Re: [xubuntu-users] Viber on 32 bit Architecture

I don't think it's even possible. 32-bit CPUs aren't forwards compatible
like that. I won't get into the technical details why, but I'll just say
that 64-bit programs require certain bits and pieces to be there that just
aren't present in 32-bit CPUs.

Right. Thank you. However, that’s exactly what this wine (www.winehq.org) is
for as far as I understand. Their software is supposed to run any windows’
program / application within Linux environment no matter whether it is 32 or 64
bit. There are a lot of tutorials and instructions online showing how to run
any windows.exe on Linux "in wine". It's pretty much like running Windows in a
VM or something. The idea of this wine is excellent but I am not sure about its
implementation and application in practice. According to these numerous "how
to"s and all the other tutorials it's working but I cannot seem to get it
working on mine.

Wine never promises to run anything Windows. There are programs that
won't run with Wine. Check the link below -- there's an app database
where you can research whether your app will run.

It certainly *was* because I had it running on my old 32-bit Inspiron
laptop. But I don't know if they still supply that version.

But I suspect I was using the commercial Codeweavers' Crossover WINE,
which supports *lots* more than the standard version. Either way, wine
is NOT a Windows emulator — it's an installer, so giving it a Windows
executable probably won't work unless it's an installer executable.

Also, Wine is also limited to the instruction sets you CPU supports. It
can't magically make your CPU support 64 bit instructions if it's a 32 bit
CPU. No software can overcome that hardware limitation.

P.S. I found one Viber's version that is 32 bit. It’s for win xp. The Viber's
version number is 9.5.0.8. I hope Wine will be able to process this installer
now!

Re: [xubuntu-users] Viber on 32 bit Architecture

2018-09-14 Thread Klaipedaville on Google
Thank you, Peter! Appreciate you follow up on this. Well, I have now tried
almost all the 32-bit old versions of Viber and guess what... they do not work
on Xubuntu 18.04 running on my 32-bit system. Plus, this Codeweavers Crossover
Wine has a trial version that I have just installed and... it's unable to run
any versions of Viber either so I am not sure what is wrong but it looks
like Viber (either 32 or 64) will never run on any Linux 32-bit machines. I am
clueless again. They could have made it like Skype for web for example where
there are no downloads, no installations, or anything else required at all,
simply type in web.skype.com in any browser on any OS, log in and you are good
to go. Do you think Viber portable may work? It is supposed to be
self-sufficient if this version exists at all but... then again... if it's a
hardware problem... I think it's going to be my last try before I give up on
this Viber for good.

Dennis
