[Zope-CMF] Topics are not catalogued...

2006-10-24 Thread Dmitry S. Makovey

Is there a specific reason topics were never catalogued? Turns out
this is the behavior they inherit from PortalFolder . Now from what I
see Plone-2.5 does index Topics and folders. My question is - how
much am I going to break if I monkey-patch PortalFolder to be
index-able? Meaning that Topics are going to be indexed and since I'm
using Plone-2.0.5 Folders are indexed as well.

The CMF is not tied to one person. No one has "responsibility for
all eternity" to fix it, even for no-longer-maintained versions.

Someone has to take decisions every now and then.

Yes, and they do, and it works pretty well for maintained branches -
but again, we're talking old and unmaintained software combination here.

I am ready to remove irrelevant combinations, but in this case I
have been reluctant up to now because of the possible security
implications.

CMF 1.4 is unmaintained. This has been known for a long time.
Plone, as the largest "customer", prescribes specific Zope and CMF
versions, which obviously have been tested ad infinitum. I don't
see the value for continuing to automatically test combinations
that are not used.

Agreed, deprecate it and maybe consider introducing a process for
deprecation (as well as an easy way to check the version... wink)
