Re: [Zappa-List] Off Topic Question to Audiophiles

2005-03-13 Thread Jim L

Ironically 20 years ago the only
place I could buy a decent phono pre amp under $100 was radio shack. Now all
they have is a turntable with a built in pre amp (unheard of 20 years ago). The
one in the top left corner here looks like the exact same item they used to sell
however.

Had it in a week. The seller I used also sends links to a handful of places
to get the necessary software to burn LPs to CD or to put on your hard

2005-03-13 Thread SOFA

The "clueless" response by the Radio Shack personnel is simply they don't
know their own product line. Realistic - a RS brand - has been making pre-amps
for years. They still do, I believe. The problem is in your stylis; it's
probably ceramic. You just need something that changes the signal, like a
pre-amp. Or one of the ones mentioned in the other posts...
Yeah ebay will work too. But those jobs are still out there...

I had a similar problem, I didn't want to keep lugging my amplifier
upstairs to copy vinyl to computer.
I bought one of these:

Thats a UK site, but it looks like its available in the US as well.

Plug it in and then grab hold of the furniture! :o)

While I was reading about your problem, first thing I thought was "Ok, you need a preamp" but I guess you already know that. When I went shopping for a new turntable, both the Best Buy and Circuit City in my area had small preamps. Just little boxes with RCA in and out that you plug the turntable into if you have AUX inputs and not phono inputs.

Of course, what I did was get an Audio-Technica turntable that has an on/off switchable internal preamp.
