[Xpert]830mg config

2002-04-25 Thread zoggian spattersby

hi,

i'm trying to configure linux on a sony pcg-r600hfpd.
as per the intel instructions, i've upgraded my kernel
[originaly 2.4.10, redhat 7.2] to 2.4.18.

i've compiled with intel i810/i815/i830m (on-board)
support and, in the drm drivers, enabled intel i810.
i've also tried compiling this as a module from the
xfree86 4.2 source. [4.2 is installed].

no matter what configuration i try, i always get the
same error: no matching modes found in the
configuration file. only the following modes are
supported by the bios in this bpp: 640x480.

above this error is a warning: i810: no matching
device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found,
though on the next line of the log file it says that
the chipset is found.

has anyone else seen this? i can run vesa in 1024x768
but the windows manager won't start, i just get a
couple of windows without scrollbars - obviously a
sick puppy.i've been tearing my hair out with this for
about two weeks now. any advice gratefully received.

[Xpert]System Lockup During Screensaver

2002-04-25 Thread D. Harley Klein

I'm running RH7.2 w/ XFree86 4.1 on a Dell Precision 610 (Diamond 8MB
Permedia2 AGP card, Dell D1626HT monitor). X freezes up (won't respond)
after the screen saver kicks in. The screen simply holds a constant image
and there's no response from the keyboard or mouse. I can log into the
system remotely using ssh and safely shut the system down, but am unable
to restart X. I'm new to linux, so I'm not sure whether or not killing X
should remedy the problem. It doesn't seem to do anything as far as the
display and keyboard/mouse reponse are concerned. Disabling the
screensaver seems to be one way of avoiding all of this, but I'd rather
find out what the problem is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

[Xpert]Re: dual head Radeon VE QY (7000) support

2002-04-25 Thread Don Russell

Another (happier) update on the Radeon dual head stuff.

After fighting with this on Friday and sending you email I ran away
for the weekend. On Saturday a squirrel chose to end it's life in our
building's power transformer, taking out the AC power for a few
hours. On Monday I came it to find all my machines rebooted ( so much
for setting any up-time records :) ), and both heads on the Radeon
7000 up and working. I'm guessing that the hardware needed to be fully
powered down to undo the previous single head configuration
settings. I've had other problems with dual head software on the alpha
platform caused by incomplete initialization of the second head.

Anyway, it's now running just fine. If you like I can send you my
XF86Config-4, but there's nothing special in it. /var/log/XFree86.0.log
has all the appropriate info for two heads.

For those that tuned in late, here's the original configuration
  description...

Did you ever get your dual head Radeon to activate the second head?

I have more or less the same symptoms (first head works fine, the mouse
will move off the screen to what should be the second head, but the
second monitor never comes to life).

I'm running a Redhat 2.4.9-31 kernel with Redhat 7.1 and updated rpms to
 add Xfree 4.2.

My symptoms are slightly different in that my XFree86.0.log does not
show any references to RADEON(1), only to RADEON(0). I would guess I
have something messed up in my XF86Config-4, but it does let me move the
mouse off-screen, so at least part of the system thinks there are two
 heads.

[Xpert]Larger than Largo - load testing X windows

2002-04-25 Thread Stuart Guthrie

There is a green field site in Sydney, Australia that
could be potentially larger than Largo. They wish to
test more than 450 users running thin-client X on a
server without having to have 450 client terminals. Is
there a simple method to do this, I've thought of:

1) Recording X network packets then sending them from
multiple dummy 'clients' on the same PC. (This was
done during the Mindcraft benchmarking episode by
simulating 'netbench').
2) Some sort of scripting process that can simulate a
use on the server.
3) Expensive load testing software eg mercury
interactive (not an option).

As you can see, this is not my area of expertise but
help is most appreciated.

Any ideas most welcome,

Stuart Guthrie

[Xpert]Re: ATI Radeon VE dual head support? [PATCH for Dell OEM boards]

2002-04-25 Thread Paul Stewart

We have bought a number of Dells with the OEM RadeonVE card. I can
certainly confirm that they are strange compared to the out-of-box
Radeon VE QY, although the PCI vendor id is identical. Have a look at:

http://wetlogic.net/stewart/xfree-radeon-ve/radeon-ve-dell.jpg

to see the card and the single connector on the board. Unlike the
retail version of the board I have, this board does not duplicate
output on both connectors, but instead displays only on cable 1 (the
blue connector on the Y-adaptor in the picture), and nothing at all
on cable 2.

When I tried a dual-head configuration that works successfully on a
retail version of the Radeon VE versions, I found two problems which
I patched:

  - The first problem is that the primary interface does not report
the BIOS value that radeon_driver.c expects in the function
RADEONGetBIOSParameters(). Instead, it reports only a CRT on
the secondary connector. In the single-headed case this works
correctly.

In the dual-head case things would also work correctly except
that when RADEONPreInit() is called on the second screen instance,
it checks for BypassSecondary and quite silently returns FALSE.
This stumped me for a long time since there were no error
messages in the X log file that indicated why Screen 1 was
completely ignored in my XF86Config-4.

I'm not sure I understand why it is an error ifthe BIOS
doesn't claim to detect a second monitor. Does this mean
the user must reboot in order to attach a second monitor, or
in many cases just because it happened to be off at boot time?
In my patch, I commented the return out, but I think it's
worth opening a discussion (I'm not on Xpert, so please Cc
me). The behavior as a result of this change is that if
there's a second screen definition and the card is multi-head,
and there's at least one monitor attached, the second monitor
is pre-initted.

  - The second problem is that the secondary monitor on the OEM
Dell Radeon VE uses DAC2 for output. There was actually a
bit of commented out code in RADEONInitCrtc2Registers() already,
so I simply added an option named Crt2Dac2 and tested for
it there. The true maintainers of this code may want to add
another boolean field to RADEONEntRec and hunt for the option
elsewhere, if they think that's cleaner.

