When I worked at VA Linux Systems many people had 2 and 3 headed systems with XFree86 4.0, most of them running with Xinerama as I am now. This stuff is readily available with XFree86, but only with particular video drivers. For the 12 head display this is true. We had to use Matrox cards as they didn't require softbooting which is not possible on higher PCI buses on the Netfinity due to a brain dead architecture of the Intel chipset used in this box. For the common case where one just wants to run 2 or 3 heads on a standard PC one can use pretty much any graphics card available. I'm frequently testing configurations with a mix of *different* graphics cards including ancient ISA boards. There weren't many setups I couldn't get to work. The only problem I do recall was when I was trying to get a dual MGA G200 card (with two G200 chips) to work with a G450 dual head card. This configuration didn't work appearantly due to limitations in the binary only HAL library provided by Matrox. Therefore I really don't understand the big fuzz about getting multihead to work! [Xpert][PATCH] Xv,Trident, and hsync/vsync
I have written a patch that allows the user to tweak the Xv hsync/vsync offset values. It works great on my Twinhead Powerslim 600 @ 800x600 with XvHsync=-23. I think it will work on any trident chip, but I am not sure if TridentInit() gets called when the resolution changes, in which case this patch may only work for a single resolution. There are two new variables in the XF86Config file: XvHsync and XvVsync These variables will adjust the hsync/vsync values by some amount (relative to the default, so if hsync would have been 100, and you set xvHsync=-10, hsync will be 90) This is my first patch to X, so if people could look it over, and if someone could submit it (or tell me how) assuming it is apropriate, that'd be great. Note that this patch doesn't fix the problem of the offset getting messed up when the screen is switched off and on from the function keys, but that is a problem for another day. RE: [xpert]i815 - overlay output
Wait... I think this is going to be i815M specific. You'll probably have to check the chip revision to be sure. Do something like if(pI810-PciInfo-chipRev == Whatever yours is) { i810Reg-OverlayActiveStart = mode-CrtcHTotal - 16; i810Reg-OverlayActiveEnd = mode-CrtcHDisplay - 16; } else { i810Reg-OverlayActiveStart = mode-CrtcHTotal - 32; i810Reg-OverlayActiveEnd = mode-CrtcHDisplay - 32; } I'll do some testing and see if this problem really only happens on the i815M or if it will happen on all i810/i815 with an LCD. The test above should at least be safe until we know for sure. -Matt i finally got it i applied the patch to i810_driver.c Thanks Matt for the hint :) --- i810_driver-unpatched.cThu Nov 29 19:40:28 2001 +++ i810_driver.c Thu Nov 29 19:40:01 2001 @@ -1452,8 +1452,8 @@ } /* OVRACT Register */ - i810Reg-OverlayActiveStart = mode-CrtcHTotal - 32; - i810Reg-OverlayActiveEnd = mode-CrtcHDisplay - 32; + i810Reg-OverlayActiveStart = mode-CrtcHTotal - 16; + i810Reg-OverlayActiveEnd = mode-CrtcHDisplay - 16; /* Turn on interlaced mode if necessary */ You can get the binary at http://shell.dnload.com/i810_drv.o Markus ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert

[Xpert]good dual-head video card solution for KDE/Xinerama Font AA
Hello all, I'm thinking of replacing my Matrox G450 with another card (or two cards) that will be usable with KDE2, Xinerama and Font Anti-Aliasing. The card(s) need to support 1280x1024 in at least 24 bit color (with a refresh rate of 70Mhz or higher) So far I've eliminated all dual-head matrox cards and 3dfx voodoo cards. The G450 drivers don't allow X Acceleration in the secondary display when using Font Anti-Aliasing with QT, and Matrox doesn't seem to care/notice the problem. 3dfx Voodoo cards lock X if they are not set as the primary video card in the BIOS. Does anyone out there have a good solution that you know works for these requirements? Thanks for any advice you can lend, darrell ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert

Have you tried the merged display mode that is available in the latest Matrox Powerdesk utility? I've only gone as far as to enable AA fonts and work with Konqueror but that seems to be working fine. On 29 Nov 2001, James Gallagher wrote: I hope this is not a FAQ, but if it is I can't find it! I upgraded from 4.0.3 to 4.1.0 to see if that would stop random display freezes. When I did 3D acceleration stopped working. Disabling DRI. I tried loading the r128 module by hand (as described in the 4.1.0 docs re: DRI) and get an error as follows: [root@dcz tmp]# insmod /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/char/drm/r128.o /lib/modules/2.4.2-2/kernel/drivers/char/drm/r128.o: init_module: Cannot allocate memory Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters You are presumeably using Red Hat Linux 7.1 with the stock kernel from the 2.4.2-2 I see there. I've also tried using my old XFree86 config file but that didn't help. Here's the specifics of my system: Red hat 7.1 (kernel 2.4.9-19), ATI Rage 128 (actually it's an Xpert 128). Your above insmod is showing you trying to load a 2.4.2 kernel module presumeably into the 2.4.19 kernel, which definitely wont work. You _never_ need to ever load any kernel module for DRM to work. XFree86 loads the required kernel module itself. If it doesn't then you either don't have the proper kernel, or don't have the module for the card you're using. None of our officially released kernels for Red Hat Linux 7.1 contain DRM modules that are compatible with 4.1.0. You need to use the Red Hat Linux 7.2 kernel RPM packages to have working DRM with XFree86 4.1.0. How I upgraded: 4.0.3 was installed from red hat's CDROM; I got 4.1.0 binaries from the xfree86 web site and ran the Xinstall program. It is recommended to use the XFree86 4.1.0 RPM packages that come with Red Hat Linux 7.2 instead of the binaries from xfree86.org, as they contain the latest stable bug fixes from the xf-4_1-branch, as well as numerous other fixes and enhancements, and will integrate in with the rest of the system better. There most likely will be an XFree 4.1.0 release for 7.1 sometime but the 7.2 packages are fine for now. Any help would be appreciated and again, I apologize if this is a FAQ. If you're interested in tracking our RPM packages more closely, and following development, you might also like to join [EMAIL PROTECTED] I make test releases and send announcements there, as well as discussing issues that are specific to Red Hat Linux, etc. You can also try #xfree86 on irc.redhat.com if you'd like some realtime chatter. [Xpert]BladeXP
Hi I am by no means a X expert and am trying the get my X working with my new notebook. The video card is a bladeXP and although though some of the other postings I have had some success, I still find that things are not quite right. For example the mouse acts very strangely and will at times jump all over the place and other times it works fine. I have the vga=791 line in lilo and and borrowed a XF86Config-4 to get it to this point. I tried the -configure but the result was a blank screen. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I might try next?
