2013-10-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70880

--- Comment #8 from e.swanson+xorgb...@alloscomp.com ---
I don't think this bug is a duplicate. It occurred with 3.8.0-29
(http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/any/linux-image-3.8.0-29-generic) in Ubuntu
13.04. Also, I don't see two sets of modes, and I'm using 1280x720.

2013-10-26 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70880

By the way, soon after I replied you I found that the audio could be affected
by the resolution you are using. See the following bug:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69675

>From what I understand, it means that I can hear sound with the resolution I am
using with rate 44100Hz could be considered some sort of luck.

Therefore maybe you can try different rate with different resolution and
refresh rate to see if your problem is of the same nature. Or you can try with
a newer kernel, the fixes are applied in 3.12-rc5.

Yet I might not be right about anything. I am having no luck with the new
kernel myself (since it seems to bring other problems).

Unfortunately, no such luck. I changed that setting in asound.conf and tried a
speaker-test forced to that rate, still no sound.

$ speaker-test -c 2 -r 44100 -D hw:1,3

speaker-test 1.0.27.1

Playback device is hw:1,3
Stream parameters are 44100Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 44100Hz (requested 44100Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 16384
Period size range from 32 to 8192
Using max buffer size 16384
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 4096
was set buffer_size = 16384
 0 - Front Left
 1 - Front Right
Time per period = 5.577833

dmesg on 3.11.6

HDMI audio was working at some point in the past. Some upgrades or changes I
did while on Ubuntu 13.04 caused it to stop working, so I tried to upgrade to
13.10. I also tried upgrading to a newer 3.11 generic kernel (which didn't
help).

$ uname -a
Linux fserv 3.11.6-031106-generic #201310181453 SMP Fri Oct 18 18:54:15 UTC
2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I have the radeon.audio=1 parameter in my kernel command line, and I've got the
1,3 device in my aplay -l. When I try playing a sound through the speakers,
using mplayer, aplay, or speaker-test, it looks like it's working, but I get no
sound.

The TV's sound works fine with other machines, and used to work with this
machine. I've attached my dmesg, the output of avivotools regs hdmi, some
output from aplay, and my asound.conf.

This is ARUBA, which means DCE6.1 (see

Unfortunately audio is supported on DCE2 to DCE5 only. Right now I'm too busy

I cannot get any audio out of the mainboards HDMI port. The system is booted
with radeon.audio=1, the HDMI port is listed correctly in aplay -l and every
channel is unmuted.

I tried the kernels 3.9.x, 3.10.x and 3.11-rc3. Audio works with the fglrx

So now it sort-of works, but I have to boot with the monitor
disconnected, then plug it afterwards. I have some "stereo mode not
supported" messages in the log, but I can hear some sound.
So first question: why is that, and how to make sound go to the right
connector ? I tried switching the connectors, but same result. I don't
switch off that machine very often, but having to unplug/replug isn't
that practical.

Then, I have a little problem: there's only a 2-channels mode supported.
When using speaker-test from ALSA package, all other configuration
result in:
[r...@awak:~]$ LANG=C speaker-test -D hw:1,3 -c 5

speaker-test 1.0.23

Playback device is hw:1,3
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 5 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Channels count (5) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
Setting of hwparams failed: Invalid argument

Passthrough-mode with DTS or Dolby works, but as it causes its share of
troubles I'd prefer for n-channels (with n!=2) to work.
Does someone know how do to that ?

Thanks,
Xav

HDMI audio on HD 2600 not working

2011-01-09 Thread Xavier Bestel
Hi,

I've just bought an (used) HDMI audio amp (Yamaha RX-V1600) and tried to
connect it to my HTPC (pc running XBMC, debian/squeeze using
xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.13.1-2+squeeze1 + kernel 2.6.37-rc7-amd64,
with a Radeon RH 2600), via a DVI-to-HDMI cable. There are 2 cables
running from the card, one to the amp, an other one to a monitor.

The problem is that I can't hear anything on the amp. Here are the
outputs on the machine:
[r...@awak:~]$ aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Here's how I try to play something:
[r...@awak:~]$ aplay -D hw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/shutdown1.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/shutdown1.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian,
Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
Warning: rate is not accurate (requested = 44100Hz, got = 48000Hz)
 please, try the plug plugin

... which does nothing (note that I don't fully dismiss the possibility
I could have misconfigured that complex beast of an amp). I don't care
too much about the wrong rate for now.

When reading the apm's documentation, they say the HDMI device has to
support HDCP. Could that be the problem ? Is there something to
configure somewhere to have that activated ?

