[Xpert]restart of X server kills /dev/dri/card0 ???

2002-02-19 Thread Armin Lambacher

Hello,

there are still problems with my Radeon VE on SuSE 7.3 with
Xfree86 4.2.0.

I managed to get the dri modules starting to load, at least I think so...

In my /var/log/XFree86.0.log I find the entry

(II) RADEON(0): Starting up Xvideo subsystems
(II) RADEON(0): membase=0xf000 memsize=0x0400 agpSize=0x0008
drmOpenDevice: minor is 0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenDevice: minor is 0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
[drm] failed to load kernel module "radeon"

If I have a look at /dev/dri, the directory is empty. Upon searching
on the net I found that there should be a /dev/dri/card0 entry.

I created that entry with

cd /dev/dri
mknod card0 c 226 1

I admit that I do not know whether the parameters are really correct.

A further ls -l showed that the entry was there. Then I restarted the
X server. Then again the /dev/dri directory was empty. I do not
understand why.

Can anybody help me?

Best regards

Armin

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE and DRI

2002-02-07 Thread Armin Lambacher

Hello again,

now that my mplayer works as expected, thanks to the advice of
Vladimir Dergachev, I tried to have a look at the low framerates of
glxgears.

If I ask glxinfo, it tells me:

name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes

But if I have a look at my /var/log/XFree86.0.log, somewhere near the
end it tells me

(II) RADEON(0): Largest offscreen area available: 1296 x 5444
(II) RADEON(0): Reinitializing Xvideo subsystems
(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
(II) RADEON(0): Starting up Xvideo subsystems

This seems strange to me. Some lines above the previous ones, I find

(II) Loading sub module "theatre"
(II) LoadModule: "theatre"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/multimedia/theatre_drv.o
(II) Module theatre: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.2.0, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.5
(II) RADEON(0): Device 4 on VIP bus ids as 0
(WW) RADEON(0): Option "CalcAlgorithm" is not used
(WW) RADEON(0): Option "DPMS" is not used
(II) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is
unresolved!
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is
unresolved!

I must admit that I do not know what the reason is for this. I use
SUSE 7.3 with the Xfree86 4.2.0 from their homepage and the gatos
drivers from sourceforge (which solved the problem of always visible
TV overlay...)

I assume that the above given information may not be enough, so at the
end I included my whole /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

Can anybody tell me what I should do?

Thanks a lot

Armin

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE <-> ATI Radeon 7500 or Matrox G400?

2002-02-04 Thread Armin Lambacher

Hello,

I just switched from a Matrox G400 to an ATI Radeon VE because the
later one has a DVI Connector. System is SuSE Linux 7.3 with the
XFree86 version 4.2.0 from the SuSE update server. After following the
install instructions the card runs. However, there are some issues
comparing it to the former G400

- gears seems to be slow. With the matrox card I got frame rates of
about 450 frames per second with the initial Window size. With the
Radeon VE I get about 175 frames per second.
(glxinfo tells me: direct rendering: Yes )

- When I use mplayer to play a video and use -vo xv the video stays
visual if I switch to another desktop. This was not the case with
the matrox card and is very annoying.

My main concern is the second point. I do not use the 3D acceleration
at the moment, but every now and then want to have a look at a movie
in spare time. I'd like to pause the video, switch to another desktop,
do something there and switch back and continue watching the
video. Would this be possible with the radeon driver?

And, can I use the TV-out with the Radeon 7500?

Thanks a lot

Armin
