There seems to be a growing number of folks with these issues, which I've kinda been expecting. Its not likely folks with these older S3 boards are going to upgrade XFree86 very fast, but I expect the numbers to grow as the upgrade cycle progresses... Which ramdac does your board use? TI had several. I'm kinda annoyed about the S3 968 with an IBM RGB 526 not being supported, as XFree86 3.3.6 reports a 526 as a 524 during startup, which *is* supported by 4.x. What does it take to get programming docs for all these chips? IBM would provide docs for their DACs if they still had them (I've been in touch with them)... -Toth ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

I don't want to go back to 3.3.6 ... there must be another solution. I wondered if you ever found a solution ( exept: buy an other card .. ) ? I guess support for your ramdac isn't included in 4.x. -Toth ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86 It maybe an old card (expensive too at the time), but it still works fine for me ( this problem aside then ). Looks like you made some progress, Your "no devices found" error went away. Looks like you need to work on screen settings next. According to the log file in this mail your Ramdac probe failed. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you with that. Also I didn't see any part of your log file where X tries all of the different modes specified in your config file. That may be significant. > (--) Chipset 968 found > (--) s3(0): Cannot determine IBM RAMDAC type, aborting > (EE) s3(0): Ramdac probe failed > (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. > > Fatal server error: > no screens found > -Original Message- > From: Emilio Bustos [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Sunday, June 22, 2003 8:12 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: [XFree86] Help me please!! ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

RE: [XFree86] help me please!
Several people have helped you with this already. Your font server isn't running (XFS)--look at your log file. The stuff that you mention in your email is not material at this time. First, fix the error in the log file. Example: Add the following lines to the Section "Files" in the XF86Config file: FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" Or you can fix your font server's problems. You will have to do that on your own though. As a start you could try to su to root and type "service xfs restart" while X is not running. There is a lot of documentation on Red Hat's site about this, try searching. Here is a start. http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ref-guide/s1-x-fonts.h tml Good Luck, cyn > -Original Message- > From: xscui [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: Saturday, June 21, 2003 10:15 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: [XFree86] help me please! ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

Hi,xfree86, I am a Chinese student, and I am a beginner of Linux.I used to use RedHat Linux 8.0,but I have a problem now,I beg your help,Thank you every much ! My trouble is that I can't login normally, but I can login text mode. The system will tell me some message as "Server Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/gdm but this does not exist. Please correct gdm configuration /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and restart gdm".The message will appear in every few seconds. I noticed that when the system startup, something have wrong. One looks as this: "Start Sm-client : can not chdir(/var/spool/clientmqueuel):Permission denied Program mode requires special privileges,e.g.,root or TrustedUser.[FAILED]" I also check the files by myself,I opened /var/gdm (/var/gdm looks like a directory, but I can "vi /var/gdm").The content is as below (6 lines): "Press ? for keyboard shortcuts "Sorted by name (.bak,~,.o,.h,.info,.swp,.obj at end of list) "=/var/gdm/ ./ fonts.cache-1 :0.Xservers I think there is a file called :0.Xservers in the directory /var/gdm/ ,and the file maybe as below(1 line): :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 At first I look for answer in internet by google,I have tried changing the attribute of /var/gdm ,but it failed still. later ,I want to use startx to get into GUI ,I see some information about your mail ,so I write to you to beg your help. Please help me ,I also give you some files copy from my computer.