Thanks,

Xav

Alright, thanks, I just tested 2.6.33.2 drm (Courtesy of Ubuntu 10.04
with 2.6.32 shipping the 33.2 drm at the moment) with an RV770 but got
no HDMI audio, I'm going to jump to 2.6.34 to see if I see some noise
 bleeps.

Yes that's right. :-) I tried drm-radeon-testing the other day and it
failed to properly suspend/resume, so right now I'm unable to try and
see for myself if any of the recent commits fix this issue. So I thought
to poll for updates here on this list, this time in public as others may
also be interested in this.

Ok, thanks for the update!

That's great, thanks for reporting back! :) Audio may eat some of your
CPU for now, as it polls audio engine for state. This should be
totally improved with 2.6.35 I hope (thanks goes to Christian).

I tried to hack on audio IRQ first, something that Christian almost

The opensuse.org version features some replies indicating that the port

Has there been any improvement on this? Can I help by doing some testing
on my Radeon 3200HD based GPU?

Actually I just now realized I've compared non-KMS radeonhd with KMS
radeon. So that was KMS vs. non-KMS. Maybe it was KMS that introduced
improvement for me. I'd need to try non-KMS radeon driver.

That is caused by moving GPU drivers to kernel and that movement has
some really important and nice reason. But finally we should get
stable kernel drivers (KMS) and all distros including then :)

You're probably right... Too bad though that one now has to abandon his
distro kernel if wanting to try out bleeding edge GPU drivers. Well, I'm
sure this has been discussed at length already ;-) Given some time, the
distro's base kernel might be good enought to be able to just try out
different kernel modules.

Both drivers implement Xv, however radeon may be little better that
radeonhd. I think I've experienced that when testing 1080p movie, but
did not really measure that. One I'm sure I didn't notice any
difference between drivers playing movies up to 720p. On the other
hand I know radeonhd has some nice work done by Yang about colors for
Xv (as Xv not only scales but also converts colors). I don't think
there are any other Xv differences. I've never seen any tearing using
radeonhd.

The "right" thing to do it to switch to KMS these days.

The HDMI KMS audio technology does not appear to be in linux-next, or am I
blind? If the code is ready then perhaps you should ask the Christian to
commit it there so that it can be moved into the git-release tree sooner
rather than later?

Well all that KMS stuff is a bit to bleeding edge for me - not that I
wouldn't trust that stuff but I rather stick with my distro kernels.

Let me ask my original question the other way round: playing video on my
3200HD over HDMI - would I actually benefit from using the radeon driver
(vs. the radeonhd), provided I somehow get the HDMI audio ported?
http://www.x.org/wiki/radeon says that this driver has (better) video
playback, but - without knowing any of the details - the radeonhd driver
seems to do fine so far.

If you ask: why bother if your system is ok as it is? - well, I like to
run the "right" thing, so if there is more OSS focus on the radeon
driver I want to use it. Secondly, I like to optimize things, so if
there's a better driver I want to use it. I'm sure you know what I mean :-)

The opensuse.org version features some replies indicating that the port
was not complete.

Has there been any improvement on this? Can I help by doing some testing
on my Radeon 3200HD based GPU?

It'll be tough without docs or knowing how it's wired up.

I had a chance to find the chip that powers this. Its a Silicon Image
TMDS ParallelLink Sil 1930.

http://www.siliconimage.com/docs/1390_1930_1368_FINAL.pdf

The product brief says that it connects with I2S, S/PDIF, or HD-Audio
to the audio codec and I2C to the GPU. I'm not sure if the GPU
controls the audio pass-through via I2C or not.

I don't think any datasheets are publicly available.

Looks like I'll have to do some physical examination.

Looks pretty standard; internal tmds used for hdmi port. I suspect
hdmi audio is implemented via some oem-specific solution.

Native HDMI audio support is only available on RS6xx/R6xx/R7xx chips.
I suspect there is either some platform specific magic required in to
get it to work (i.e., some external component does the audio/video
mixing), or your laptop's oem used an external hdmi encoder. Can you
send me your video bios?

as root:
cd /sys/bus/pci/devices/
echo 1 > rom
cat rom > /tmp/vbios.rom
echo 0 > rom

HDMI audio on R500

2009-03-23 Thread Russ Dill
I have a laptop with an HDMI output. In Vista, I can get the Realtek
HD audio driver to pass audio through the HDMI interface. In Linux, no
amount of fiddling with IEC958 switiches and PCM devices will get
audio to come through the HDMI interface.

00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 Host Bridge (rev 10)
[...]
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB4x0 High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 01)
[...]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon
Mobility X1600]

An alsa developer was thinking that since the video chip interfaces
with the TMDS encoder chip and must somehow be involved. Is anyone
aware of any registers or bits that would enable HDMI audio
pass-through?
