[Zope-dev] [Zope Crash Solution] Positive Report

2002-03-28 Thread Stefano Noferi

Hi Zopers!

Thanks all for your time, especially to Matthew and Leonardo.
My patched Python/Zope systems run well now in multi-threads mode.
I tested with very hard Python Scripts too and my report is at all positive.

My relief is great, like many others zopers, I think ; )

Thanks again and Happy Easter!

Stefano

[Zope-dev] Zope crash problem

2002-03-14 Thread Stefano Noferi

Hi
My experiences with zope 2.5.1b1 and python 2.1.2 crashes are now only with
CMF 1.1 installed.
The new system with plugin indexes implemented in zope 2.4.x (with text
fields plugin splitters compiled in c as python modules for optimization) is
a diff with stable zope 2.3.3 platform.. Can splitter modules (or eventually
other python module .so of zope core) crash zope 2.5.1b1 ?
How can I test this?

Thanks
Stefano

[Zope-dev] Re: Zope vs. Cocoon

2002-02-26 Thread Stefano Mazzocchi
 that way?

No, I will look more seriously into the technical details, although I
would probably be more interested from Zope3 than from Zope2. I'll post
my impressions after getting my hands dirty with more Python (which I
like, but since I couldn't write Avalon in Python, it would not be
interested in learning more of it... also, there is no very little WORA
concept in Python, which scares me to death!)

Anyway, I'll see how Zope solves the design and architectural issues we
are currently designing (expecially how it deals with flows and resource
mapping).

But my point is: comparing Cocoon and Zope is an serious architectural
 mistake.

I agree they were created to solve different problems. However, there
are many reasons why developers may
want to compare the two technologies:

 - both are leading open-source platforms for building websites

it's cool that people start to think this way.

 - other major open source alternatives may no longer be as attractive
(recent demise of arsdigita, enhydra's problems, ...)

yes

 - XSLT is becoming more mainstream (why Zopers might want to consider
 Cocoon)

:)

 - Inclusion of Lucene + Xindice with Cocoon narrows the gap

And I'm sure you'll see the gap narrowing a lot in the future... and
hopefully provide serious alternatives.

In general, based on my assessment of the architectural directions of
both projects, they are likely to
provide more and more similar functionality as time goes on.

Oh, I'm sure about that.

When it comes right down to it, I believe the slash-dotters were correct
when they said that the main
issue may be choice of programming language. If you have a development
 shop full of Java programmers,
are you really going to expect them to learn Python and Zope?
(Of course, that is precisely what ArielPartners did :-)

If this was so, it would be sad.

I would love to see people switching to Cocoon because they found it
better to work with and more intellectually rewarding than other
solutions.

Using the marketing power of Java and XML to bring more people to the
Cocoon front is not what I want: I want people to understand the design
choices behind cocoon and use them only if they appreciate them, not
because their boss forced them to use it.

But anyway, thanks for the good talk.

Re: [Zope-dev] Re: Zope vs. Cocoon

2002-02-26 Thread Stefano Mazzocchi
that there is *way* too much magick in Zope. That is the
main motivator behind Zope3, which is entirely component-driven.
Architecturally, it is *excellent*, and I'm very excited about it. I
could wax on for hours, but I won't right now. Suffice to say everyone
in the community has learned a lot from Zope2, and we're eager to build
on that experience. See the link Craeg mentioned for more detail.

It's great to know this.

I really with you guys best luck with the new refactoring: from past
experience, I can tell you that is a long and painful process and might
create lots of forking frictions inside the community, but if done right
(and from what I read, you guys are on the right track), it could give
you *lots* of rewarding, both intellectually and from the community.

This is what Cocoon did on the transition between 1.x and 2.x and I
still have to hear a single individual that didn't like the evolution.

I'm pretty sure this will happen for Zope as well.

Take care.

Zope restart with a DTML Method version of this script too.
It's a very serious problem because Zope restart with a segmentation fault.
I've tested this bug in Zope 2.4.1, 2.4.2, 2.4.3, 2.5.x... the same
result. ; (
I've posted this bug in Zope Collector ( http://collector.zope.org/Zope/76 )
but I've got no reply..

I suppose it's a problem of Restricted Python machinery that PythonScript
and DTML share.

Compiling python with --without-pymalloc option Zope autorestart itself
with a minor frequency.. but it restart.. ; ((

IMPORTANT: I tested it with a NEW Zope instance with simply only one
PythonScript in the root folder with the content I specified.. It restart!!

Solutions?

R: [Zope-dev] Playing with DateTime

2001-03-17 Thread Stefano

Hello

well, my idea was, as I said, to create a pubblic interface called DateTime,
and then wrap mxDateTime or other forms behind it. This will make it fully
compatible with the existing DC implementation. Then if soembody like me
needs a more flexible implementation, as in my case a class that accepts and
returns things in the central european format, then he/she can decide
whatever or not use this implementation.

Best regards
Stefano

Oggetto: RE: [Zope-dev] Playing with DateTime

IMHO, the best approach would be to make mxDateTime available separately
from DateTime in the _ variable. That would avoid breaking any code, but
allow anyone who wanted to use mxDateTime that option from within Zope.

I think a product that adds mxDateTime to the _ variable would be your
  best bet.

Well, my opinion, too. On the long run this might get the preferred way of
dealing with time stuff so that the use of DateTime gets depreceated. But
I guess DC needs to decide this.. I also dunno if there are any problems
with mxDateTime being used (e.g. security concerns, whatever) as
 I havent't
 looked to closely at this.

Note the "DC needs to decide..." only applies to what we
decide to integrate (and thus sign up to maintain, at some
level) into the core. One of the key goals of our long-term
strategy of becoming much more component-oriented is that
the "marketplace" (aka the community) decides what the best
component is for a given task.

And we do not have to wait for the full component story to
land for this to happen; as noted, I'm sure someone could
come up with a product that "componentizes" mxDateTime in
some way so that people who prefer it can use it easily.

Time and de facto usage would then tell whether we (DC) should
consider some sort of transition - and we can learn whether
that would be a good idea without inconveniencing those who
prefer to continue using the built-in DateTime in the meantime.

[Zope-dev] (Newbie Alert)- How to change multiple properties from aselection list

2001-03-08 Thread stefano . ciccarelli

Hi,
I am trying to assign more than one property from a form selection list.

I have a ZClass "Course Description" that holds ..a course description
(title, learning objectives, agenda, prerequisites, link to docs, etc.)
and another ZClass "Course session" that holds the course time and
space related data(start date, end date, summary, location, etc.)

Trainers create courses and course managers (CM) decide when and where
to have these courses.

Once the CM wants to set up a session, he adds a Course session,
selects the course title from a selection list and decides when and
where to have this course.

The selection list is generated by a catalog search. What I would like
to do, is the following:

Since the title is not unique, what the CM really chooses is the Course
id.
Based on the selected id I would like to :

copy the title property of the Course Description to the title property
of Course Session.

update the "link to Agenda" property of the Course Session with the
path to the selected Course Description.

I know how to do this singularly, but not all at hte same time.

Any Idea?

Here follows some code I am using for the selection list

thTitle of event/th
 tdselect name="id1:int"
  dtml-in "Catalog(meta_type='Course Description')"
  OPTION value='dtml-var data_record_id_'dtml-var
title/OPTION
  /dtml-in
  /select /td

Thank you very much,

Stefano

Since I am a Zope newbie I did not find a way to make it work.

I would really appreciate your help,
