[XFree86] Help turning off Mouse Zapping
Hey. I figured that this must have been a Gnome issue, but I find it on KDE and other desktops. They all seem to have active corners and edges nowadays. Whenever my mouse gets close to the corners or edges of the screen, it magically gets a mind of its own and flies off to the corner or sides. This is extremely annoying and makes it difficult to use my applications. I've tried using different mice, but it still occurs with my two bluetooth mice and ,yone PS/2 mouse. I've tried changing the mouse sensativities. Since this happens with Gnome, KDE4, LXDE, Mate, Trinity all to some degree, I think that this must be an X issue under the hood. Of course, if it's a feature, I must presume that it was in response to Gnome/KDE soliciting it. Regardless, I'm not happy dealing with a mouse with a mind of its own. I didn't have this problem on Fedora 14. But, I finally realized that F14 was effectively at end-of-life, and was forced to upgrade to Fedora 17. And, now, this behaviour is happening all the time. Can someone please tell me why this is happening and how to turn it off. Many thanks! -t ___ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@XFree86.Org http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

After installation, and running the configuration file, I rebooted and ran startx. All I get is a woven background, with a clock in the upper right corner, and three terminal windows labeled [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ . If I run init 5, I do get a GUI login screen and I am able to log in. However, when I get to the desktop, all I have is a terminal in a window, and another box labeled xsm:Default. I dont seem to be able to start Gnome. All my icons are gone. Can anyone help me get back on track? My goal is to have Gnome running in 1024 x 768 mode. Thanks, Doug
[XFree86] help with Debian and S3 Trio 64 OnBoard (please)
I have an IBM PC 300 GL 6285-66U with S3 Trio OnBoard, 4MB video memory. The chip is 86C366 (I'm sure about the 366 part, but might be crossing something on the 86C.) I've installed Mandrake and some other distributions and I typically get 16 color, 1024x768 or greater, etc. Live CD distributions also work fine, so I think the root of my problem has to do with the way Debian identifies or interoperates with my system hardware. With Debian, it always installs VESA VGA and none of the S3 servers I've tried works. (I've never tried the 365 server, and there is no 366 server listed in Debian's list.) I installed XFree86 4.5.0 successfully (after running the xinstall.sh with the option for checking my libc version). When I run xinstall -autoconfig, I see the first screen (an 'x' cursor on the gray screen), but it hangs there. When I run xinstall - configure, it comes back with the message that it can't start the X server. I realize that I'm not providing the deepest technical information, but I'm not sure what logs or other files would allow the problem to be diagnosed. Is there something about Debian that I could take into account or fix to get this working? It's hard for me to understand how the other distros grok my hardware while Debian comes up with a blank. [XFree86] Help needed on TinyX
Hi X experts, I am trying TinyX on a Xscale dev board. I cross compiled Xfree4.5 and got Xfbdev, lib and fonts and copied X11R6 to the /usr, copied X11 and fonts to /etc. I put some X programs such as xclock, twm, xterm in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, then run it by using Startx -- /usr/X11R6/bin/Xfbdev, the windows of the programs can be shown, but there isn't any texts on them, even no title on window title bar. We didn't implement any input device support to the system yet, like mouse or keyboard. Is there anyone know what I missed, is it configuration problem or because we didn't provide any input device implementation? Any advice will be appreciated very much, Steven __ Yahoo! [XFree86] Help setting up RedHat9 on a Dell C600
I ran the install last night, things went smoothly, it auto selected ATI Rage 128 Mobility as the card, and I believe this to be correct. However, when I tried to login for the first time the screen flickered and it spit up a message about not being able to start Xserver, or something similar. I've managed to find the XFree86.0.log file, and it looks like there is definatly some errors in my configuration. Things like: (II) R128: not using mode (1264*1024) width too large for virtual screen (II) R128: virtual height (0) is too small for hardware (min 128) then it has a list of stuff it 'unloads' and says screens found but none have a usable configuration. Also, I'm only getting a small box in the middle of my screen to show anything, which begins to make sense looking at the setting for virtual height, however, this prevents me fro getting all the information out of the log file, and, being a noob, I don't know if there is an option to pause the scrolling. I have bo idea where to find the configuration files mentioned, and at the moment, no way of getting the whole logfile off the laptop to post it here. Any help is appreciated.

