RE: [Zappa-List] Message delays - was VO: 1967 1969 - FLAC SHN formats

2005-12-15 Thread Nick Ullmann
Hi, Sofa,

No, it's no big thing, but I certainly didn't want to shut someone out.
Where the technical fault lies I don't know, but the message board advice is
probably on second thoughts the best, except it seems to make getting
individual e-mails redundant and I personally dislike having to go from
place to another.
But no, keep it as it is, noone else is complaining, so there is no reason
to change it - it was merely a suggestion of mine.
If I had a moan, it'ld be with the length of time vines take to get from one
member to another - which hopefully doesn't occur that often. I try to get
vines out the next day if possible. Disasters and private lives do happen so
delays are understandable too!
Anyway thanks for your interest, Sofa, and,

Kind Regards, nick

Greetings Nick,
I would be not pleased if messages took 2 days to reach my inbox too. Yes,
the technology is failing you...
I'm curious regarding a couple of things: how many others have this same
trouble (not the occasional message out of order, but the repeated and
unacceptable delays with individual emails - a 2-day lag is outrageous), and
what have they done (if anything) to rectify the issue with Yahoo, or their
server - as, it seems to me, that's where the trouble lies? I'm the first to
say Yahoo sucks, so don't think I'm defending then; I've not experienced the
trouble you're having.
The lineage method we employ was set up in response to numerous complaints
about the Old Way to which you wish to return. I care not how it's done;
I'm rarely involved in them anyway, and don't mind waiting when I am. My
concern is how many are effected; more than those who had an issue with the
old way?
Remember Kids, it's your group - not mine. I merely attempt to keep as many
members happy as I can...
Regards,
SOFA

   Hi, John, Hi all!

I have just received this message - almost two days after it was sent: I
think the system of lineages although good in principle fails us here. In
my
view we should go back to what the other groups are doing - offer up each
time rather than depending on a lineage.
No, I don't want to go the message board all the time - where there are
unexplained delays as well anyway. (What's the point of individual
e-mails
   to memberw then anyway)
Sorry the technology fails us here and has already caused unnecessary
   arguments, Sofa,

my two euro cents and, as always,

Hi, Sofa,**Hey Nick!
No, it's no big thing [x] Where the technical fault lies I don't
know, but the message board advice is probably best, [x] I personally dislike
having to go from place to another.
**I am with you there, my friend. I upgraded my modem recently (I
use sbc-yahoo, unfortunately), and have had to do flips and twists to keep up
with all of my groups - yahoo wouldn't let me combine all of my info into one
account, so I have to toggle between 2 and it's a huge pain in the
ass...
But no, keep it as it is, noone else is complaining, so there is no
reason to change it - it was merely a suggestion of mine.
**And one worthy of consideration, IMO. SteveM, another member I
respect, liked the old way better too; so you're not alone. "The Powers" around
here - such as they are - are looking into this matter; maybe we'll be able to
fine tune something from this...
If I had a moan, it'ld be with the length of time vines take to get
from one member to another [x]
**Another legitimate concern - one that can't be legislated. We
have to trust all to be conscientious, for what it's worth.

Anyway thanks for your interest, Sofa,
Kind Regards, nick**My pleasure to serve you all, Nick! Never
hesitate to express a concern about the List; we do are best, but we all can
learn...

Re: [Zappa-List] Sleep Dirt vocals and such

2005-12-15 Thread Joseph Lonon
Hi SOFA, I hear you,

I know folks can be touchy about what was the best. I read about differences
in YAWYI versions, but love the CD, *the material*, and that's usually the case
with other albums with various mixes/overdubs. Perhaps unfortunately, I first
heard the overdubbed WOIIFTM and Reuben, and loved them both. After hearing
the original tracks for Money, I loved them too, but in a different way ... the
way I hear the songs when I'm at work is probably the Art/Chad version. Maybe
it's simply what you identify with first, bond with first, that you carry
closest.

As far as Sleep Dirt goes, I heard the versions with vocals first, but longed
to hear them without them, and liked that feature on Lather. But then I always
hear ZINY (my first) in censored album order. Isn't that amazing?

love it all,
Joseph

-- Original Message --

Joseph,
You're treading a delicate area here...
I bought Sleep Dirt when it came out, and enjoyed it very much. Years later, I
heard the cuts with vocals, and enjoyed it very much. I've never been critical
enough to go after all the different versions, because (with the checking I've
done) I end up liking them very much...
Ya see?
The only way to answer your question properly is for you to collect, and
listen to, all the versions out there and then decide which one that you like
best - and you'll probably like most, if not all, of them. Countless net hours
are logged discussing things that are merely a matter of personal taste (not
that I'm against that; I'm sure someone else will chime in with a different
opinion).

SOFA

On a whim, I ran through Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, and Sleep Dirt today. After
hearing the Thana Harris vocals, I pulled out Lather and was right, no vocals
there. I looked at the 'vinyl vs. CD' page and then got thorouoghly
confused. I never had the Sleep Dirt LP, so I can't really compare it, but
are the differences that large? I never noticed drum overdubs there, too,
but it looks like he did it more than I thought. Anyone have any perspective
on that album, in general or specific? I always liked it, and am happy to
have those certain tracks with and without vocals.

  thanks,
  Joseph

Hi, Sofa,
**Hey Nick!

No, it's no big thing [x] Where the technical fault lies I don't know, but
the message board advice is probably best, [x] I personally dislike having
to go from place to another.
**I am with you there, my friend. I upgraded my modem recently (I use
sbc-yahoo, unfortunately), and have had to do flips and twists to keep up
with all of my groups - yahoo wouldn't let me combine all of my info into
one account, so I have to toggle between 2 and it's a huge pain in the
ass...

But no, keep it as it is, noone else is complaining, so there is no reason
to change it - it was merely a suggestion of mine.
**And one worthy of consideration, IMO. SteveM, another member I respect,
liked the old way better too; so you're not alone. The Powers around here
- such as they are - are looking into this matter; maybe we'll be able to
fine tune something from this...

If I had a moan, it'ld be with the length of time vines take to get from one
member to another [x]
**Another legitimate concern - one that can't be legislated. We have to
trust all to be conscientious, for what it's worth.

Anyway thanks for your interest, Sofa,
Kind Regards, nick
**My pleasure to serve you all, Nick! Never hesitate to express a concern
about the List; we do are best, but we all can learn...
Regards,
SOFA
