If there was a simple scriptable way to grab whatever you need on
there e.g. from SVN I could add a script.

I don't think that this can happen automatically. I could take over
the responsiblity for doing this but this requires access
to download.zope.org. Otherwise I have to nag you :)

I'll provide access and will email you off-list.

Tres,

That's not exactly fair.

Someone must have made a conscious change for this to happen.
It would take and order or two of magnitude less time for that person to
pipe up and say what they did rather than anyone, me included, having to
trawl through a million layers of publisher code just to find out what
they did.

The same goes for WebDAV breaking when you use any kind of Zope 3 views,
although I'm guessing that's less of an issue as I suspect the WebDAV
sourceport is used by very few people nowadays.

standard_error_message, on the other hand, is used pretty heavily,
afaik, so I'm surprised more people don't care about it...

No, it hits the nail on the head.

True for large files, but a traceback is not that large _imo_. Depends on
your connection of course.

Also, we are on a development list, so if somewhere, then here tracebacks
are on topic.

 Solution: use a pastebin.

I disagree: pastebin is good for linking from irc, but when I come back
to the archive I would like to see the details even when the pastebin
entry is gone.

Re: [Zope-dev] Zope 2.12.0a4 easy_installable - please test

2009-04-24 Thread Behrang Dadsetan
On my Mac OS X 10.5.4 with a 2.5.4 python (not default one) things work nicely.

Only one comment:
during the 10 minutes installation procedure, it is nice it shows
the progress of installing eggs but some of the warnings will probably
be quite frightening to a Zope2 newcomer.

We have a similar problem with grok (as I guess we share lots of eggs
and these warnings come from installing these eggs) btw, logged as a
enhancement feature on Launchpad.

Yes but it does not get uglier does it? :) Output to the console
whether as part of the installer or running the app should still
ideally be something people should read (and then ignore if they feel
it does not affect them).

In this case, I feel it just gives a bad first impression of the
software. Thankfully it comes early so if the new user runs the
command and goes and gets the coffee it will quickly disappear :)

In particular, what could improve the first-time experience for the

Yes I know I am commenting without action on this one. But you asked
for comments! ;)

I actually intend to provide patches to the grok related packages to
remove as many of these warnings as possible. But frankly even that is
not on my schedule for today or tomorrow. I am afraid I will not have
time to look into that Zope2 one.

True for large files, but a traceback is not that large
_imo_. Depends on your connection of course.

Also, we are on a development list, so if somewhere, then
 here tracebacks are on topic.

  Solution: use a pastebin.

I disagree: pastebin is good for linking from irc, but when I
come back to the archive I would like to see the details even

You should expect trunk failures on Windows. Most people who
contribute to buildout don't run tests on Windows. Windows tests
should always be run and made to pass before making a release. I do.

I get the 50 failures with Python 2.4. (BTW, it would help if you
reported the Python version used.)
Most or all of these are spurious and due to actual output lines
having carriage returns at the ends. (I assume this is a side-effect
of a recent change to using subprocess.) It should be easy to address
this by adding a renormalizer. I'll get to this at some point, if
someone doesn't beat me to it.

You're not out of order for speaking up. Not at all. However, you're
the only person with a deep Zope knowledge who expects that other
people do the debugging for him.

The whole assumption that a specific committer somehow remembers that
a specific code change he or she made breaks whatever you find to be
broken is faulty. It's very easy to work on one end of Zope and
inadvertently break something at the other end that may not be covered
well enough by tests. You cannot just expect that someone will speak
up and say oh yeah, I broke standard_error_message. But you can
provide some serious help by doing debugging and pinpointing the
issue. The chance that someone will remember what they did and why
once you describe the underlying cause will be a lot larger. And they
will most likely fix it for you then.

(Please forgive the crosspost, and follow up to me directly with
questions, rather than CC'ing the lists).

In order to complete the transition of copyrights from Zope Corporation
to the Zope Foundation, we need to refresh all committer agreements, and
therefore need to be able to reach all committers via a valid e-mail
address.

If you have ever made a checkin to the the Zope CVS or subversion
repositories, please verify that your profile information on
www.zope.org is up to date (the e-mail address, in particular).

The Zope Foundation board will be sending out a request for the new
forms within the next month: committers who do not make a timely reply
to that request will have their checkin access suspended until they
complete the form.

If you know a committer who is unlikely to receive this e-mail via one
of the cross-posted lists, please forward this e-mail to them

Thank you for your cooperation, and for your continued support of Zope!

Cool!

