Michael should really be running xf86-video-ati and libdrm from git and
latest kernel-rcX, otherwise the perfomance will continue to suck in his
articles.

There are performance improvements and there will be more as time goes by,
but the majority of them is and will be disabled with old kernels and DDX
drivers.

That would be fine for a clean test between Radeon and Catalyst, but the first 
link has benchmarks of old releases of radeon that are way better than the 
current stable oneThere are many regressions that haven't been addressed.

That's understandable because there is no tiling and no DRI2 Swap on the
tested KMS machine. Both improve performance and both are probably available
in Mesa 7.2 (except that DRI2 - DRI1). Feel free to rerun the tests with
the two, you might end up pleasantly surprised.
