[XFree86] Game Locks up in XWindows, how do I get out without restarting

2003-02-07 Thread Paul Wharff
I'm farely new to the linux/unix world.  I just installed Railroad Tycoon II and occasionally it locks up, but I still have control of my mouse.  How do I Force-Quit it like on the Mac or do the 3-finger-salute like on Windows or how do I kill any application for that matter. By the way, don't tell me to use the "kill" command, I know this, however my problem is that I'm stuck in this game and I can't get back to the Xwindows file system.  Thanks for any of your imput in advance.  --Paul

Thanks for the help, but that also didn't work. Where can I find the config file to see if DontZap is enabled or not.  Any other help is appreciated.

Thank You! That has helped a lot. I will try it again
as soon as it locks again. Do you know how to get it
to simulate a lock? LOL! Anyway, thanks again. --Paul

I find it extremely helpful to run a kernel compiled with 'Magic SysRq'
enabled. That way, I can hit alt-SysRq-K (yes, all three at once) to kill
everything running on the current virtual terminal, such as the X server. I
have to do that occasionally when it won't respond to ctrl-alt-backspace or
anything. However, you do need it enabled in the kernel.

Odd... what does hitting it *twice* do? I've never heard of such a thing.
In my experience, the ctrl-alt-delete sequence, when used in X, doesn't
trigger the shutdown or reboot process as it does from virtual (text)
terminals. It's possible to set KDE (and probably GNOME et al.) to bind the
sequence to log the user out, though.

Hehe, ok.

On a related note: I just noticed that ctrl-alt-backspace no longer seems to
get me out of X. The system isn't hung or anything, and DontZap isn't set.
Did something change in recent CVS to affect it?
