I think it's an extremely useful feature ;-)

Indeed. Well, unless anyone objects, I'd like to commit the patch I
proposed...

Hi Lennart,

Just to be clear, is zope.testing 4.0.0 intended to work with Python 2?

I'll try to get around to trying 3.10.0 with Launchpad rsn.

[Zope-dev] Developer meeting 2010-07-27 at 15:00 UTC

2010-07-27 Thread Christian Theune
Hi again,

late, but here it is:

We have an IRC meeting coming up in about 30 minutes.

I'd like to see whether someone was at EuroPython and can report whether
anything interesting for us, the Zope developers, happened.

I'd also like to try again doing some languishing bug review together.
Just to make sure: I want us to take 10-15 minutes to review new bugs
and either reject them or accept them as valid bugs signalling the
reporters that we have seen them (and will deal with them eventually).

[Zope-dev] ZTK automatic discovery with buildbots

2010-07-27 Thread Christophe Combelles
I've worked on a special buildbot that would be able to create a new ZTK list
automatically, by testing arbitrary new versions. For this purpose I've created
z3c.checkversions, and the last version 0.4 has two new options (--blacklist
and
--incremental). http://pypi.python.org/pypi/z3c.checkversions/0.4

I'm using this package in the special following buildbot:
http://buildbot.afpy.org:8018/waterfall

Previously, the buildbot was testing the set of *all the latest* releases, but
I
was never able to get success. So I've changed its behaviour and now it's
testing new packages one by one, and reduces the version number until tests
pass :

1) The first builder on the left uses z3c.checkversions to create a new list
with *only one* new version, and reject any version found in a blacklist.
2) The 3 builders in the middle do the actual tests against this list. If some
build fails, the package is added in the blacklist.
3) if tests pass, the version list is kept for the following builds.

The buildbot has started living by itself, and has given the following
behaviour :

- it started with ZTK 1.0a2
- it upgraded (arbitrary) zope.dublincore 3.6.0 -> 3.6.3
- tests failed
- it added zope.dublincore 3.6.3 in the blacklist
- it upgraded zope.dublincore 3.6.0 -> 3.6.2
- tests failed
- it added zope.dublincore 3.6.2 in the blacklist
- it upgraded zope.dublincore 3.6.0 -> 3.6.1
- tests failed
- it added zope.dublincore 3.6.1 in the blacklist
- so it keeps zope.dublincore 3.6.0 (until 3.6.4 is released)
- it upgraded lxml 2.2.6 -> 2.2.7
- tests passed
- lxml 2.2.7 is kept for future builds (mmh, ok it wasn't, but it should be :( )
The next run will try another package, and we should be able to get the best
working ZTK automatically. I still need to do this for all platforms...

This is not optimal, because zope.dublincore 3.6.3 maybe works well when
upgraded with another package, but I'm not sure how to detect this.

Any idea or suggestion welcome.

Christophe

I've fixed it, now it does keep lxml=2.2.7, and it just chose
zope.testing=3.9.5.

The chosen package is visible in the stdio of the 1st builder :

(...)
z3c.recipe.compattest=0.12.2
zope.testing=3.9.5 # was: 3.9.4
zope.authentication=3.7.1
(...)

I was there but I couldn't join in today's meeting as I was still
airborne. My BFG presentation seemed to go down pretty well and Zope/Plone
seemed to be pretty well represented, better than the current framework du
jour, Django. It was great to see Zopish stuff (ZCA and ZODB) presented
outside the web world and Matt Hamilton did a sterling job promoting the
Plone conference in Bristol in October.

I did my best to plug the upcoming Python (and Zope) conference in Dresden
in September but was a bit hampered at having to do this *without* any
visual support, although my Macbook had no trouble with the main projector
(seemed to crash lots of machines - my guess is that the VGA signal wasn't
properly damped), as I was able to announce it between lightning talks.
Only two slots for lightning talks but I really the one after lunch much
better than sticking them at the end of day.

Europython was as enjoyable as ever - I find the range of talks broader
than at PyCon - but as badly organised as ever. PyCon definitely has the
edge on that. John Pinner, et al didn't a fantastic job as ever but the
European and particularly British culture of "it'll be alright on the
night" was shown badly wanting and I suspect the catering was as poor as
last year - I went straight to the sandwich shop which had a shorter
queue. I say this as a Brit and someone who didn't volunteer for anything.
My Luddite heart was gladdened by the problems with the Wifi which meant
attendees were indeed occasionally attentive but I totally sympathise with
John Pinner who said that the wifi has continually declined since they
installed it three years ago and it did negatively affect one or two
presentations. Europython next year is due to be in Florence. I prefer the
May date but as far as I know no venue has yet been found. Will be great
especially for WAGS (leave the credit cards at home) if they get it
sorted! 2012 is still open but I'd put money on it being in Germany with
plans for a full Python conference in Germany in 2011 already being made.

On the positive side the beer at the Wellington was as good as last year
and it was great to see Guido van Rossum and Steve Holden encouraging
others to go for a post-conference pint! :-D

Highlights for me: Bruce Lawson's keynote and presentation in "earthy,
vernacular" Brum; Hannu Krosing's thoughts on different ways of getting
Python and Postgres to work together; and the Codility talk on testing
programmers which, predictably, drew interest from several German
developers keen on ways of weeding out those who just can't program very
well, with reasonable online tests. But with four to five tracks and a
schedule to 18:30 each day there is plenty I missed.

FWIW we've done a brewery tour as part of BeGeistert which was very
enjoyable and popular and I think there's a natural fit between Python
programmers and craftsmen.

It's not that easy to fix zope.index. It's should take more than a few weeks.

Thanks for the report! Is there a list of talks online where we can get
the links to the Zope-related ones, maybe even slides, from?

2010-07-27 Thread Christian Theune
Hi,

for the summary:

No EP participant was around, but (as you can see) we're asking for
quick updates from participants via the mailing list.

The experiment for reviewing languishing bugs turned into a more general
discussionabout responsiveness, process, expectations and others. No
decisions were made but we can probably use some of it as an input for
the summit. See the IRC log if you're interested in the full 20 minutes.
