what we need to know is:
what graphic card and which
xfree-version (You probably know what Mandrake 9.2 brings with it)
Otherwise you have to check the log.
Since you have no GUI you´ll need an Editor like ed (see
http://www.delorie.com/gnu/docs/ed/ed_1.html for help)
type:
ed /var/log/XFree86.log
1,5n will show you the first 5 lines
where you should find your xfree-version
(or type:
g/4.[1-3].0/
which should do that)
type: q for quit
Look at http://www.xfree86.org/support.html
and choose your appropriate xfree-documentation. Then click on your
video card and check, if your chip is supported
But since I don´t know Mandrake I cannot say how to configure X then.

There are lots of Radeon Drivers that are not supported by the ati
driver. Which card do you have? You best check
http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html
There you find everything you need from 4.1 -4.3

Yes, but there is a possibility to convert it in .deb
Here is a snippet from the readme:
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/readme0328.txt
--
Some notes for debian users:

The debian Linux distribution in most cases does not come with the
ability to handle rpm packages with the rpm tool. But there is a
tool called "alien" which allows you to convert rpm files into the
debian supported *.deb package format. Please consult your debian
documentation on how to operate this tool.

A typcial debian installation commandline will look like this:

  dpkg -i .deb

In order to override complaints (which might be caused by an already
installed package "xlibmesa3" that also provides the file
libGL.so.1.2)
please use this installation command line:

  dpkg -i --force-overwrite .deb

You don´t get a message like 'no screens found' or 'screens found but none
of them have a usable configuration'?
Please send your XF86.config and XFree86.0.log. In the latter you can also
check your xfree86 version and then have a look at
http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status.html to see if your graphic card is
supported.

Database: Oracle 8.1.7 for Linux (installer works only in graphical mode)

Problem Definition:
The video card/driver is S3 Trio 64 V2 / GX is not getting configured

installation process, when Graphical mode is enabled, the system hangs. It
gives weird display and stops responding.

Is there a specific PCI video cards driver that can be used for S3 Trio 64

Thank you for your reply,

I've unsuccessfully tried the binary RPMs for RedHat (I use RedHat 9.0)
that are available from the ATI website and according to ATI; they
support the Radeon 9200 (although there is nothing on the site that
mentions the SE edition).

As far as I've heard, the SE edition is supposed to be compatible w/ the
standard 9200 (maybe it's just an identification problem?). Does anyone
have more information on this?

AW: [XFree86] Still cannot get startx/kde to start... ...

2003-09-13 Thread gebhard Dettmar
Dear Chrissy,
sorry for late answer.
please send /var/log/XFree86.0.log and version-no. of xfree86 (Woody
should provide 4.1.0, I suppose).
http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status18.html#18 says that Millenium II
is only supported by 3.3.6 and 4.3.0, but
http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/mga.4.html lists MGA2164W
Millennium II as well (don´t understand that). Anyway, 3.3.6 should be
on your debian cd-rom. So check out typing at the command line:
apt-get install xserver-mga (or mga2164w) or dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-mga
If that doesn´t work, try Vesa. But Vesa is a generic driver. You
probably can only use 256 colors, 800x600 resolution etc. For further
details please look at
http://osr5doc.ca.caldera.com:457/VidConfigG/XvidD.svga_vesa.html
Good luck and regards
Gebhard Dettmar
p.s. please send messages as plain text. I use 'MIME encoded' as spam
filter phrase. Works great!

AW: [XFree86] Samsung Samtron 56V Monitor Display Problem

2003-08-10 Thread Gebhard Dettmar
In your log stands: (EE) VGA(0): Driver can't support depth 24
You should set ist to 8 (running dpkg-reconfigure) Also you should look,
if vga is the appropriate server for your card (on xfree/support. On
http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/vga.4.html you read, that: "vga is an
XFree86 driver for generic VGA video cards. It can drive most
VGA-compatible video cards, but only makes use of the basic standard VGA
core that is common to these cards. The driver supports depths 1, 4 and
8. All relevant visual types are supported at each depth. Multi-head
configurations are supported in combination with some other drivers, but
only when the vga driver is driving the primary head."
What video card do you have? According to your card you can look in
http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/manindex4.html which server to use. If you
don´t find it, you´ll probably find it in 4.3.0 or 3.3.6

[XFree86] Xfree86_3.3.6 vs. 4.3.0 to get s3-module

2003-08-03 Thread Gebhard Dettmar
Title: Xfree86_3.3.6 vs. 4.3.0 to get s3-module

Hello everybody,

I´m a newby so forgive me if I ask stupid questions.

I have debian woody with xfree86 version 4.1.0 and S3 Trio V64+ graphic card (765 Chip) on a Pentium I Board. Unfortunately, version 4.1.0 only supports savage and virge, which means I have either to upgrade to 4.3.0 or "downgrade" to 3.3.6 to get the s3 module. Which alternative would you prefer? However, is there any difference, since I just need the s3 module? When I run the PreInstall-script of 3.3.6, what will happen if I have a newer glibc version than this script assumes? I mean "downgrading" makes me a bit suspicious.

Thanks in advance and regards

gebhard
