It is possible, but the correct command is startkde.

PS The reason why command did not work is that startx starts Xserver -
i.e. the driver for the hardware you have. But ssh connection does not
present any real hardware - only a channel for communication with whatever
Xserver you are running your terminal emulator on.

No, it is incomplete. Please follow the instructions at the bottom of the
error message.

Besides, this is probably a case of you misconfiguring your machine or
(possibly but I doubt it) a Red Hat bug.

It /might/ be an XFree86 bug but until you actually provide the log you
were asked to send AND tell us how to got to the current state, we'll
never know.

Possible you didn't configure your X.
Try configuring with xf86cfg -textmode. Visit ALL seven menus.
If that doesn't help, you could even try configuring with xf86config.

Hello,
You are more likely to get help if you also include a description of
what's wrong. And what distro and version of Linux and Xfree you are using
just for clarity's sake. Maybe what kind of hardware too. :) (For example,
your video card could be considered germane.)

Everything was looking good (to me at least) until here. Maybe you clock
settings. Or your sync settings. Perhaps these are being read automatically
and that's not working properly.

I've seen this in quite a few of these messages in Red Hat XFree logs (might
even be specific to Nvidia drivers), there -may- be a FAQ about it on the
XFree86 website. (http://www.xfree86.org/support.html) Unfortunately I don't
know what the error message signifies, but it's a good place to start
looking. ("could not open default font 'fixed'", maybe add a comma and "Red
Hat 8.0" or whatever your version is.) You can use Google to search the
site, just go to the Advanced Search Options and set the Domain Option (in
the first block of options towards the bottom) to only search
http://www.xfree86.org/.

Also, if you're not already subscribed to the Xfree mailing list you may
want to as that is where most of the help actually takes place.

Good luck,
.cyn.

How are we supposed to help you if you don't give us any information?

For a start, what OS is this? What cpu? What distribution?
What do the logs say? What are the permissions on /dev/io?
What version of X do you have?

  We aren't physic.

If this is a bsd machine, then you have your security settings too high.
If not, then perhaps your permissions are wrong. I can't tell with

I don't know about RH8, but looking at the log file...

Your monitor specs are entered incorrectly in your XF86Config
file. According to your monitor's EDID you should have:

VertRefresh 50 - 160

  And I'm guessing HorizSync should be about 30 - 100, but that's
only guessing. Your monitor manual will tell you for sure.

Your XF86Config file says to use a font server, yet one doesn't
appear to be running. Run xfs or put a font path in the Section "Files"
of the XF86Config. eg.

   FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
   FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"

If You run Linux inside vmware under unknow OS, then use "vmware" video
driver for xf86.
I run winnt under vmware and vmware under xf86 and xf86 under Linux.
So I install special video drivers for winnt.

  /lib/libGLcore.so.1 ?

Those aren't supposed to be in /lib. OpenGL libraries belong
in /usr/lib. Sounds like different libGLcore located in /lib
are getting used instead of the correct ones in /usr/lib.

It's not the monitor. It's the chip. I've been told repeatedly
that there is no NVIDIA chip with that device ID.

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) NVidia unknown chipset (0x002a) rev 21, Mem @

In the Section "Device" of the XF86Config file, add the line

ChipID 0x0028

and it will treat it like a TNT2.

Sounds like the server doesn't have the correct permissions.
I assume it works if you run as root? If so, this is probably
not the *correct* solution, but it should work. Do the following
as root.

   chmod +s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86

If it didn't work as root, don't bother, that's not the problem.

none have a usable configuration" ,and the next line is "Fatal server error,
no screens found".
Since the X Windows can not start,so I can almost do nothing .Would you kind
enough to help me,tell me what should I do because I am so puzzle!
Some detail of my PC:
PC type: IBM NetVista M42
Monitor: IBM 9512 T541 TFT Monitor
Display Card: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
Display Memory: 64M

*The file /var/log/XFree86.o.log is in attachment.

Hmm.

I'm tempted to say "start xfs", but I don't see any warnings about being
unable to use/stat font path element "unix/:7100", so unless I'm missing
something xfs is running. Ack, I'm confused! Maybe Red Hat removed the
warning...?

Make sure xfs is running. Then see if you have the same problem.

Did you try running whatever configuration tool for X your distribution
comes with? You need to specify in at least one Section a Screen and
then define what modes that screen supports in another section. This
will all be created for you by a tool that comes with your distribution.

The /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file would be informative too.

This is an important message above: you are about 18 months out of date
with the version of XFree86 that you're trying to run and shouldn't
report a problem until you've upgraded to XFree86-4.3.X

However it looks as though you're running a kernel that came from
Mandrake? I don't know anything about the LTSP, but if it's based on
Mandrake (I thought Red Hat though? in which case XConfigurator
would be the tool) then perhaps XDrakconf or some other tool is what you
should run to create a valid /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

You don't need the "v4l" module. It looks like that's not your
problem anyhow. You might want to look into upgrading your XFree86
version (4.3 is the newest). Yours is 3 years old and it's hard
to remember what is and isn't supposed to work with a server
that old.