Thesecond screen definition in my XF86Config-4 now looks like:

Section Device
Identifier ATI Radeon 1
Driver radeon
BoardName Radeon
BusID PCI:1:0:0
Option AGPMode 4
Option Crt2Dac2
Screen 1
EndSection

The third problem, which I didn't deal with, is that the DDC info
for the two monitors attached was swapped. In other words, the DDC
info listed for screen 0 (the monitor displaying the settings listed
in the Screen 0 Section, also the monitor connected to the first
cable) appeared in the section of the log file dedicated to screen 1,
and vice versa. This wasn't a big enough problem for me to solve,
and since it's hard to solve it without yet another option, I decided
to forego it.

Anyway, I hope this helps some people. Here it is, based on
4.2.99.1 (CVS as of yesterday):

called light frame that allows increased sharpness and brightness of
specific areas (windows) on the screen

In Windows, LightFrame will boost brightness and sharpness for the
selected window. This will make the display of photos or videos more
lively, as you are used to on a TV.

I would like to know whether this feature is or would be available also
in Linux. If not, what is needed to get implemented in Linux?

This feature sounds... strange. It sounds like you just cut-n-pasted
the advertising copy for this monitor

Yes, I have quoted a paragraph from the README file coming with
the Windows program. Because I think it described well the feature.

--how does it work in the real world?

It did performs very well. The selected window really looks brighter
and sharper, making the image much better to look at. It brings
more life to the image. Watching TV is more pleasant with it.

I'm skeptical of the claims because the color space reachable
with the 24/32 bits of modern video cards is larger than the color space
NTSC (Never The Same Color, television standard in the USA) can
 describe.

Altering brightness and contrast for one rectangle on the screen instead
of the monitor as a whole would require the cooperation of the video
card, and would be dependent on the monitor supporting that operation.
XFree86 doesn't do things like that AFAIK. Which video card are you
using? Did this lightframe thing come with the monitor, or with the
video card? Can you yank your video card, replace it with a different
model, and continue to use lightframe?

The light frame is a feature of the _monitor_, not the video
card. It should work with any video card, althoug I have used
only two NVIDIA and one SiS video cards with it up to now.
Currently I am using a NVIDIA GeForce 2 MMX 400 64MB card.

The CD that comes with the monitor has a program that is used to activate
the light frame feature in the desired window. When run, this program
puts an icon in the tray area of the taskbar. To apply the feature
to a window, it is enough to click on the program icon in the tray area
an then clicking in the window. The window will be brighter and
sharper then. Very cool!

If the feature is tied to the monitor and not the card, you might be
able to hack support for it into X. This would require a lot of
programming skill on your part, though. If the feature is tied to the
video card and not the monitor, it probably relies on strange magic done
in proprietary 'Doze-only drivers. Regardless, you might want to
contact the manufacturer and ask about getting *complete* tech specs for
the monitor in question and how to turn on/off this feature.

As alread said, the feature is tied to the monitor and is activated by a
program for this specific purpose. It is not related to the video card.

I will contact the manufacturer (Philips) and ask about avaiability of
technical specifications for the manufacturer. But I do not have the time
and maybe the skills needed to add this functionality to XFree86
(although I am a programmer, I have not done X Window programming yet).

Once available the technical specifications, it would be nice if a
XFree86 developer could add the feature to XFree86.

Is there anybody else using a monitor with the light frame feature?

Romildo

To begin, you probably want to put
Option DontZap
Option DontZoom

in the Section ServerFlags of your XF86Config-4 file.

And, you may need to do a little hack to the server code and
then recompile X to disable the Ctrl-Alt-F1 sequences that allow
console switching under Linux (and I think FreeBSD too).

If you know C, it isn't too hard to do this... grep through
the server code for DontZap, and follow it from there...

I may be able to dig up a patch for this if you get stuck.

the same problem, please drop me a note so that I can list
your model on the above web site.

[Xpert]Memory allocation code/kernel interfaces? (Resounding Silence!)

2002-04-25 Thread Jeffery S. Norman

Having heard nothing on my specific problem (I have the Compaq Armada
M700/ATI Mobility that seems to break under XFree 4.2.0 and 4.1.x but only
after docking in the docking station) ... I am going to try to fix this
myself.

Could someone point me in the right direction (e.g., module, file, line,
whatever) to find the point at which XFree (or if application the ATI server
code) is trying to find a memory range for the display adapter.

Clipped below is the partial output from the log file that should clarify
what I am looking for.

I suspect, since this problem seems to have crept up in the latest kernel
versions, that there is some problem in the kernel's memory management as
well so any pointers there would be helpful too.

Also, any documentation or explanation as to the data structures used and
the sequence of modules/functions called in initializing the PCI/AGP memory
space for the device would be most useful.

RE: [Xpert]make ctrl-del-backspace not work? (i.e. die-hard-X)

2002-04-25 Thread Q-ha Park

oh, thanks for the reply.
SO, it was in XF86Config. i should subcribe to this mailing list to avoid
the filtering/approval process.
but the thing is i'm using tinyX from xfree41(i.e. X links Xfdev). i tried
the XF86Config; removed Zap, Zoom, even led control, but nothing worked(i
uncommented the corresponding fields as explained in XF86Config file) that's
kinda weird cuz some of the options in XFree86 seemed to work. changing PS/2
to IMPS/2 made my wheel mouse work. since i'm using serial console (Single
user mode, only one tty), i don't need to disable Ctrl-alt-F1 sequence.

hmmm, i can't figure out why this XF86Config is not working as it's supposed
to be.
