 Seems to help as well.

So it seems to be a bug either in XAA or in the radeon driver's XAA
RENDER acceleration code, though more likely the latter, as all the
reports seem to be from radeon users.

Using EXA isn't an acceptable solution? :)

 when I rotate display using
 xrandr -o 1
 or
 xrandr --output DVI-0 --rotation left
the display is corrupted. I can see some parts of the windows rotated,
some part non-rotated, and some garbage everywhere.
 I'm using compiz.

Then it can't work until xserver 1.5 due to previously missing AIGLX
damage reporting.

Note that even without a GLX compositing manager, support for
accelerated rotation with R300 generation cards was only just pushed to
the upstream Git repository. Also, AFAIK it's only working correctly
with EXA at this point.

Ok, fair enough.
I've tried with metacity, and you're right it's damn slow.
But the display is also corrupted. All the pixel on the right of the
(non-rotated) screen are garbled, I'd say on the last fifth of the

I took a screenshot, but on the screenshot everything is allright. So
the corruption happens only on-screen.

Re: Error in video display -- ati 3D RagePro card

2008-01-17 Thread George -
I have recently installed Fedora 8.0 and also
Ubuntu 7.10 on two of my 'under used' systems.

I reconfigured those systems to use 2 ati cards:
ati 3D Rage Pro rev92 and ati 3D Rage Pro 215GP rev 92.

However, the display shows some garbage.

Does the following patch help ?

http://people.freedesktop.org/~gsap7/mach64-cursor.patch

I'll push it to git if it does, since it's been reported multiple times ...

Are you willing to test one or two other patches against git HEAD ?

 Hi,

I put some patches in http://people.freedesktop.org/~gsap7/ for splitting
mach64 out of ati (I didn't upload patch 0003 which just deletes files).

The plan is that mach64 goes to xf86-video-mach64, while the ati wrapper,
r128 and radeon stay with xf86-video-ati.

Distros get xf86-video-ati to depend on xf86-video-mach64, so nobody should
 be affected.

People who compile from git get the messages from
 http://people.freedesktop.org/~gsap7/0004-add-warning-messages.patch in
xf86-video-ati and a similar message in xf86-video-mach64 telling them to
either install xf86-video-ati or change the Driver line in xorg.conf to
 mach64.

 How does this sound ?

Looks good to me, but I'll let the distro packagers chime in as
they'll most like deal with the fall out. Any chance you want to
break out r128 as well?

Any change you test

Basically looks like software rendering fallback overhead. A lot of it could be

it applies with:

cd top dir for ati package

patch -p1 mach64-cursor.patch

you may want to try git HEAD directly (for ubuntu):

sudo apt-get install git-core

sudo apt-get build-dep xserver-xorg-video-ati

git-clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati
cd xf86-video-ati
git-checkout -b test master
patch -p1 mach64-cursor.patch

./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr

Hey, I tried again git head - no change - I just freezes. My stable setup is
now: A checkout of c9a0cee97ca69e8fe1e1937c7670fa903214cded and cherry-picking
the PAL fix (2b1fae668ddabbc72e5fc31365302ea722174df1). This brings me a
working dual head setup, that I can use with my external CRT or TV-Out (well
apart from bug #13872). But the upcoming render acceleration make newer commits
interesting.

   Hi again ...

   when I rotate display using
   xrandr -o 1
   or
   xrandr --output DVI-0 --rotation left
the display is corrupted. I can see some parts of the windows
   rotated,
some part non-rotated, and some garbage everywhere.
   I'm using compiz.

Then it can't work until xserver 1.5 due to previously missing AIGLX
  damage reporting.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 AR
   [Radeon 9600]

Note that even without a GLX compositing manager, support for
accelerated rotation with R300 generation cards was only just
  pushed to
the upstream Git repository. Also, AFAIK it's only working correctly
  with EXA at this point.

 Ok, fair enough.
I've tried with metacity, and you're right it's damn slow.
But the display is also corrupted. All the pixel on the right of the
(non-rotated) screen are garbled, I'd say on the last fifth of the
 display.
I took a screenshot, but on the screenshot everything is allright. So
 the corruption happens only on-screen.

What version of the driver/xserver are you using? Earlier version of
radeon had some bugs when it came to rotation.

   xserver 2:1.4.1~git20080105-1
   xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.198~git20080109.10e7636c-1

Can you get a picture of the corruption maybe with a digital camera?
Also are you using EXA or XAA?

Here are the pictures (1 from afar, 1 nearer).
I hope attaching big files to a bug is ok.

Can you post your xorg log and config? Does rotation work ok under
XAA? How about if you disable tiling (Option ColorTiling False)?
Looks like an issue with damage and tiling.

Disabling colortiling makes it work.
Do I need to test something else ?

--- Comment #6 from Vedran Rodic [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2008-01-17 13:11:39 PST

this bug is actually also valid for the at least one additional driver: intel

Use Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps true (and add Option AccelMethod XAA
for newer drivers, since the EXA performance is also really bad for the intel
driver).

I've changed the bug 12069 title, and the component and reassigned the bug to
the default assignee, since this is clearly a wider XAA problem.