RE: [XFree86] Help

2003-08-18 Thread Alexander Stohr
doing some research with http://yourvote.com/pci once again,

XFree86 Version 4.0.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 16 March 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

totally outdated and unsupported!!!
you should upgrade to a newer version of XFree86 - really.

(II) PCI: PCI scan (all values are in hex)
(II) PCI: 00:00:0: chip 10de,01a4 card , rev b2 class 06,00,00 hdr
80
(II) PCI: 00:00:1: chip 10de,01ac card 10de,0c11 rev b2 class 05,00,00 hdr
80

you are running an nForce 1 based system.
you must ensure to have latest patches for your kernel applied
if you want to run hardware accellerated OpenGL without crashing
your system.

(II) PCI: 02:00:0: chip 10de,01a0 card 10de,0c11 rev b1 class 03,00,00 hdr
00

you are having the GeForce2 integrated grafics chipset.
i cant see anything else on PCI bus that has a grafics ID.
you might be forced to get either latest DRI development
beta drivers (for X4.3.0) or possibly try something from
your grafics hardware vendor's download area.

(EE) VGA(0): Given depth (16) is not supported by this driver.
(II) UnloadModule: "vga"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

i am not finally sure - possibly only 4bpp and lower is
supported by vga drivers. at least i am sure VGA does not
offer 16 bpp, but maybe only 8bpp for 320x200 resolution.

you might have better success trying the VESA drivers.

Re: [XFree86] Help

2003-09-03 Thread Rob
I copied all the binaries and subdirectories from XF86.org release 4.3 to a
cd (took about 2 hours).

copied Xinstall.sh (from the common subdirectory) to a temporary directory
under root (/root/jrmtemp).

ran: sh Xinstall.sh -check from that temporary directory.

Got an error message saying I needed "extract" or "extract.exe" in the same
directory.

found "extract" in one of the "linux-ix86-glibc2x" subdirectories (I think
it was 23, I see now that "extract" is a different size in each of the
subdirectories.)

reran: sh Xinstall.sh -check

got the a.out message, called for help.

Thanks!

If this happened while you were doing something that uses
TrueType fonts (like web browsing), you might want to try
replacing Load "freetype" with Load "xtt" in the XF86Config
file. There are some known fatal conditions in the Freetype

Hi,

How did you configure your XF86Config file?

use

# XFree86 -configure

and try that configuration file, from what I can see there are no screens
configured, but I could be wrong.

Attaching your XF86Config file would be of help to get the problem resolved.

Your best bet is to download the Nvidia driver for linux and follow
their instructions in their documentation exactly. I am using the same
card and it runs wonderfully.

I have provided a link to a copy of my config file. I'm sure between
that and the Nvidia docs you can get it going.

Remove the Option "UseFBDev" from your XF86Config file.
I think it is an error that Debian is trying to use it at all.

Also, that card probably will not work properly with
XFree86 4.2.x. It wasn't officially supported until XFree86 4.3.

I had the same problem with the same card on an i686 with 2.4.18 kernel
(Debian 3)
Upgraded to XFree86 4.3 from XFree86.org which recognises the card.
Works well now apart dpkg -- configure /reconfigure failing on the the link

You can do it with LiLO or GRUB. You need 4 partitions for it work fine.

1st partition around 100 Mb (boot partition) ext2, ext3
2nd partition WinXP or Linux partition, select yourself :) (I put windows partition first, because the rest of the space avaiable is for Linux) around 4 Gb... (4 games :P)
3rd Linux partition, (or WinXP) with the rest of space.
4rt partition SWAP space, almost (RAM * 1.5)

Your first problem appears to be that the version of XFree86 included with
winlinux2003 is too old to know about your nVidia video card. You should be
using XFree86 4.3.0 or possibly try a (quite stable) 4.4.0 pre-release.

Next it appears these files are not available in your install. While you don't
actually need these extensions, it indicates that you likely have other problems
with your system. You may be able to reinstall the XFree86 packages (rpm, .deb,
whatever) that included them.

You need to enable the X Font Server (xfs) on bootup as well. You can edit what
services are started using '/usr/sbin/ntsysv' as root. You can manually start
xfs using '/sbin/service xfs start'.

I think first off you want to be using the native Matrox driver
instead of the generic Vesa driver like you are doing currently.
In the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, replace Driver "vesa" with
Driver "mga".

If problems persist, try using the xtt font module instead
of freetype. That is, in the XF86Config file replace Load "freetype"
with Load "xtt".

