For gaming a mid-range card like the suggested is a good choice IMHO,
tho' I'm no longer carefully following the field. If you do not intend
to play very recent demanding games on high settings even a low-end card
(or chipset-based GPU) should be sufficient - with the huge advantage
that they don't need active cooling.
One note of caution, using a HD5xxx or higher chip does currently
require -git stuff to get even Compiz afaik, unless you're willing to
(temporarily) use fglrx. HD4xxx and lower (e.g. I have a chipset-HD3xxx)
work great with released kernels and free drivers, tho I don't know if
sid contains sufficiently recent versions.

I'm not aware of any widespread issue, and although I haven't got a
great deal of interest in the proprietary drivers I'm sure I would've
heard about it. As for verifying.. well, that's one of the key
criticisms of these illegal drivers. Since they are loaded into kernel
space they can do _whatever_ _they_ _want_ with your system - that's the
nature of kernel code. And since they're binary its not feasible to
figure out what exactly they're up to.

Your best bet is to either turn of that driver and use nv or nouveau
(maybe nouveau already satisfies your requirements, and unlike nvidia
it's actually supportable) for comparison, or to contact nvidia support.
Tho I wouldn't hold my breath on a useful reply from them, they made it
quite clear what priority non-workstation-users under non-windows have
for them. You could also try e.g. the Phoronix forums [1], I would
imagine they have a lot more nvidia users than this list. But I'd really
recommend you give nouveau a shot first.

Re: Error messages in .xseesion-errors

2010-03-29 Thread Steffen Schaumburg
Had a brief look at it, looks like the messages are from libvlc, which
may well be used by other media players. Try this:
Open the .xsession-errors file straight after logging in and wait a bit.
Assuming nothing unexpected appears start running whatever media players
you use, bearing in mind that browsers also often include media player
plugins

I think what Risto said is correct, but even easier - as far as I
understand X, which admittedly is not that much - it should be possible to
simply create /etc/X11/xorg.conf with only the sections relevant to your
mouse. That way you can use the goodness of X automagical configuration
for
everything, except the mouse where it's obviously not working.

I completely agree. I'll spare you my opinion of the US criminal justice
system, but this is a clear case of organised theft (or fraud or
embezzlement - IANAL) whether or not it is possible to get a conviction.
There's two key points to consider:
- eBay (owners of Paypal) will continue these crimes without a doubt -
why shouldn't they?
- Many free software projects/developers use or will use eBay/Paypal to
receive donations/payments - and eBay will inevitably steal from some of
these. Whilst Xorg survived relatively unscathed with the $5k missing
most projects would be hurt BADLY if they got their donations account
stolen.

I propose the following actions:
- Unless it's definitely a complete waste of time civil as well as
criminal charges should be brought by Xorg against eBay, as far as this
is possible without undue costs or risks to Xorg. Remember - just
because the contract says that eBay can steal doesn't mean it's not a
crime if they actually do it. Laws supersede contracts.
- Information about this (especially emails from eBay "support") should
be made public and should be publicised, e.g. by emails to this list,
the Xorg Wiki (on that note - there's actually a suggestion on there to
use Paypal to donate to Xorg devs...), etc. Due to the particularly
despicable nature of the crime (what kind of a sick perverted bastard
steals from a charity?) and the likely negative effect on other related
projects I'd go as far as putting a link or banner about this right on
the front page.

Cheers, Steffen

PS: Bear in mind that my choice of words may not be the best if one is
concerned about lawsuits by eBay for e.g. slander ;)

Disclaimer: I never did this so my suggestion may be stupid.
Are you sure you're actually underscanning? Sounds to me like you're
changing the resolution, I would imagine the TV "auto-compensates" (by
stretching) for that just like a PC monitor does.
I think this link might help you:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Modeline_Database
Under section 2 it has a link to a modeline calculator that may be
useful, or maybe your TV is even listed in the custom modelines section.
If it is not and you find working lines you could add them tho ;)

One thing that strikes me as odd is that the issue even exists with
HDMI. What's the point in overscan when you don't have a DA converter?

Re: Multiseat with VGAArbiter on 2 Radeon cards - found KMS

2010-01-09 Thread Steffen Schaumburg
Hi,
I'll be brief, due to some changed circumstances I unfortunately no
longer have a need (and in a couple of days won't have the equipment any
more either) for dual seat. However I wanted to share what I got in case
somebody else is trying to get it to work. So this is what happened
since my last mail:
- I tried the cards (one HD 34xx, one HD4350) individually. I finally
figured out how to get it to load the firmware/microcode: copy the
appropriate file(s) from
http://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/radeon_ucode/ to
{kernel-sources-root}/firmware/radeon/ and tell it about it, see my
attached config. But unfortunately with the 4350 it just blackscreened.
- So I traded the 4350 against another 34xx (so now I was trying with
two HD34xx cards). Now with a normal kdmrc (attached) and no xorg-conf
at all it booted fine, loaded X fine, it even played 720p videos fine.
- So I tried putting my multiseat xorg.conf and kdmrc (both attached)
back in but now unfortunately when I tried to start kdm (using
/etc/init.d/xdm start) it just crashed on me again.

So that's about it, if anyone has any further questions to me about this
I'd be more than happy to help.
Other than that, thanks everyone for helping me out, and sorry for not
seeing it through.

Re: Multiseat with VGAArbiter on 2 Radeon cards

2009-12-22 Thread Steffen Schaumburg
Okay I tried turning off arbiter by just editing .config
("CONFIG_VGA_ARB=n") but when I type my usual "make && make
modules_install" it changes it back automatically. I tried rebooting
into this new kernel anyways but it continues to load arbiter as
evidenced in the boot messages and as expected it still doesn't work. I
haven't been able to turn off arbiter in make menuconfig as its
automatically turned on by other options so it doesn't even show up in
there.

Does anyone have any ideas what I'm doing? Or is anyone out here running
a multiseat setup with radeon cards? I'd be very very grateful if you
could send me your xorg.conf, ?dm config (e.g.
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc), the version numbers of your xorg-server,
type&version of driver (at this stage I'd even try the proprietary
drivers) and what you use to launch X as well as its version.

So any tips, no matter how unlikely you think they are to work, would be
greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Steffen

Re: Multiseat with VGAArbiter on 2 Radeon cards

2009-12-05 Thread Steffen Schaumburg
Okay I figured I might as well try Tiago's idea. I'm not sure what if I
used the right command but here's what I tried:
xterm -display :1 -e bash &
xterm -display :1.0 -e bash &
xterm -display localhost:1 -e bash &
xterm -display localhost:1.0 -e bash &

I tried all four as both root and user and they all fail saying "Can't
open display: localhost:1.0" (with different display depending on what I
used).

Thanks, Steffen

Re: Multiseat with VGAArbiter on 2 Radeon cards

2009-12-05 Thread Steffen Schaumburg
Hi,
thanks both of you for your replies - I'm going to try the KMS method
first. Now the problem is I can't turn off Arbiter in the kernel, make
menuconfig can find it with the search, but the option isn't in the
menu. Is there a boot option to force off arbiter (or, alternatively, to
force on KMS which would turn off arbiter by necessity?)? I checked the
docs at
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=blob_plain;f=Documentation/vgaarbiter.txt;hb=HEAD

but can't see anything. Or should I just manually edit the .config file
- I'm inclined to trust menuconfig to not be displaying the option for a
reason, or am I giving it too much credit? Any pointers would be
appreciated.

Thanks, Steffen
