Nope. Looks just like mine. Did you replace /usr/sbin/sendmail with the
sendmail script and exe from the XMail package? For some reason if the
sendmail thread fails logging gets screwed up.

You have another mail process running, such as sendmail or postfix. You need
to disable these so they don't start up at boot time, kill the currently
running process (or reboot), then try the XMail commands again.

You can't see debug output unless you run XMail from the command line. Stop
XMail and run these commands from the command line (as root):

export MAIL_ROOT=/var/MailRoot
 /var/MailRoot/bin/XMail -Md -Pl -Sl -Fl -Cl -Ll

You should see debug info printed to the screen and the log files should work
normally. If it still doesn't work, show us the screen output. If this works
OK, then the problem is probably in your startup script.

[xmail] Re: XMail Log Help

2004-11-04 Thread hamid
Davide:

Thanks for your reply. Here are answers to your questions:

1) XMail IS running. It transfers mail for several domains with no problem
other than, I can't track suspicious messages due to lack of logging.
2) as per 1 above, XMail is running fine. I am using message sends from
Outlook client to external address to test. After message transmittal there
are no new SMTP* and SMAIL* files generated.
3) XMail responds to telnet to ports 110 and 25.

Another symptom is that the xmail startup script is not setting up the
environment properly for some reason. I have to setup the environment
variables manually every time before starting xmail after stopping it.
Otherwise, it hangs and does not respond to client requests.

Let me know if you need additional information. Any suggestions/ideas
appreciated.

Thanks,
Hamid.

Jeff:

Thanks for your reply. XMail $MAIL_ROOT/logs has permissions set to:

"drwxrwxrwx2 root root32768 Nov  4 07:32 . "

and it runs as root anyway, so directory permissions should not be an issue.
When command line

XMAIL_CMD_LINE="-Md -Pl -Sl -Mr 24"

is used in start script, it still does not write any logs. This (verbose
logging with -Md) never worked before anyway, but POP, SMTP and SMAIL
logging did.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Hamid.

A few questions:

1) Is XMail running?

   # ps aux | grep XMail | grep -v grep
   # netstat -t -n -a -p

2) Is XMail working and how you test it?

3) What do you get when telnet'ing to ports 25 and 110?

I don't believe it writes an empty file but it should log activity immediately
AFAIK. Does XMail write to the logs when you run it in debug mode? Log

With this:

XMAIL_CMD_LINE="-Sl -Ql -Mr 24"

in your startup script, XMail must generate logs inside $MAIL_ROOT/logs
(assuming it is actually running).

[xmail] Re: XMail Log Help

2004-11-03 Thread hamid
Thanks for your replies. I am looking in /var/MailRoot/logs for new log
files (it used to generate them before). Yes, they are lowercase Ls. IMAP
would definitely be enough motivation to upgrade.

Cheers,
Hamid.

LOL, heck, I'm still running 1.7 on the xMail server that I help
administer. 1.8 kept dying so I never went up from there :)

I'm waiting for the long-awaited IMAP version (which I know is in
production, I'm not trying to push it).

Thanks Davide for all of your hard work!

Where are you looking for logs?

PS: 1.8 is kinda old.

[xmail] Re: XMail Log Help

2004-11-03 Thread Dale Qualls
Without grabbing and checking the manual for switches, those "l"'s are
lowercase "L"'s, right?
>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/2/2004 11:51:53 PM >>>
Can anyone suggest any ideas to determine why XMail is not writing any
log files? The xmail command line, as pasted from xmail executable in
/etc/rc.d/init.d, is:
XMAIL_CMD_LINE="-Sl -Ql -Mr 24"

The XMail-related environment variables are pasted below:

MAIL=/var/spool/mail/root
MAILCHECK=60
MAIL_CMD_LINE=
MAIL_ROOT=/var/MailRoot
OSTYPE=linux-gnu
PATH=/var/MailRoot/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin
SHELL=/bin/bash
XMAIL_ROOT=/var/MailRoot

The OS is Linux version 2.4.7-10 (Red Hat 7.2) running XMail 1.8.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Hamid.