At least on mine, the 1:0:1 is not a real device, but represents the second
head on my radeon card. I read somewhere that this is for Windows for some
reason.

Post your XF86Config file and something more than "help me" and maybe I can
actually figure something out. More likely than not, someone smarter on this

X is complaining that it can't find the device /dev/mouse. Does this exist?
Usually this is a symbolic link to the *real* device, which in the case of a
PS/2 mouse would normally be /dev/psaux (although, if it's a usb mouse it could
be /dev/input/mice or /dev/input/mouse0).

Possible actions to take:
1) Check to see if the /dev/mouse device is actually there. If not, and you
*know* what the *real* device name is, then make the link yourself.
2) Change the X config file to use the *real* device name.

There are a lot of comments in your log file that say it's using the "built-in"
configuration. This is probably not a good idea.
If when you boot you are dropped straight to a text-based login prompt, then
try the following:
+ Login as root
+ Run one of the following programmes:
  - xf86cfg
  - xf86config
+ Make sure you answer all questions as best you can. I can't remember which,
but one of those programmes gives you a low-res GUI which you can use to
configure your system. It takes a little getting used-to.
+ Try restarting your X system (as root, try typing "startx" (obviously without
the " marks)).

thats a problem with the XFree86 module loader
in combination with a more recent gnuc compiler.

you might want to use newer sources
or add to your host.def the additional compiler
switch of "--no-merge-constants" in order to
disable the introduction of those dangling symbols.

Looks like you've compiled a rather old version of XFree86 with a
rather new version of gcc. My guess is you've compiled XFree86
4.1.0 with gcc 3.0 or newer. New versions of gcc, in particular
gcc 2.96rh, and gcc 3.0 and higher contain an optimization called
merge-constants, which is enabled by default.

The X server ELF module loader does not like the new ELF sections
that this optimization puts in the modules, and causes it to
explode with the errors you see above. To work around this
issue, the X modules must be compiled with -fno-merge-constants.
Doing this in XFree86 4.1.0 is a bit of an ugly hack, so I
wouldn't recommend it. XFree86 4.2.0 and later will autodetect
the version of gcc during build time and will make sure the
modules are built correctly without extra effort.

Hope this helps.

The people at [EMAIL PROTECTED] need just a _little_ more information
about your setup.

For instance, what ATI card are you using? If it's a Radeon, which one?
9000? 7500? 8500? VE? Please be sure to give the exact model number.

Then, which XFree86 server version are you using? This can be tricky to
tell most times, but it's safe to assume that it's one of the 4.X
servers. It might be easier to tell us if you're using a particular
distribution and version of that distribution.

For instance, you might say that you are having trouble getting your ATI
Radeon 9000 to work on Redhat 8.0 (I pulled this straight out of the
air.) From that, they would know what card you are using, and they could
even make a good guess as to what server you're using. Even then, they
might need to know exactly what problems you're having (problems related
to 2-D? 3-D?), but you would have given them more to work with so that
they could possibly tell you right away something like "Oh, yeah, we're
still working on that. It doesn't work at all right now."

Anyway, here's hoping for better bug reports in the future!

In your log I found you are using 4.1.0, it's quite old release and doesn't
support new ATI cards. Solution: update XFree86.

Better yet, you're running under VMWare, so use the vmware driver.

You haven't given us much to go on. Which distro are you installing? If
you're new to linux, most people elect to try redhat. Are you using the
latest redhat version (I think it's 9.1 or something like that)? Are you
using the latest XFree86 (4.3.0)? You need to be more specific about your
hardware and ask specific questions (specific as in, solving specific
problems, but also XFree86 specific).

Re: [XFree86] Help Required.

2003-11-08 Thread Greg Davey

Use NVIDIA's driver, while not being open source(bad), it does provide a much higher frame rate than the xfree driver(good).  The driver is available on NVIDIA's website along with fairly simple install instructions.  Remeber to download both the kernel module(NVIDIA_kernel) and the xfree86 glx module(NVIDIA_GLX).  It should work with your current xfree install.

Remeber this is only an alternative to upgrading xfree and using the newer nv driver.  Maybe someday nvidia will release the source for the drivers.

Reality is but a brief respite between my fantasies.

Re: [XFree86] Help NVIDIA!!

2003-12-01 Thread Mark Vojkovich
If you remove NVIDIA's drivers the
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a from Mesa will get used
(instead of the libglx.so of NVIDIA). This is all in software,
however, and very slow.

NVIDIA's binary drivers should have worked, however. I think
with some kernels you need to pass "nopentium" and "noapic" options
to the kernel. And of course, you'd want to be using the latest
(4496) drivers.

You've got a number of issues here:

You're using an old version of XFree (4.0.3), which does not support your ATI
chipset

> (II) VGA: Generic VGA driver (version 4.0) for chipsets: generic

so you've decided to use the generic VGA driver

which does not support 16 bit color mode.