Would you mind adding the versions.cfg from the Subversion tag to
http://download.zope.org/Zope2/index/2.12.0a4/versions.cfg ?

Makes for a bit more sensible URL compared to
http://svn.zope.org/*checkout*/Zope/tags/2.12.0a4/versions.cfg

Thanks,

You are asserting that somebody made a conscious choice to break
'standard_error_message': it is far more likely that the breakage is an
unintended consequence of some other change. Putting your effort into
diagnosing the cause will do more to fix the problem than arguing about it.

does not look like zdaemon 2.0.4, which is listed in the index at

 Hi Andreas,

I just created a new Zope 2.12.0a4 that should easy_install nicely.
 Howto?
 virtualenv foo
 cd foo
 source bin/activate

 Please give feedback.

 On python2.5/gentoo/ppc I got this:

2009-04-24 Thread Peter Koppatz

Hi Andreas,

I tried it with virtualenv --no-site-packages foo and it works.

Excuse the false alarm.

Peter

I just created a new Zope 2.12.0a4 that should easy_install nicely.
 Howto?
 virtualenv foo
 cd foo
 source bin/activate
 bin/easy_install -i http://download.zope.org/Zope2/index/2.12.0a4
 Zope2
 Please give feedback.

 On python2.5/gentoo/ppc I got this:

 Cool!

Would you mind adding the versions.cfg from the Subversion tag to
 http://download.zope.org/Zope2/index/2.12.0a4/versions.cfg ?

Makes for a bit more sensible URL compared to
 http://svn.zope.org/*checkout*/Zope/tags/2.12.0a4/versions.cfg

This works just as well:
http://svn.zope.org/repos/main/Zope/tags/2.12.0a4/versions.cfg

Wichert.

[Zope-dev] zc.buildout template recipes: concerns with [z3c|collective].recipe.template and other issues

2009-04-24 Thread Gary Poster
I'm concerned about the state of the zc.buildout template recipes. I
want one. I want some one-off files, specific to a certain project,
for which writing a standalone recipe feels very heavy.

Here are the template recipes I found:

collective.recipe.template (Wichert Akkerman)
iw.recipe.template (Ingeniweb)
inquant.recipe.textfile (Stefan Eletzhofer)
z3c.recipe.template (Uli Fouquet)
buildout_script (Nathan Yergler)
z3c.recipe.filetemplate (Philipp von Weitershausen)

First, on the basis of this list, it strikes me that a lot of people
want this functionality. Putting template support into zc.buildout
itself would be nice. I envision some APIs (like the ones in
easy_install.py that zc.recipe.egg uses) that other recipes could use
easily. I would even want recipes like the zc.recipe.egg script
recipe to allow specifying initialization code by identifying a
template (i.e., ``initialization_template = buildout_templates/foo``,
which would parse the given template and insert the code the same way
the ``initialization`` parameter works).

Second, there's no clear winner at the moment. I happened to find
z3c.recipe.template, buildout_script, and z3c.recipe.filetemplate
first. On the basis of those three, and the comments that
z3c.recipe.template made about collective.recipe.template,
iw.recipe.template, and inquant.recipe.textfile, I decided to settle
on z3c.recipe.template to be the package to which I would contribute.
It has tests, a variable substitution approach that seems to work well
with buildout, and recent development activity.

However, on starting to hack on its documentation to sketch the
changes I wanted, I gradually realized that this was a fork of
collective.recipe.template. Since collective.recipe.template is
listed as BSD in setup.py (though I saw no explicit licensing
otherwise), placing z3c.recipe.template in the zope.org ZPL-only
repository is problematic.

Since I don't find the prospect of creating yet another template
recipe attractive, and Philipp's z3c.recipe.filetemplate looks like it
can take my new features while maintaining backwards compatibility,
I'll try that next, I suppose.

But meanwhile, I'm concerned about the state of z3c.recipe.template.
IMO, Uli and Wichert should try to reconcile the licensing and forking
issues (with Uli taking the lead in those discussions, ideally, since
he is the one who forked). z3c.recipe.template should be removed from
the zope.org repository, unless/until the licensing story is cleaned up.

And maybe we can start to settle on a common template approach soon.
This should be a problem that is solved for buildout canonically,
IMO. I'll be happy to try and see if my features are generally
interesting, once I make them.

(Note: I could write about this on the distutils list but I'm not
already subscribed there, and I suspect I have a better chance of
catching some authors of the pertinent recipes over here, and some of
this is about the zope.org repo.)
