[zones-discuss] Experiences POST patch 121431-44 (live upgrade with zones and "/var" in a separate dataset)

Hi, my friends. Happy new year.

After installing patch 121431-44, I can do a live upgrade on a machine
with separate "/var" and zones without errors. The new BE is created,
you can boot it correctly but...

1. You can not go back to the old BE, since trying to mount it fails
(because the mounting creates a "/var" directory in the old BE. Why?.
Who knows...) Check this:

("d" is an alias equivalent to "ls -la")

 [r...@stargate-host /]# lumount Solaris10u7
ERROR: cannot mount '/var': directory is not empty
ERROR: cannot mount mount point device

ERROR: failed to mount file system on

ERROR: unmounting partially mounted boot environment file systems
ERROR: No such file or directory: error unmounting
ERROR: cannot mount boot environment by name

[r...@stargate-host /]# zfs mount datos/ROOT/Solaris10u7

[r...@stargate-host /]# d /.alt.Solaris10u7/var/
total 13
drwx-- 2 root root 2 Jan 3 17:28 .
drwxr-xr-x 36 root root 49 Jan 3 17:28 ..

[r...@stargate-host /]# rmdir /.alt.Solaris10u7/var/

[r...@stargate-host /]# d /.alt.Solaris10u7/var/
ls: cannot access /.alt.Solaris10u7/var/: No such file or directory

[r...@stargate-host /]# zfs umount datos/ROOT/Solaris10u7

[r...@stargate-host /]# lumount Solaris10u7
ERROR: cannot mount '/var': directory is not empty
ERROR: cannot mount mount point device

ERROR: failed to mount file system on

ERROR: unmounting partially mounted boot environment file systems
ERROR: No such file or directory: error unmounting
ERROR: cannot mount boot environment by name

[r...@stargate-host /]# d /.alt.Solaris10u7/var/
ls: cannot access /.alt.Solaris10u7/var/: No such file or directory

[r...@stargate-host /]# zfs mount datos/ROOT/Solaris10u7

[r...@stargate-host /]# d /.alt.Solaris10u7/var/
total 13
drwx-- 2 root root 2 Jan 3 17:57 .
drwxr-xr-x 36 root root 49 Jan 3 17:57 ..

As you can see. I delete the "/var" directory, since my "/var" is a
separate dataset. When mounting the directory, "lumount" recreates
"unnecessarily" an erroneous "/var" directory in the BE. This makes the
subsequent mounting of the "var" dataset to fail. Since "lumount"
creates the directory each time, you can not do anything about it. The
only option I find is to edit "/etc/lu/" and "/etc/lutab" directly,
promome the ZFS "datasets", etc, by hand.

Ugly and error prone.

So, 121431-44 is incomplete.

2. The newly created BE boots... but the Zones don't. Investigating the
issue, I found this:

a) The zones "grow" a suffix. That is "stargate" zonepath is changed
from "/datos/zones/stargate" to "/datos/zones/stargate-Solaris10u8" (the
name of the new BE). Where is that documented?. I need to know about
this kind of things, to update my backup scripts, etc.

b) My zones are hosted under "/datos/zones". This path is actually a
"dataset", and it is not automatically mounted in the new BE, so the
zones under it are not mounted either. If I mount the zonepaths
manually, I can boot the zones.

If the zones datasets MUST be mounted under the root dataset, that MUST
be documented clearly and, better even, unsupported configurations
should be rejected at "zonecfg" time.

Please, let me know if you need more information. This machine is on
production, though, so better be kind to it :-).

I can not believe that Solaris10/ZFS/Zones is so inmature. I want this
situation to improve, so let me know what info/checks you need.

All my machines (ZFS root) have separate "/var" datasets. I have
upgraded all of them to Solaris 10 U8 last week without any issue...
except the machines with Solaris Zones (same problem documented 3 weeks
ago or so).

I don't have a maintenance contact with Sun, but I would like to know
about progress resolving this. I was wondering if I could be in the "loop".

My zones machines are waiting this to be solved... :-(. No system
upgrade (to Solaris 10 U8), even holding back regular patching because I
can not create new BE's :-(.

Any progress?. I have stopped patching my systems because I can not
create new BE's :-(.

I created a new zone and tested this... You must map it to the zone, or
you can not see any dataset inside the zone.

Re: [zones-discuss] Strange error with ZFS Live Upgrade and Zones

2009-09-25 Thread Jesus Cea
have a trip next monday. I will be unavailable until tuesday or wednesday.