My suggestion is to upgrade your linux distribution to something more recent,
and use the proper driver (probably the radeon).

I think I see the problem in the following lines from your log file:

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW
[Radeon Mobility 75
00] rev 0, Mem @ 0xe000/27, 0xc010/16, I/O @ 0x3000/8

(II) I810: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810, i810-dc100,
i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM/855GM, 865G
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
 (EE) No devices detected.

I think what is happening is you configured XFree86 to use an Intel
driver when you needed to configure it to use the radeon driver. If
you edit the Driver line under the Device section of your
/etc/X11/XF86Config and make it look something like:

 Section "Device"
  ...[Other stuff here]...
  Driver "radeon"
  ...[Other stuff here]...
 EndSection

you may have more luck.

Another option is to run '/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure' as root
and follow the prompts. This will attempt to automatically create a
working configuration for you.

Good luck!

In the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, replace Driver "vga" with
Driver "sis". You are currently using the basic vga (ie. 640x480
in 16 colors) driver rather than the native SiS driver.

XFree86 is failing to guess what your mouse device is. 4.5.0 does a better
job of this. Alternatively you can give it a hint by creating a symbolic
link from the real device to /dev/mouse.

Re: [XFree86] help me

2005-06-20 Thread Mark Vojkovich
Your XFree86 version (4.2.0) predates your video card and is
too old to support it. You have two options: update to XFree86
4.4.0 or newer which comes with an XFree86-supported driver that
works with that card, or use NVIDIA's binary Linux driver from NVIDIA's
web site. The later is supported by NVIDIA directly and should
work with your current X-server.

Re: [XFree86] Help Installing

2005-09-15 Thread Lance Duivenbode

Hi Tad,

Good to hear you got X running. Your friend is right in some respect -
XFree86 is not a GUI or as they are generally known as in Linux - a
Window Manager. KDE is a window manager but it requires XFree86 to run
since KDE (like every other Window Manager) is not able to access the
your computer's hardware directly. Therefore, XFree86 provides access to
your display and control hardware (mouse, keyboard, video card, etc)
whilst a window manager is responsible for organising how your windows /
programs are displayed.

Coming from a Microsoft Windows or MacOS perspective I can understand
this may be a little daunting but once you get used to the concept it's
not that difficult.

Now, since you appear to be quite new I'd suggest you install both KDM
and KDE. KDM is a graphical login manager, and can be configured to load
X automatically when you boot. Once you login using KDM, it will
automatically start your default window manager (which should be KDE).

To do this from the linux console type the following as root or a
superuser ( means to hit the ENTER key):

   apt-get update
   apt-get install kde kdm

Be aware, KDE is quite big so it could take some time to get the
packages if your internet connection is slow. It's well worth it though
since it's quite easy to use. Make sure you choose KDM as the default
display manager when prompted by the configuration process.

Also, a couple of tips. If you ever need to quit X and don't know how
(i.e. you've just got a screen and no mouse pointer or something has
gone wrong with your window manager) you can force it to quit by
pressing the CONTROL, ALT, and BACKSPACE keys all together. If you
started X from the command line, you'll be dropped back there or if it
was started by KDM, a new copy should be started for you. Secondly, you
can always get back to a console by pressing CONTROL, ALT, and
together - where is either the F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, or F6 key.
After you've finished with the console and if X is still running you can
get back to it by pressing CONTROL, ALT and F7 together.

Anyway, I hope that helps you a little, feel free to repost if you need
more help.

Cheers,
Lance

RE: [XFree86] Help Installing

2005-09-17 Thread Tad Dixon
I tried running those commands that you suggested and it could not find the
apt-get install kde kdm packages. I looked into it further and found this
site. http://www.kde.org/documentation/userguide/installing-debian.html What
are Debs? Should I do what it says? It looks like it is an older version of
kde. In other words, how do I install KDE from the linux command prompt?
Thanks your help.

Subject: Re: [XFree86] Help Installing

Anyway, I hope that helps you a little, feel free to repost if you need
more help.

Cheers,
Lance

We would need to see the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file the attempt to run the
server created. It should help pinpoint the problem.

Your Motherboard has the Intel 845 chipset, and XF86 (4.2.0) is identifying
it as Intel 815, and is failing to find a device... I guess the 845 is not
supported in such an old version of XF86...

Have yoou tried any of the newer (4.2.99.x) versions of XF86?

Yes, you need a later version of XF86 ...

http://www.mail-archive.com/xfree86@xfree86.org/msg00290.html

Or you could try it with the X Vesa drivers, but you would be limited in
your screen resolution

Try 4.2.99.4

(available from

 ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/snapshots/4.2.99.4/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc22/

)
