. Then try starting and stopping X. If that solves it,
then the sound drivers are potentially buggy.

Actually, I don't have sound enabled already because this computer doesn't have a sound card. And when I tried compiling a new kernel I didn't compile sound drivers. I turned them off.

Another common problem is APM. Disable APM in your BIOS, and
disable apmd from being loaded at OS boot time.

Same as above, I don't have it, disabled it, and did not compile it in the customer kernel. Someone on another forum suggested it might be a hardware issue and to see if there is an update to my BIOS. I am going to try that first. Another thing I can try is to switch the hard drive out with the Windows 2000 machine and try to load X that way... that would definately tell if it's hardware.

If neither suggestion works, it could be an X bug possibly, or
perhaps something else.

[XFree86] X 4.3 Freezes Computer when restarting

2003-03-15 Thread Ken Stanley
When I try to restart X 4.3 my computer freezes completely after the
screen goes blank. Something about X is not shutting down properly. I
use Gnome 2.2, but it can't be that because this also occured when using
twm as the window manager. What could cause X to behave this way?

[XFree86] Two Mouse Issues w/4.3.0

2003-03-12 Thread Ken Stanley
I have two mouse issues I have been looking to fix. The first was kind
of touched on a little in another thread, but if you don't mind I'll
rehash it some here. I have a KVM switch that I use to go between Linux
and Windows. It works fine under Windows, but under Linux (XFree 4.3.0)
the mouse freezes when switching back. The only reason I bring it up
again is because I used to use Mandrake 9.0 (XFree 4.2.1) and it was
never a problem. I could switch back and forth all day long and no
problems. It seems something has changed (IMHO for the worse) in 4.3.0
that takes that functionality away. I've also set my mouse protocol to
"Auto" which doesn't help either. While the switching to a VT is a
work-around, it doesn't seem that it would be viable to have to do that
every single time. Could this possibly be a bug, or maybe even a piece
of code was taken out of the 4.3.0 that inadvertantly caused this new
unwanted behavior? Could someone with knowledge of the source possibly
look into that? My second issue is with my scroll button. Again, using
4.2.1 it worked beautifully. However again, in 4.3 no matter what
settings I use in my XF86Config I just cannot get my wheel to scroll. My
mouse section looks like:

Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "IntelliMouse Explorer"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "Device""/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "6 7"

EndSection
Is there something there that is missing or wrong that I need to change
to get the wheel to function properly? I know X is recognizing it's
existence because if I press down on the wheel it either pastes text
from the clipboard or goes to whatever link my mouse is over in Mozilla.

Thanks,

Ken Stanley
