Hi,
Did you keep your Debian? Then you could simply skip the bootloader 
installation and use debians grub to boot your Ubuntu

[xubuntu-users] XFCE4-mixer in Xubuntu?

What happened to it?  It's the only reliable way to set volumes on a
multiple sound card system like mine.  Any help will be appreciated.

Not directly related, but a new LTS version will be released next April.
If you can't work this issue out, why not try 17.10 and see if it does
better? It'll be supported until 18.04 is available.