I tried running those commands that you suggested and it could not find the apt-get install kde kdm packages. I looked into it further and found this site. http://www.kde.org/documentation/userguide/installing-debian.html What are Debs? Should I do what it says? It looks like it is an older version of kde. In other words, how do I install KDE from the linux command prompt? Thanks your help. Your friend is right in some respect - XFree86 is not a GUI or as they are generally known as in Linux - a Window Manager. KDE is a window manager but it requires XFree86 to run since KDE (like every other Window Manager) is not able to access the your computer's hardware directly. Therefore, XFree86 provides access to your display and control hardware (mouse, keyboard, video card, etc) whilst a window manager is responsible for organising how your windows / programs are displayed. Coming from a Microsoft Windows or MacOS perspective I can understand this may be a little daunting but once you get used to the concept it's not that difficult. Now, since you appear to be quite new I'd suggest you install both KDM and KDE. KDM is a graphical login manager, and can be configured to load X automatically when you boot. Once you login using KDM, it will automatically start your default window manager (which should be KDE). To do this from the linux console type the following as root or a superuser (ENTER means to hit the ENTER key): apt-get update ENTER apt-get install kde kdm ENTER Be aware, KDE is quite big so it could take some time to get the packages if your internet connection is slow. It's well worth it though since it's quite easy to use. Make sure you choose KDM as the default display manager when prompted by the configuration process. Also, a couple of tips. If you ever need to quit X and don't know how (i.e. you've just got a screen and no mouse pointer or something has gone wrong with your window manager) you can force it to quit by pressing the CONTROL, ALT, and BACKSPACE keys all together. If you started X from the command line, you'll be dropped back there or if it was started by KDM, a new copy should be started for you. Secondly, you can always get back to a console by pressing CONTROL, ALT, and F# together - where F# is either the F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, or F6 key. After you've finished with the console and if X is still running you can get back to it by pressing CONTROL, ALT and F7 together. Re: [XFree86] help me
Your XFree86 version (4.2.0) predates your video card and is too old to support it. You have two options: update to XFree86 4.4.0 or newer which comes with an XFree86-supported driver that works with that card, or use NVIDIA's binary Linux driver from NVIDIA's web site. The later is supported by NVIDIA directly and should work with your current X-server. MArk. On Sun, 19 Jun 2005, daniele wrote: I can't start the graphical server with Red Hat Linux 8.0. Usually this is a symbolic link to the *real* device, which in the case of a PS/2 mouse would normally be /dev/psaux (although, if it's a usb mouse it could be /dev/input/mice or /dev/input/mouse0). Possible actions to take: 1) Check to see if the /dev/mouse device is actually there. If not, and you *know* what the *real* device name is, then make the link yourself. 2) Change the X config file to use the *real* device name. I have the notebook IBM ThinkPad/R40 and install Linux RH 7.3 with the kernel 2.4.20. My the problem is that is not start Xserver, when its monitor is IBM ThinkPad 1024x768 TFT LCD. Know you help me? I attach the err.log file. I think I see the problem in the following lines from your log file: (--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 75 00] rev 0, Mem @ 0xe000/27, 0xc010/16, I/O @ 0x3000/8 (II) I810: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810, i810-dc100, i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM/855GM, 865G (II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0 (EE) No devices detected. I think what is happening is you configured XFree86 to use an Intel driver when you needed to configure it to use the radeon driver. If you edit the Driver line under the Device section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config and make it look something like: Section Device ...[Other stuff here]... Driver radeon ...[Other stuff here]... EndSection you may have more luck. Another option is to run '/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure' as root and follow the prompts. This will attempt to automatically create a working configuration for you. Good luck! -- -Andy ___ XFree86 mailing list XFree86@XFree86.Org http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] HELP: muti cursors in X Window
