Few comments:
 # I would prefer to take FPGADiscoveryStrategy and related impls out of the 
FPGA common class to have better modularity.
 # In {{SettingsBasedFPGADiscoveryStrategy}}, is it possible to receive 
multiple devices into availableDevices? Looks like its comma separated. Not 
sure whether its to be parsed and kept in each Strategy class ctor itself
 # As discussed, let's try to do some checks for the script such as exec 
permission etc.
 # If it's possible, please add few comments to give sample values of 
deviceSpec. So its easier for reference later.

I made a slight modification in {{FpgaDiscoverer.discover()}}, replaced the 
existing iterator-based logic with some nice streams/lambda logic.

Fixed chekstyle + findbugs issues.

Regarding Findbugs, I removed the {{synchronized}} modifier from all methods. 
They're called either from {{ResourcePluginManager.initialize()}} or 
{{ResourceHandlerChain.bootstrap()}}, both occur during initialization on a 
single thread.

In {{FpgaDiscoverer.java}} at the part that decides upon the way to discover 
the devices, the code could be made a bit more readable with for eg. 
{{DisoveryStrategy}}

Something like:

I started to work on this.

I decided to handle the script output the same way as we do with the property. 
So the same format is expected from the script.

[~snemeth] yes that is a possibility. A property value has to be compact, so 
it's pretty much necessary to squeeze data into a single line. The script might 
use a different output format, like:

It's also worth to mention here for reference that what type of output you plan 
the script will produce based on the output of "aocl diagnose". Is this going 
to be the same fpga device specification string as the value of property

Today we had a meeting with [~snemeth], [~shuzirra], [~zsiegl], [~adam.antal].

Right now it's difficult to reliably parse "aocl diagnose" because it's 
intended for humans to read. Also, figuring out the device file can be a 
challenge too. Our proposal is:
 * for backward compatibility reasons, let's keep the existing parsing logic
 * introduce a script-based solution: we define an external script in a 
property ({{yarn.nodemanager.resource-plugins.fpga.device-discovery-script}}) 
which provides info about the available FPGA cards in the system. This is 
already a working approach in Hadoop: determining network topology and disk 
checker (if provided) are also invoked as external programs. Obviously the 
script  should print its output in a strict format.
 * if users don't want to mess around with the script, they can provide the 
available devices as a property (like 
{{yarn.nodemanager.resource-plugins.fpga.available-devices}}) value as defined 
above: {{acl0/243:0,acl1/243:1}}. Actually the external script might return 
this in the same format.

Priority if multiple methods are enabled:
* List of devices defined by the user
* Script execution
* Default parsing method

Regarding your first comment: 
As you said, extending the parsing logic (1) would be problematic as it 
couldn't get generic enough to handle all the FPGA cards so I won't go down 
this road.
Combining 2. and 3. seems the best for me given the Pros/Cons you listed. 
If you can figure out what type of card was handled by the original 
implementation (probably [~tangzhankun] help you with that) you could keep that 
code to parse that specific card then you could introduce a new pluggable 
parser implementation for Intel PAC. 
It is also very important to provide a way to users for manually specifying the 
cards (as per point 3.) like GPU-support v1 provides an option for that.

Option 4. seems to be the most fragile between the alternatives you enlisted, 
so I would drop this option.

Thanks [~tangzhankun], the new device framework looks promising.

But still, we have to problems with this:
1) When this will be released? Any ETA? We have to deliver FPGA support to our 
customers and most likely we won't have enough time to wait for it.
2) Somehow the cards still need to be autodetected.

As an interim solution I suggest the pluggable parser or the manual setup which 
can be set by a YARN property. Later on we can make it deprecated.

[~pbacsko] , Thanks for following up the FPGA features. I think we could have a 
device plugin developed for this new model FPGA card in the new pluggable 
device framework(YARN-8851). That eliminates the burden of generalizing all 
model of FPGA detections. We can define a new resource like 
"intel.com/fgpa-pac" and provide a dedicated device plugin for it.

And as an example, YARN-9060 has the new Nvidia GPU plugin developed based on 
YARN-8851.

We _really_ a good solution to this. There are several approach I can think of:

1. Extend/fix existing parsing logic:
 * Pros: everything is at a single place
 * Cons: parsing is already convoluted

2. Pluggable parser implementation:
 * Pros: logic can be separated for different cards, allow users to plug-in 
their own implementation
 * Cons: we might not be able to use two different FPGA devices in a single node

3. Users can override FPGA devices with properties. Basically we only need 
three things: acl numbers and major/minor device numbers. So a property like 
{{yarn.nodemanager.resource-plugins.fpga.available-devices = 
acl0/243:0,acl1/244:0}}
 * Pros: we don't rely on a semi-structured output
 * Cons: manual steps are necessary for successful configuration. Users have to 
know what they're doing.

4. Try to detemine devices from {{/sys/class/fpga}}
 * Pros: can be more reliable than using aocl + reading stuff under {{/dev}}
 * Cons: what if there are more entries? Eg. for PAC, we have 
{{/sys/class/fpga/intel-fpga-dev.0/intel-fpga-fme.0}} and 
{{/sys/class/fpga/intel-fpga-dev.0/intel-fpga-port.0}}.

5. Something else that I'm not aware of :)
