Starting kdm from a root login brings up the login manager window where he ca
login as user.. Then make the changes to allow his syste to start as init 5
(Xwindows), log out and reboot into Xwindows, kdm login manager.

type kdm from a root console login.
After you're logged in use the Red Hat control center to make changes that
allow you to use kdm as your login mabager.

It would be pretty slow but you might get something like FVWM to work.
Probably only get 640X480 an low color display, too.

Looks like your CDROM is not reading the files on the CD disk.
Here are some of the things I would try:
Try changing to a different CDROM drive and see if it will let you install
correctly..
Try the install on a different computer to see if it's something specific to
the Dell system board (probably not but worth checking)..
Are you using downloaded ISO's burned on a CD-RW?
If so you may try downloading from a different mirror and be sure to check the
md5sum of each ISO..

You might try the Live Update feature on CD#1:

This will update your system and *may* get the Xfree 4.3 server package..

I have had this happen with various higher level video cards, nVIDIA & Matrox
etc. - what I have done to work around the problem is to not use framebuffer
mode. Set lilo to vga=normal and you should get your term screen back.
