Re: Slow 2D with radeon KMS

Now with :
- xserver 1.7.4
- 2.6.33rc7 with KMS
- libdrm, mesa, xf86-video-ati from git
2D and 3D are back OK on an R700 (HD4650 mobility (M98))

However I see 2 performance issues :
- glxgears tops at 1450fps (compared to ~2500fps without KMS)
- GL vsync is broken, ie visual tearing especially at playing large videos
(XV or OGL) with Kwin compositing enabled

Any thoughts on this ?

glxgears is not a 3D performance benchmark. DRI2 is doing tear free
correct rendering in composited environment which does cost extra
copy. Of course it could be better optimized but optimization is low
priority for r600 driver.

 - GL vsync is broken, ie visual tearing especially at playing large videos

vsync was broken when intel merged the new vsync code. So you should
use mesa from time before the merge (about a week ago)

You say that you will participate in the bi-weekly meetings on IRC

your contributions to X and why should I take you seriously?

Full transparency into exactly what all the board members know still
wouldn't tell you much more than what you already know.

It will at least give us an idea as to why we are voting at all.

Currently we have absolutely nothing to go by.

I have experience with participating in effective meetings with a
time-zone constrained committees going back to the early nineties,
when I was a founding member of an on-line game exploring the dynamics
of bylaws. Which still exists. The written medium is perfectly fine
for holding meetings -- it worked for the founding fathers of the USA
two hundred and change years ago, with transparency still available in
the form of things like The Federalist Papers (which I haven't read,
but I would like to find the time, I think.)

So as a campaign promise, I, as a board member, will attempt to shift
the meetings into a less synchronous mode. Given a wiki on which all
parties may describe their positions, real progress can be made with
far less procedural infighting than you get with a synchronous meeting
with the awful bottleneck of Who Has The Floor.

That game had participants in Australia, the USA, and Europe, both
eastern and western. My big takeaway was, you don't want to get in a
position opposed to Norwegians in December in a play-by-e-mail game,
 as you will lose.

Xephyr + wacom

2010-02-12 Thread Yan Seiner
Anyone know how I'd go about setting up Xephyr with a wacom tablet?

I have a tablet that's recognized by the system, I have a pretty recent
wacom driver, and I can't figure out how to get Xephyr to do anything with
it.

I run dual-head, and I need the wacom tablet attached to one head.

I'm also having an issue with Xephyr logging. I get no logs at all
(Xorg.N.log is never created).

Of course, this is on the machine that I need wacom support. The other
machine that runs the same setup logs Xephyr stuff just fine.

So, who are you, why do you want to run for the board, what have been

 Matt Turner

I am an outsider to X development -- sure, I've been using an X
display for twenty years; I've made a couple of unrealistic wish-list
suggestions concerning a potential protocol extension to allow moving
a client from one server to another, inspired by frustration at not
being able to somehow take a window with a log tail in it with me when
I left the over-air-conditioned inner sanctum and went out into the
main lab at the U (my then employer) one summer afternoon in 1998.

I recently went through a business school curriculum and I would like
to share the benefits of that experience in a productive way.

It seems that the X bylaws allow for outsider participation, perhaps
to provide oversight to mitigate developer-driven coolitis (not as bad
a malady as featuritis, but still suboptimal), and that has attracted
me. That and the fact that you do Borda counting.

Aside from the hopefully redundant role of focus maintainer, I have to
offer the fact that I am working on tools for distributed committees
(yeah, who isn't any more, you might say. But still, I am.) and may
offer this organization the use of them as they develop. Although on
reflection that hat might be better worn after the development,
offering the org the use of an in-place asynchronous meeting platform
rather than attempting to leverage an election win into requirements
gathering.

Aside from hoping that any Tools For Organzations I bring will be
useful, and hoping that my sense of focus will be helpful, I also
bring a desire to see a general world-wide bounty clearinghouse set up
for adding features to open-source projects. I think that X might be a
good place to start by establishing a general-purpose bounty system
for X development projects that do not carry either sufficient
intrinsic amusement value to attract volunteer developers or
sufficient business value to trigger deployment of professionals.
That's not general purpose, that's special purpose, but by creating a
bounty system with a more general vision, the system may spill over
into other realms, much as Orkut is now widely used in South America
and India, surprising those who launched it originally.