Hi friends. I am doing a project about X Window. In this project, I try to create two independent cursors which controlled by two mice in one monitor. Currently, I have used ``X Input Extension'' (libXi) to receive event from the second mouse. I have removed ``AlwaysCore'' option from XF86Config file at the second mouse section. From that the second mouse can't change the position of the cursor (only the first mouse can), however, the event from the second mouse can detect and distinguish from the core event (from the first mouse) i.e. the event from the second mouse is ``extension event''. But when I read parameters from that second mouse event, ... T_T, the position variables is the same as the cursor which controlled by the first mouse ... so sad Could you give me suggestions? How could I create two independent cursors controlled by two mice? Currently I am thinking about read/write second mouse directly from /dev/input/mice (something). Anyway, I think it's better to do it in X level But how? Thank you -- __ Check out the latest SMS services @ http://www.linuxmail.org This allows you to send and receive SMS through your mailbox. The X-Window system doesn't support more than one cursor. You can create a sprite with shaped windows that looks like a cursor and move it around with a special program that tracks movement of the second mouse and moves the shaped window around, but you'll never be able to do cursor-like things with it like getting cursor-related events. [XFree86] help - new RH9 install - X locking up
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me because I'm about to lose my mind. I just bit the bulet and scrapped Windows completely, and installed a new drive and installed Red Hat 9. I'm slowly forcing myself to use Linux, hopefully for good. But I'm mgetting VERY discouraged with the video. I'm running on a P4-1.7ghz with 256mb of ram. All is working well except my X session keeps either 1) freezing so I have to hit CTRL-ALT-BKSPC to restart the X session, or 2) the X session locks hard so I have to reset the PC. Looking in Google on this, it seems everyone in the world who's posted about this has an ATI card. And you guessed it, so do I. I have the Radeon 9600 Pro. I tried using the ATI driver and was having the same troubles. So now I've uninstalled it and am just using the VESA driver, 1024x768, 256 color as a test. It's STILL locking up every few minutes! When checking with ATI on this, they say to contact xfree86. Here's the tail of my XFree86 log. The main things I see as being a problem are VBESetVBEMode failed and the X message about being rejected from local host. I'm basically a newbie when it comes to this. Can anyone give me some direction? Thanks! Re: [XFree86] Help
I think first off you want to be using the native Matrox driver instead of the generic Vesa driver like you are doing currently. In the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, replace Driver vesa with Driver mga. If problems persist, try using the xtt font module instead of freetype. That is, in the XF86Config file replace Load freetype with Load xtt. Mark. On Wed, 25 Aug 2004, [iso-8859-1] Carlos Pineda wrote: I am sorry, i thought that i had send you the log file. [XFree86] help: install X11 as a regular user
Finally, I was able to successfully compile the X11 (the latest developer version from website). But has the following problem when make install: As a regular user with no root previllege on a RH Advanced server, I compiled x11 with projectroot = app in my home directory. However, when make install, it trys to create a softlink of a library to /usr/local/x11, which I don't have write permission. I am asking which place in .def I should suppress this automation. Thanks very much. __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! [XFree86] Help configuring for use with TV
I've been searching around the internet for a few days now and just can't seem to find the information I'm looking for, so I'm hoping someone here on the list would be kind enough to help out. I have a system using an i815 chipset and it is connected to a ADS TV Elite XGA scan convertor that is in turn connected to a 36 Toshiba television (not HD). If I configure X for a Generic 640x480 monitor and set the resolution to 640x480, everything seems to work just fine. There is a little expected overscan, but it is useable. What I'd like to do is use 800x600 resolution, but when I configure for a Generic 800x600 monitor and set the resolution to 800x600, the displayed video is much wider and taller than my video screen. BTW - I really expected the scan convertor to just work to make either resolution fit properly on the TV. Playing around with a mode line, I can get the width within the actual screen size, but I can not get the height within the actual screen size. Do I need to use interlace mode? If so, does the i815 chipset and/or X driver support interlace mode? Would it be better (easier) for me to trash the scan convertor and i815 in favor of a video card with a built in TV-OUT and if so, any recommendations? Could someone supply a modeline for the i815, that will get 800x600 displayed properly on a standard NTSC television? Thanks in advance for any information/help anyone can offer. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

Actually: that's exactly the problem: X can't find your config file, and doesn't seem to be doing too well getting things running without one. Check your distribution to see if it has a helpful X configuration tool, and create a configuration. Re: [XFree86] Re: Cannot start XFree86, Help!!!
See it running the following helps: # X -configure Some instructions are presented after it does that. If that works, put the resulting file in /etc/X11/XF86Config be sure to rename it from whatever X -configure makes (usually XF86Config.new) to just XF86Config.
