FREE MP3s from this week's Heckadecimal party: http://www.jobot.org/nomad/ 5/16 - Emotional Joystick, Shiny McShine, MrBlaq und more EMOTIONAL JOYSTICK -- Interested in putting a new "I" (Improvised) into the unfortunate term "IDM", Emotional Joystick has worked on bringing an improvised edge to the performance of experimental electronic dance music for years. His earlier incorporation of Fender Rhodes playing during live performances has extended to include large sections of completely free improvised sound. Blending his technical abilities as a musician with homemade electronics and computer programs of his own design, his live show will definitely be a welcome change for those fed up with the typical staleness of laptop performances. As an artist, EmotionalJoystick has had a string of successful releases on Zod records, as well as appearances on labels such as Component, Addict, M-Tronic, Grounded, Eupholus and more. His newest album, "Plays" changes focus slightly from his earlier recordings, and puts more emphasis on his skills as a keyboard player. Still using the abrasive drums and complex rhythms, his newer work has more of a live feel to it, with fluid jazz and dub inspired structures. SHINY McSHINE -- Mr. McShine does not have an official biography, nor does he require one. Suffice it to say this guy makes the darkest, grittiest scatter-beat souffle to hit the upper Midwest since Dan Doormouse left Wisconsin for sunnier climates. His "Dead at Esther's" release on Grindthieves is one of the recent highlights of Minnesota's grindcore underbelly. Rumor has it that Tom is planning something special this evening. It seems the scatterbeats will be tamed slightly, and skewed into more of an acid-electro type context. Sounds sexy -- don't miss out! MrBLAQ -- Do I really need to introduce this guy? He programs the computers that make www.vitalvinyl.com and www.mnvibe.com go 'round. He's got one of the best damn record collections around. He's Aphex's twin. He drinks Tripel Karmalite. He eats sea slug when I tell him to. I think he poops in technicolor, but that rumor has not yet been confirmed. 5/23 - Ian Lehman and Nancy Cheng going away bash I can't say too much about this yet, as I'm letting Ian and Nancy handle the lineup and details for this evening. Suffice it to say that Minneapolis is losing two huge creative talents -- not to mention incredibly awesome folks. Also suffice it to say that I have a large amount of faith in their musical tastes, so I'm absolutely certain this night will be awesome. ECTOMORPH, SOLVENT, JOBOT and NAUGHTYWOOD - $6.00******************************************************** ECTOMORPH -- Ectomorph returns out of the void with new visceral voodoo from another dimension. Long time leaders in the Electro sound, Ectomorph dissolve boundries and inihibtions. They have come to destroy your power centers. Ectomorph first appeared via Interdimensional Transmissions (IT) with their debut release in 1995. They have materialized in many forms since then, documenting their progressions as a stream of influential 12"es, culminating with their "Sleazy Listening" LP due halloween 2003. Documents include their recent "Dada" ep on IT, submissions on Ghostly's "Disco Nouveau" and Rephlex's "Murora Project," and remixes of Detroit gems such as "Shari Vari" (Gigolo) and His Name is Alive (4AD). The group has developed a new approach to sound by delivering unique in-the-moment live performances, often with additional avant theater. The frequency of these performances has created a fluid communication of structure and improvisation, based around the core nucleus of BMG & Erika. After years of performing live together, the sound of Ectomorph's recorded work finally matches the fluidity of their live performances. Such performances have taken them around the world, from the Sonar Festival to the Love Parade, from the Knitting Factory to the Empty Bottle. SOLVENT -- Solvent is Jason Amm, a robot music composer and analog synthesizer fetishist. Born in Zimbabwe in 1972, Solvent currently resides in a room full of machines in Toronto, Canada. Solvent has been releasing his unique brand of synthesizer-pop music since 1997, and is best known for his releases on Morr Music (2001's Solvent City) and Ghostly International (2004's Apples & Synthesizers, 2005's Elevators & Oscillators). He is also co-founder of the obscure, yet influencial electro(nica) label, Suction Records. Solvent has created his own unique version of electro-pop: too elegant and sincere for the electroclash set, too complex and contemporary to sound like it was recorded in 1981, and too seeped in the time-honoured traditions of melody, songwriting and hands-on synthesis to be lost in the overcrowded world of IDM. Solvent is widely regarded in the underground electronica community as being at the forefront of electro-pop's return to form. UK magazine The Wire has described Solvent as part of a new generation of composers "gleefully blurring the lines" between modern techno and vintage techno-pop. Solvent currently records exclusively for Ghostly International, and has been touring extensively since 2004, having shared the stage with Adult., Legowelt, Bola, Junior Boys, Matthew Dear, Arovane, Lowfish, and others. Solvent's release schedule for 2006 includes the debut full-length release by a new side project called Black Turtleneck, a couple of split releases with Lowfish, as well as a new Solvent 12" and (fingers crossed) full-length. Also watch out for extensive Solvent live dates throughout North America and Europe later in the year.
