If this function is expected to create a SIGFPE, why isn't it trapped and handled? It's actually a poorly named function all around IMHO. A better name would be s/katmai/sse/ SSE is the SIMD instruction set of the Intel architecture which was first introduced in the pentium 3 architecture where the processore core was codenamed Katmai.
