Spot on. The View menu for things you want to see, the Edit menu for
things you want to add/delete.

means that you can add/delete a folder? Normally, a checkmark is used
for an option, such as "Bold" on or off and not for a folder "here or
not here". Typically, such commands are under the
"New/Open/Close/Delete" divisions, are they not?

You know, a simple DELETE/REMOVE in the cog wheel would had been more
obvious. After all, you'll see "New Collection" there, why not
"Remove Collection"?

The checkmarks on or off for the Smart Collections mean 'Show' or
'Hide', as I see it, not 'New' or 'Delete'. To me the checkmarks are
perfectly appropriate, they denote the options of showing or hiding
the Smart Collections.

I agree with Jan here: nothing is being "added" or "deleted".
Instead, the visibility of a feature is being turned on or off. The
View menu and, perhaps to a lesser degree, the cog wheel menu, are
natural locations for this sort of control. It's a paradigm that's
well-established among other applications by Apple and third parties.

Exactly -- so why did I not realize it? Why should I take my time to
post to this list if what I wanted had been obvious?

I could expound more on this subject, but that's the way it is.

you didn't realize what I was saying.

Select which ones you want to show using the "cog wheel" at the
bottom of the list.

I used to design Mac software, but that just wasn't obvious enough
for me. I kept thinking that sort of things should be in the
preferences.
