I know that problem very well. I 'fixed' it by switching to git, however with the help of the list I figured enabling DRI has a big impact. Yep, that's the one. But the problem is still there. The pauses/freezes are so annoying I had to switch back to 1.4.2. Even just moving a window will freeze every second for a 1 second.
