Intel i845 graphics are not supported in XFree86 4.2.x, and thus
not supported in Red Hat Linux 8.0. You need XFree86 4.3.0,
which ships with Red Hat Linux 9, in order to have working
support for Intel i845.

Hi Mike,
I am a Linux newbie, but I have been to the XFree86.org and they have a lot
of information. Have you tried reading some of the documetation they have.
It is online and free. If Red Hat won't work try Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 It's
FREE!
You misunderstand... I am not the one having the problem, the
person I was responding to was having the problem. Their problem
was as I said, due to XFree86 4.2.x not supporting this video
hardware. I maintain XFree86 in Red Hat Linux, and was merely
indicating to them that their video hardware is unsupported, and
what OS release and XFree86 release is required in order for them
to get their video hardware working.
Red Hat Linux 9 works fine with Intel i845 video hardware,
because Red Hat Linux 9 comes with XFree86 4.3.0 which supports
i845.
Debian 3.0 does not come with XFree86 4.3.0 and does not to my
knowledge support i845 at all. In order to get i845 working in
Debian, you have to install Daniel Stone's unofficial 4.3.0 deb
packages, and upgrade your kernel to have the required 4.3.0 DRM
support for the Intel i845.
Red Hat Linux is also free.
