[xubuntu-users] Xubuntu 18.10 dual monitor problem

2019-01-20 Thread Jeffery Small
System:
Machine:Intel Dual Xeon E5-2630
OS: Xubuntu 18.10
GPU:Nvidia K4000 GPU
Monitors: Dual Planar PX212M 1600x1200 Monitors

Problem:

System has been running fine for years under all past versions of
Xubuntu up through 18.04. The dual monitors are configures without
Xinerama so that separate desktop sessions with separate panels launch
on each screen.

After the recent upgrade to Xubuntu 18.10, the second monitor is not
being recognized. There is a display :0.0, but no active display :0.1.

However, the second monitor is actually active:

  * Upon boot it goes from black to a uniform grey

  * The mouse can travel onto the second screen (pointer visible)
and keyboard input (e.g., volume keys) are active

  * Xscreensaver displays on both monitors when it goes active

I have tried to manually start an xfwm4 window manager on the second
screen, but this is not possible without a defined :0.1 display.

Rather than overload this post with data, at the following link I have
provided
a number of screen shots, config file listings, output from relevant
commands
and log files to explain in detail what is (or isn't!) happening:

http://smallthoughts.com/xfce/xfce.html

Question:

What changed between Xubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 that is keeping the OS
from detecting the second screen and configuring it properly and what
can I do to rectify the problem? I will provide additional information
as needed.

Suggestions are truly appreciated. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Regards,

This all suggests that the X server at least sees the monitor.

Skimming through the Xorg log, I notice that the driver has named the
second screen "DFP-4", but your Xorg.conf is trying to configure
screen :0.1 using "DFP-3". Try changing the "Screen1" section in
Xorg.conf to use "DFP-4" instead of "DFP-3".

[xubuntu-users] Desktop suddenly behaving strangely, need help

2019-01-20 Thread avengethecathars
HelloSuddenly my desktop is behaving strangely. New windows lack the upper
right hand corner controls (maximize / minimize) and I cannot get to my desktop
and other folders. The panel has turned black, but still has all the items,
including the whisker menu. Cursor when on panel is now a black X.Can anyone
help me repair this. I am somewhat new to xubuntu and run 14.04 due to my
laptop being old and short on resources.Thank youPeter

Hello,

xrandr is a cmd that will give the NAME of the displays. I have seen
that the name might change from VGA1 to VGA-1 when upgrading and that
gives a problem, when I put a line in .profile that will arrange the
display (or some other old setting is read).

arandr is the GUI app, and lets you save a configuration, that can be used.

I currently have the identical problem, although my cursor is still an
arrow. It goes away when I reboot, but not if I restart X.

I *think* it's because I fiddled with my Desktop folder at one stage
shortly after installation (Mint 18) trying to get different wallpapers
on each of the four desktops. But I don't know what it is.

I thought it was happening at random but it *does* appear to be
connected with running some applications, and a signal that it is about
to happen is that the applications starts up with the title bar
off-screen. It's easy to get it back on-screen (Alt and left mouse
botton to slide the rest of the window into view). What I don't know is
*why* it happens, but from experience my guess is a bug in the video driver.

I would recommend Xubuntu or even Lubuntu if your hardware is old. I
have had very good results with both.

Well duuuh of course...sorry, stock response. But Lubuntu is worth
trying out, and you may find you can use a more recent version.

2019-01-20 Thread avengethecathars
Thanks again, Peter (and hello again!)The kind folks at the xubuntu IRC channel
sorted it for me. Unfortunately, the chat and terminal commands are all gone.
It the wizards there needed to know the version of window manager I use, and
the command involved xfwm4 .Sorry I could not be of more help.Hoping you are
well.P.
