sorry for the delay [~varun_saxena],
Basically update was to ensure that the timeline client address needs to be
updated even if amrmproxy is not used. And the address will be made available
in the response of AM registration/reheartbeat.

Sorry, my intention wasnt to push it in immediately. I will not push anything
before rebase is complete.
I basically wanted to check with Naga as he had told me offline that he wanted
to fix something in the documentation. He seems to have gone off for the day
anyways. Will check with him tomorrow.

Sangjin Lee commented on YARN-5174:
---

I am fine with the current statement. My point earlier was whether we should
draw more attention to this than is needed.

Individual frameworks can do either of the approaches you pointed out. I
suspect most frameworks already aggregate values at the app-equivalent level
and are capable of emitting already-aggregated metrics at the YARN application
entity. I hope the other option is more of an exception.

{quote}
Say, in case of Spark on YARN, multiple spark executors will be launched (with
each one executing multiple tasks). So, if they ever integrate with ATSv2 and
report say some executor level metrics, then we can make it clear that they
themselves will have to roll over these metrics to app level. This will not be
an immediate use case though, if ever.
{quote}
We'd like Spark to use timeline service v.2 as soon as feasible. :) Seriously,
I think it would be easier for them to emit aggregated metrics themselves?
Otherwise, they would need to identify a suitable entity of their own and use
this aggregation ops. Either should be possible.

Varun Saxena commented on YARN-5174:

[~sjlee0], you had earlier said :
"I am not sure if we need to highlight the aggregation operation bit. "

The aggregation operation part is currently there in the document.
So what we need to decide upon is can some metrics at the level of task or
something semantically similar be posted by application directly without
aggregating them upto the level of application ? Or we assume they will
aggregate it by themselves (in which case this part can be removed). If we go
with latter, this can probably be explicitly stated.
Say, in case of Spark on YARN, multiple spark executors will be launched (with
each one executing multiple tasks). This will not be an immediate use case
though, if ever.

Joep Rottinghuis commented on YARN-5174:

Documentation looks good to me.
One thing we can do in the next release (not needed for this jira imho) is have
a summary for arguments to the various rest methods so that each argument is
defined once. Only if an argument with the same name works differently for a
particular API call can we then document the differences. That will save
overall length of our doc and decrease the repeated text.

Joep Rottinghuis commented on YARN-5174:

The property
"yarn.timeline-service.hbase.app-final-value-retention-milliseconds" has been
renamed to
"yarn.timeline-service.hbase.coprocessor.app-final-value-retention-milliseconds"
as per YARN-5189, that still needs to be modified in this jira.

 ]

Joep Rottinghuis commented on YARN-5174:

[~varun_saxena] an image like that does help to explain the hierarchy, and I
think it would be good to include in the documentation.
For the initial verison, do we want to show a flow with different shaped runs?
This is where the concept of flow version comes into play. For automated tuning
tools such as reducer estimation one can compare only two flowruns of the same
"version", meaning that the jobs have the same shape.
I think it might be good for the initial introduction that two flowruns have
the same number of apps and each app the same number of containers.
Similarly, in your flowrun 1, application 2, your attempts 1 and 2 have a
different number of containers. While this is possible through speculative
execution, failed task attempts etc. that is probably not the simplest shape we
can use to introduce the hierarchy.

We could also consider giving the flow and flow run boxes (the vertical
columnar ones) a slightly different color. This would be to indicate two
things:
* Flows and Flow Runs are two new concepts introduced by ATS, and once there
they will hopefully permeate through the rest of Yarn.
* Aggregation up to applications is up to the AM, from then on, ATS v2 will
take care of the aggregation for users.

The documentation can describe that we'll use labels (which go into job configs
if I'm not mistaken) to have users stitch an arbitrary number of applications
into a single flow. This could span MR, Tez, Oozie, Spark, etc. I don't know if
that label / config value work is in yet.

bq. So you're envisioning a separate document aimed at framework writers?
Actually Let's try our best to unify our documentations? We can add more
content and create a more detailed documentation for our object models in the
original doc?

Oh OK. So you're envisioning a separate document aimed at framework writers?
Where would that document be added? Would it be still somewhere under
{{hadoop-yarn-site}}?

Thanks [~sjlee0]! At very beginning I was planning to write something for
downstream projects to use ATS v2. That's why I included much contents from
YARN-3150. The main update is mostly on the object model section, and if
possible we can treat that as a starting point to have more details documented?

Thanks [~gtCarrera9] for the great content!

Just so I understand, your proposal is to restructure and expand the existing
{{TimelineServiceV2.html}} to include this content, right? There seems to be a
fair amount of overlap with this doc and the existing doc, and I wanted to make
sure we're on the same page.

The content looks good to me for the most part. If I have to nitpick one,
bq. Each metric item contains metric name (id), value, and what kind of
aggregation operation should be performed in this metric (noop by default).
I am not sure if we need to highlight the aggregation operation bit. First of
all, this is only about the *application* aggregation. Also, user code should
normally post the application-level metrics directly onto the application
entity (e.g. MR AM writing job metrics on the application entity). Should we
simply drop the mention of the aggregation op part?

We need to explicitly mention the hbase version we are going to use. Depending
on the version, there are several API call changes in the code.

As discussed on the ATS call
- let's all pitch in and complete this
- we can comment into the jira about the points mentioned above
- As per [~Naganarasimha Garla]'s suggestion, we can add a diagram for
hierarchy etc
- Li has some info about the entity model

Slightly broadening the scope of this ticket to include the following items:
- change the left nav
- RM container event publishing should be disabled by default
- default reader/writer implementation
- timeline client registering address
- some documentation on the entity model