PS: I have an "strange" configuration in my datasets, nevertheless. I
don't know if it is related or not. It is a configuration detail I could
change:

My ZFS pool is called "datos". Every zone, under "/datos/zones/ZONE",
has a child dataset called "/datos/zones/ZONE/dataset" (and multiple
datasets under it). In every zone, the dataset
"/datos/zones/ZONE/dataset" is set a "mountpoint" of "/datos".

For instance, in the zone "stargate", I have this:

[r...@stargate mail]# zfs list
NAME USED
 AVAIL REFER MOUNTPOINT
datos 71.1G
  606G50K /datos
datos/zones 24.5G
  476G24K /datos/zones
datos/zones/stargate 12.4G
  476G 640M /datos/zones/stargate
datos/zones/stargate/dataset 11.8G
  476G 30.5K /datos
[...]

The "datos" dataset (pool) has a mountpoint of "/datos", but is not
mounted, so the "/datos" mountpoint of "datos/zones/stargate/dataset"
should not be a problem.

I don't know if this is relevant or not, but is the only personal
configuration I could think being "risky".

Another point... I map "/datos/zones/ZONE/dataset" into the ZONE using "
 " (zonecfg), but I am
thinking this is not necessary because the dataset is already a child of
the ZONE "root". So...

Do I actually need to map the dataset into the zone, if the dataset is
already a child of the ZONE root dataset?.

So... What can I do?. Do you want me to check/test anything?.

If that is the problem, what about children datasets of the zones?. I
don't care (too much) about putting zones under the current BE dataset,
but I rather prefer putting children datasets outside of "ROOT" dataset,
if that is possible.

[zones-discuss] Strange error with ZFS Live Upgrade and Zones

2009-09-22 Thread Jesus Cea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I am trying to do a live upgrade of a Solaris 10 U7 with zones, and I am
finding some errors. Any suggestion is welcomed.

I do a "lucreate" correctly. But when I try to do a "luactivate", I find
this:

"""
[r...@stargate-host /]# luactivate Solaris10u7-20090922_2
System has findroot enabled GRUB
Generating boot-sign, partition and slice information for PBE
ERROR: unable to mount zones:
zoneadm: zone 'stargate': zone root
/datos/zones/stargate-Solaris10u7-20090922_2/root is reachable through
/datos/zones/stargate/root/.alt.tmp.b-ox.mnt
zoneadm: zone 'stargate': call to zoneadmd failed
ERROR: unable to mount zone in
ERROR: unmounting partially mounted boot environment file systems
ERROR: cannot mount boot environment by icf file
ERROR: Unable to mount the boot environment .
"""

I see some of the filesystems mounted, so I try to unmount them:

"""
[r...@stargate-host /]# luumount Solaris10u7-20090922_2
ERROR: No such file or directory: error unmounting

ERROR: umount: /.alt.tmp.b-T5.mnt/var/run busy
ERROR: cannot unmount
ERROR: failed to unmount
ERROR: cannot fully unmount boot environment - <1>: file systems remain
mounted
"""

Reading the Solaris 10 documentation I can not see any relevant detail,
except that I created my zones under "datos/zones" (a ZFS dataset)
instead of a child of "datos/ROOT/Solaris10u7", as showed in every
example. I don't know if this is relevant or not. In any case, the zones
datasets are snapshotted&cloned correctly.

If that is the problem, I think I can do a "rename" of the dataset to
move it to the right place, and edit the config files "by hand" to
reflect the new location (/etc/zones). But first I need to know if this
is actually the issue. I think that having the zones under
"datos/zones", being an absolute path independent of the BE (Boot
Environment), could be the problem. Could you confirm it?.

This is a production machine, so I would like to solve this without
disturbing it too much (I can mess a bit with it if necessary).

Thanks for any help.

PS: If the zones datasets must be children of the current BE dataset,
that SHOULD be documented clearly in the manual!.

[zones-discuss] Live Upgrade and Zones

2006-08-09 Thread Jesus Cea
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

This could be a "faq" but I haven't found any answer yet.

Is there any plan to support live upgrade on machines with Solaris
zones?. If affirmative, any timetable?.

I love Solaris 10 new features, but the only one I can use currently at
100% is dtrace. ZFS is fairly new (Sol10 6/06) and it doesn't support
ZFS booting yet, and Zones are incompatible with live upgrade, that is a
required procedure in muy site...

Thanks in advance.
